In the movie, I saw Demi’s character have hope when she decided to go out on a date. Then, when she started vigorously taking off her make-up, I saw how quickly her self-hate took over. That scene made me cry because my hope for her was dashed also. Great actress. Thank you for this video.
Doesn't advance the plot!?!? It IS the plot. Elisabeth and Sue are one. It shows how much contempt Elisabeth has for herself for aging and why Sue does what she does because Sue is her.
The scene was not like Barbie's, it was plot moving actually, it was the moment in which the character sank deep into her self-imposed prison, just like Demi explained to Amy.
Most men will not get this, because they NEVER have to worry about looking perfect....and before you start to dispute me on this, let me give you a quintessential example. Steve Buscemi ...now, let me preface this by saying, I have NOTHING against the man - he is a TREMENDOUS actor. However, I think it is safe to say that, by Hollywood standards, he is not the most attractive man in the world. But that has NEVER stopped him from getting roles....I'm pretty sure no one ever told him to get his teeth capped, etc. The speech given by America Ferrera in the Barbie movie sums it up perfectly for women....again, NONE of which ever applies to men....
You are right. However, Buscemi has stated on numerous occasions that people have recommended/suggested "fixing/capping" his teeth. He also stated that he has been mostly pigeon-holed into playing characters who are usually described as "funny-looking/ weird-looking" throughout his filmography. However, as you pointed out, women aren't allowed to skew or subvert the beauty status-quo. They don't get the "grace" of being pigeon-holed like Buscemi; they are usually shut out.
comparing Mubi to the Warner Bros... really?.. Mubi started as streaming service for the auteur films & filmmakers that's why Mubi is all okay with that whatever the filmmakers wants in thier films still they will release it not like Warner Bros that a main and huge company that having a own standards of filmmaking--Warner Bros. has the controls all the films they want to release or not

I was JUST thinking about that scene. I related so, so intensely. That quick transition from optimism to desolation...beautifully done.

Demi Moore is a good actress.
In the Substance she proves it once again.
The makeup removal scene was gold. Superb acting.
I’m just laughing because you thought it doesn’t move the plot and it makes me wonder about how your mind does or doesn’t work 😂😂😂😂
This women is so beautiful! Got to give credit when it’s do.
Gosh , but Demi was so good, and so legendary . Like wow , what a movie !
It reminded me of I-Tonya!
It totally does! Tbh I first read your comment as 'I-Toyota'.

That scene IS THE PLOT, shut up.
Love it. Aging is fucking weird
That’s a part of reality live some women that violent but true can be hard for some people but we live in world or be pretty is look an obligation
This movie was pointless. All they did was objectify everyone even more. So much talent wasted . Just my opinion.
