I Watched Every AFI Music Video From the 90s...

- ...and it was a highly enjoyable experience. AFI were quite prolific in the 90s. They managed to change their style a little bit each time they released an album. Through Very Proud of ya, to Shut your mouth and open your eyes all the way to the horror punk magnum opus, the melodic All Hallows EP they tweaked their image and sound just enough to bring in new fans all the while being being so much of a departure to alienate older, die hard fans. Davey Havok has reinvented himself more than Madonna, Taylor Swift and Chris Jericho combined.

Davey Havok was a hardcore hunk one day then a soccer mom picking you up from practice the next.
You gay
@danframpt0n You should check out the German band Die Ärzte, they are the total definition of versatility in the german punk scene
Davey will always have a huge place in his heart for punk but he’s just opened it up for other outlets
🤣😂 hardcore is dying dan ,when warzone stopped, agnostic front continues, even madball still trying,as for others, money bitches drugs booze and thats it ,NOT TO MENTION TOBY FROM H2O GOING ON A JUSTIN BIEBER CONCERT WITH HIS SON ,so i started to doubt his speech on hardcore mentality or even the menaing of a straight edge... and the yas-youre a scumbag of hardcore evan seinfelid went from biohazard into darkness fing kids in the porn industry and still pretending to be real ,the scene that raybeez roger miret and lou koller invented in the early 90s ,became and is becoming a sellout show
@nouseforafap nah! Hes just a annoying soyboy but hes right about Havok this time
I was there for this and it's really only AFI and Alkaline Trio that told their audience "Hey! We're vampires now" and their audience was like "bet."
Dave Vanian also.
I would say more glampires in AFI's case...😅
Ink & Dagger would disagree.
Missed opportunity to say "bat" instead
Being honest but idk y it bugs me when people mention alkaline trio with afi, afi was on a whole different level. Way more extreme and dark at times but also more successful. I just really don't understand the connection.
i feel like AFI just gets in different moods and writes an entire album and releases it for fun
It’s more of a progression than moods. They don’t really go back. I think they just be themselves and what you hear/see is a representation of who they are in the given moment.
I saw them play New Orleans three times in '98-'99. The first time I saw them I went to the bathroom and Davey Havok was looking in the bathroom mirror making weird faces and posing. It was hilarious.
I'll just say. I went to an AFI show years ago, and to this day it was the most violent crowd I've ever been in. I love a wild pit. But it was the only time i felt unsafe
I saw them at this tiny pub years ago...I felt really bad as they played a short set and at the end I said "Is that it?" over a dead silence. The drummer heard me and might have taken it the wrong way as what they did play was amazing. I watched them a few months later with all their Misfitsesque grandeur and they were brilliant
Dan is always entertaining and I appreciate that.
this kid from the z generation is kicking their ass,i like him very much
Frampton comes alive
I was blown away to see AFI dressed preppier than the kids i went to highschool with when i saw them in 2018
Wearing my All Hallows E.P. shirt right now! 🎃🐈⬛🎃
Edit- And yes, Total Immortal is just pure audio aggression. So good.
The way he could melodically scream for an entire concert was so impressive
A vocal powerhouse undoubtedly
Thanks for sharing. 🖤 AFI .old school AFI was 🔥🔥🔥. They Have evolved so many times. Davey had throat surgery. I believe this is a reason why the music has changed. And the way he sings has changed.🤔 He doesn't scream because he's trying to preserve his voice.
Man Ill miss the old AFI till I die. I cannot stand them now. AFI used to be such a great punk band.
Davey Havok’s voice from All Hallows to Sing The Sorrow was godly.
its the jump they did to sing the sorrow and the many changes after that... yeah crazy band, good live as well
Saw them open for Good Riddance in 98. Became an instant fan and still a fan all these years later. They still bring it live but for sure, seeing them in late 90s up until they canceled remaining dates of STS tour was unparalleled. Some of the best shows of my memory.
Edit: i dare you to watch all the videos from the Bodies album. Even as an AFI stan, i can tell you itll be a rough watch. Its a terrible album.
Idk, I actually really enjoyed Bodies
Fuckin' good riddance is still amazing live! Saw them a few months ago with swingin' utters and they were fantastic 😅.
@joshuarezek253 cool! I haven't seen them in so long! Glad they're still out there!
Femme Danzig era of AFI is untouchable
Davey is the best ever. I listened to them so much, my little sister named her cat after him.
Davey Danzig, Glenn Havok… same difference!
the first vid - Very Proud of Ya I believe is a homage/reference to the movie Goodfellas (scene where they're driving shinebox gangster in the trunk of their car after beating the crud out of him in Tommy's bar).
It def is. Given how the vid plays out.
it was goodfellas and reservoir dogs.
Third Season is one of my favorite songs from them. I was so bummed that the earliest song they played when I saw them in September was Days of the Phoenix. I wanted all that old school goodness.
Damn that sucks felt like Davey was looking right at me singing that song in Oakland last year. Hell of setlist
My favorite band of all time
I used to spend high school computer classes finding these videos pre UA-cam. Sing the sorrow wasn't even out yet! Fuck am I old?!
Also Shut Up And Look is a pretty underrated album these days
He’s not “all of those things”, all of those things try to be him…
