Marsha stated that she'd come out to her mother years before, who said she'd known it was so all her life, but also asked Marsha not to come out publicly while she was alive.
My friend met Marsha at a lesbian bar back in the 90s. She and her date were the sweetest of people to her and everyone else.

The reason you are seeing so much of it now is that it was never allowed to be seen for decades. It was always there, but people had to hide it. Now they are getting the same representation of their lives we straights have enjoyed for the entirety of the modern entertainment industry's history. I don’t believe people just blithely change sexual orientation simply because ”it’s the in-thing to do.” Everyone I know who is gay says they felt that way from a young age.
