The first version of Schubert's "Die Schöne Müllerin" I heard was Fritz Wunderlich's first recording on a Nonesuch LP with Karl Ulrich Schnabel (Artur Schnabel's son) as his accompanist. I haven't heard it in decades, but I recall it as an amazing recording that seems to have dropped down the memory hole even while his remake with Giesen remains more or less available. It was my introduction to Wunderlich's marvelous voice as well.

My first Die Schone Mullerin, Richard crooks on 78 rpm - How old am I? A few years ago had a nice chat with Leon Fleisher after his concert in which he played the Schubert B flat sonata and the Brahms transcription of Bach's Chacone for piano left hand. Both were wonderful. I saw Fleisher as a very young man and I was an even younger man in my early teens. He said he remembered the concert. So nice to see him twice about 60 years apart! Also saw one of my favorite Schubert Pianists when I was a young kid, Paul Badura Skoda. Got to see and hear him live after 65 or so years. Gilels Schubert D major sonata was one of my first LP purchases of Schubert sonatas. It remains my favorite for the Opus 53 as it was then called. Good video will have to check out Zacharias.

I'm so glad you mentioned Imogen Cooper. She is another under-rated Schubertian. Her sonatas on Ottavo are delightful.

Hi Dave, now that you mention Leppard, could you do a vid on him and also on Karl Münchinger as part of the series starters of the period instrument movement? I really liked the one you made on Marriner. Thanks

IMO, the Grand Duo falls into the category of "Works Too Big for Their Medium". Others include Pictures at an Exhibition, Brahms F minor Quintet, and perhaps Debussy's La cathedrale engloutie.

hello mr hruwitz...I wanted to share with you, if I may, a short text by the late Claude Gingras, Canadian music critic, which I extract from the encyclopedia of music in Canada (p 403) (ed fides) ( 1983) ....text which is also addressed to those who criticize you....'' - the role of the critic is essentially one of intermediary, between the one who gives and the one who receives. he must first of all love passionately the field in which he works, have complete knowledge of his subject, absolutely sound taste, perfectly sound judgment, and at the same time, he must have total objectivity, be completely independent of friendships and enmities. In short, he must possess estimative qualities which are necessarily lacking in others, on both sides of the ramp....''

That sounds impossible (and ridiculously pompous) to me! We can but try.

David, did Schubert orchestrate the Grand Duo, or was it just orchestrated by others?
