  • Mixing with automation is a really important part of the mixing process. As a song progresses, its needs change in different parts, and therefore the balance needs to adapt. It’s rare that a static mix could apply to all phases of a song. This is where automation comes in, whether it is for volume, panning, or effects!

Mike, you're an amazing teacher. I've been watching your series and I can't thank you enough. I'm feeling confident enough to record a first song. I'm sure there's so much to learn, but your teaching will certainly help me find my own way from here. THANK YOU!

Very good info. I’ve been running live sound for 40+ years and still I learned some tips from what you were doing. I came for the automation but the technique got me. 👍

Hi Mike, another good session. After doing a write say on a fader I tend to go back to the automation lane and smooth out some of the movements. I find I’m often a bit jerky on the fader (or whatever) so smoothing by reducing the number of points gets things smooth. Sometimes I use the write to get an idea and actually replace it in the automation lane. Thanks again. Tony

05 Preparation before automation. Have a break from the song to refresh your ears. A day's break or even longer is good.
44 Go back to the chorus first. Readdress the balance after having added things since doing the static mix.
18 Then listen to the whole song and take notes on things that really stick out. Then listen again noting some less major things.
24, 3:39 Mike has 6 things to automate. Guitar too quiet at the beginning. Not a lot to alter.
13 Clips > Automation > Volume. Disable Automation Read - "R".
59 Play the song while adjusting the fader to find the right level. A tip, shut your eyes while listening and adjusting the fader - it can be good to avoid the visual stimulus.
01 Another node. Shift-select two nodes (one right at the start) and adjust the level. Read Enable the track again.
24 You can also use parallel compression to control the balance, and have the guitar ducking during the singing.
47 The cajon fill is a little too loud. Using the cajon bus to deal with both the cajon tracks at once. 'Show/Hide Bus Pane' button to show busses under the tracks.
35 None > Automation > Bus Output Volume. A little volume adjustment.
51 Making the organ stick out more in a verse. 10:25 Clips > Automation > Volume. Using a total of 4 nodes. 11:46 He'd usually prefer to use speakers over headphones for adjusting volumes, judging balance.
02 Lone female vocal, make it have less and less reverb towards its end for desired effect. No automation nodes this time, another way to automate is dragging things and recording the movements.
55 Female vocal is Sent to a bus with the reverb plugin. Usually he would adjust the Send level going to the reverb bus, but this time the vocal is the only part being affected so he can use the fader on the reverb bus.
51 Write Enable the slider - "W". Drag the fader as you listen.
17 Main vocal. Bring it down to expose the choir a little more. You can rehearse the movement of the fader that you want.
08 Write Enable the channel and drag the fader as you listen.
44 Creating space for instruments at the end of the song. In Pro-Q 3, analysing the guitar and piano. Scoop out part of the guitar to make space for the piano to come through. Only want to do this in the last two choruses because the guitar is used by itself in most of the song.
08 Not all plugins can be automated but a lot can. Sent all guitars to one bus where the FX has been inserted. 19:42 None > Automation - there's loads you can automate in Pro-Q 3. Making the EQ on for only one part of the song.
12 Write Enable the plugin. Demo of dragging the node around while the song is playing. You can do complex automations - changing the sound of an instrument for just one section of the song.
29 Would normally automate the vocals much more, e.g. to save them from getting buried underneath instruments, but the way they are here is satisfactory. Don't feel like you HAVE to do compression, automation, etc.
28 Let other people listen to the song at this stage too to get their opinion, and listen to the song on different systems - speakers, ear buds. There will be more automation in the mastering stage. Make sure you're reasonably happy with the mix before the mastering stage.
37 Outro