"shut your mouth..." is no skips
Lit and AFI should never be mentioned in the same sentence
I watched Davey walk up and down Telegraph in Berkeley back I the early 90ʻs self promoting A.F.I. because he believed in himself and his band. Heʻs a fukinʻ legend in my book because he followed his dreams and his passion. I witnessed this on multiple occasions and of course weʻd see them at Gilman.
imo AFI really started coming together during shut your mouth and solidified next album with jade.....with that being said he who laughs is by far and away my fav track before then
i like early afi, especially 'shut your mouth and open your eyes' and 'all hallows' ep, but i also enjoy some of their later stuff
I don't have time for you today Frampton BUT THIS IS NOT OTHER
OVER*
My very first show ever was AFI opening for Good Riddance and Lagwagon at Berkeley Square in 1995. They had so much energy! So cool to see them go on to becoming one of the biggest bands…
I like that sweater Dan Frampton
They were the 90s equivalent to Ratt in the 80s. Regardless if you liked em, you were going to AFI to get laid. Fuck yeah!
Skate punk AFI is best AFI.
There are two Daves that hold the keys to my heart and for the same reason, Bowie and Havok. Never stop growing and changing! 🖤
They took "He who laughs last" from resevoir dogs
The “He Who Laughs Last” video was a Goodfellas spoof.
Ray Liotta literally opens looking out the window saying “As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”
The Lit comparison is funnier.
@@danframpt0n I get it.
I always think of the hot topic era AFI. Lmao at the Lit video. I knew a dude that switched up his look and personality every time there’s was a new subculture. There was pictures of him as a skin, a goth, Kurt cobain, teddy boy, and even an elvis era 😂 last I saw him was like ten years ago so he was a Mumford son cosplayer or ol timey barber
So many guys that used punk as a phase ended up turning into those beard/mustache barbershop quartet IPA dudes, lol
We all know a guy like that
Davey is the legend. He would have had the whole security team retreating if he were on that We Came As Romans show recently where they were roughing up the audience
Looks like they were heavily inspired by Tarantino in the beginning...
They formed their band in HS a year before Tarantino’s first movie came out (Reservoir Dogs) and they themed their first album (Answer That) on it!
Still love them. It was a good time to be in the east bay at their best.
Their library is unmatched. Now the World 336 (my current favorite song ever), 6 to 8, Third Season, Morning Star, Advances in Modern Technology, Midnight Sun, Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 37, Who Knew?, Synesthesia, A Story at Three, Endlessly She Said, Dream of Waking, A Winter’s Tale, Halloween, The Great Disappointment, Catch a Hot One, …but home is nowhere, The Despair Factor, A Single Second, Okay I feel better now, This Secret Ninja, Carcinogen Crush, Kiss and Control, Totalimmortal, 100 Words, Of Greetings and Goodbyes, Jack the Ripper, Death of Seasons, Malleus Maleficarum, Fallen Like the Sky, The Nephilim, Affliction, and Sacrifice Theory. There’s other amazing bands but they don’t have this amount of legendary songs.
Can’t forget Reiver’s Music
They weren't incredibly popular during Very Proud of Ya because the scene had moved to post-punk and beatdown. At least that's what the band says, I was six when the album released.
Also, the music video for He Who Laughs Last is a spoof on the movie Goodfellas.
Everyone was punk in the 90's. In California, in particular, there was a sense of rebellion and nonconformity that permeated the culture, which aligned with the punk ethos.
This rebellious spirit could be seen not just in the music, but also in the fashion, art, and general attitude of the time. Even Grunge was heavily influenced by punk and shared many of its anti-establishment values. Same with hip-hop and rap scenes in LA were known for their raw lyricism and their critique of societal issues, which also echoed the punk ethos.
So, while not everyone in the 1990s was a self-proclaimed punk, the influence of punk could be seen and felt in many aspects of the culture, particularly here in California. Sorry just nostalgic thoughts.
The Prayer Position, Narrative of Soul Against Soul, Perfect Fit
It was a pleather gimp shirt, he's vegan lol
Lol
Only pumpkins were harmed in the making of that video.
Gotta love the references to Goodfellas in the first video!
The first video from Very Proud of Ya is a parody of the movie Goodfellas.
Funny you bring up Dexter most of their 90's stuff was released on his record label Nitro Records.
Damn Blank TV. I remember watching videos on that site 25 years ago 😢
His screams are amazing
Oh, actually The Boy Who Destroyed the World might be my favorite. I love All Hallows EP so much
It's an amazing EP
I saw them open for rancid in 95, fucking crazy!
Also saw em play the elks club in moose jaw Saskatchewan (98ish)
That was insane!
Era, not ear-ah! Driving me nuts here. 😂
It's literally both
It’s not, but you can pretend it is 👍🏻
e·ra
You missed the whole 4 years before very proud of ya, same "era" of misoc so i get why you did it, but theres alot nore to afi going all the way back to 93

🤣🤣🤣🤣 1:06
I thought they were weak chick music. So many better death metal and hardcore music was being slept on back then.
This could be the douchiest thing I ever read. It hits all the bases
Very Proud, and Answer That were both pretty good. Everything else... not so much. Them turning out to be what they are now makes me not even enjoy that stuff as much. Turns out they were posers the whole time who didnt mean what they were playing.
Id take any era of afi over the little braided mullet era😂
