Thank you ETA and LaunchBox. You guys have brought back so many memories
Lovely intro!
Thank you so much for the updated video.
i have been trying to run retroarch for the last few weeks!! When i open it it automatically becomes unresponsive if you can help with this you will not only be helping me but a ton of people are actually having this problem and its not hardware related! THANKS!!
Thanks for the information was just what I needed to get started ....now for some fine tuning. 😀
This is best explain for play arcade games i see ever thank u man
Thank you for this video, Great step by step instructions !
Just wanted to say you have the best videos. I've learned alot. Keep up the good work.
This is totally confusing. So is this an emulator or a front end? If it's a frontend than why is it installed inside another front end (Launchbox)? If you install emulators inside the folder for launchbox why would you use Retroarch and install cores (emulators?) for its folder?!?
exactly, its not worth the bother
yeah i dont get it, i already have launchbox setup with all my emulators... why on earth would i add an unnecessary middle man
@@LucasJodokast RetroAchievements, that's why... If you are not into something that tracks your progress, then it is really worthless.
The installer is still portable. It is also how you just update Retroarch without going through all of this again.
games wont run, the whole app blinks when i click on a game and thats it
Alan L Same thing. I’ve tried all tutorials and forums but it won’t launch through retroarch
tompparaideri same here any luck? I can right click and open retro arch through the games I’ve just wasted time loading
make sure you have the correct core. when I was first setting this up, I had the wrong version of the DS core, and had to redo everything. the name of the core has to e exactly like in the list of supported platforms
@@NoahWhy thanks man you help me a lot, dowload all the ds cores for full work
You have the exact same voice as ETA Prime.
That *is* ETA Prime...
@@hagros93 we dont know that, btw the FBI wants to know your location
@@jamescox5638 I'm in outer space
Wish LaunchBox just had the option to auto download and install emulators within the interface.
Unfortunately, that is probably some sort of legal quagmire that they don't want to get into.
It isn't hard to add them but I understand the ease of use you are wanting.
All your videos are knowledgeable keep up the good work
Hey ETA, can you make a video explaining how to set up the controls for different systems and how to save them so every time you load a game for that system it's already saved. I hope you understand what I mean.
In Settings > Configuration enable Load Content-Specific Core Options, Load Override Files Automatically and Load Remap Files Automatically if they aren't on already and then when you have a core and game loaded make changes that you want for that core (or game) and save the Core Override or Game Override if you just want those settings to apply to that specific game. You can also turn off Save Configuration on Exit to prevent any accidental settings over writes, just make sure you save your core / game overrides when you do make a change you want.
Load up a game using the Mame core (any game at all) then press Tab, this will bring up the Mame menu. You will see the top 2 options Input (General) and Input (Machine). Set your universal control scheme in the General section and per game in the Machine one.
Hello there! Hoping I could ask you some questions; I'm a little new to emulation here...
1.) I'm wondering RetroArch is required to use LaunchBox? I already have most of the emulators I want and I've tested them for compatibility with all of my ROMs & stability with my systems to ensure everything works, and it does. So I really don't want to deal with any possible RetroArch emulator/software hiccups if I don't need to. I just want the slick GUI experience of LaunchBox.
2.) Right now I'm using Snes9x, Kega Fusion, Mesen and I'll probably add Mameui64 for mame titles when I have some free time. So is it possible to add these emulators to Launchbox without the use of RetroArch?
3.) Also, I use the Rom Collection Browser Kodi add-on in conjunction with the above emulators and it works great, BUT I really like the GUI of LaunchBox, so is there a convenient way to use Launchbox with Kodi and my current emulators?
Hope to hear back, thanks!
1. Nope, not at all required. You can use any emulator you want as long as it supports command line loading of roms which is so from my experience almost everything.
2. Yup, all of those work fine though with MameUI you will most likely have to copy the mame.ini file out from the \ini folder to the main install folder where your the Mame executable is. There is something weird with Mame and this requirement.
3. Not exactly sure what you are asking precisely but there is a Kodi plugin for Launchbox so you can startup Launchbox from within Kodi.
Feel free to head over to the forums and ask questions you may have over there, you will be sure to get answers.
Ok, I'll make sure to check the forums out. Do posts require admin approval before they go live? That kinda thing--which specific websites/forums employ--drives me nuts.
2.) Is there a specific version of MAME that works best with LaunchBox? I was planning on installing the latest version of Mameui64, but there are a number of different MAME variants/versions.
3.) Basically, I was wondering if you could startup LaunchBox within Kodi. And you've said yes, so that's great. I'll ask for more details on the forum.
Well explained video as usual. What's the best way to setup a key combo to then save and exit retroarch and drop back to launch box/bigbox. Thanks again
Just a note to anyone watching the Snes9x Next core that is pre configured in Launchbox is no longer available. Download the plain old Snes9x core and change the command line parameter to use that core. That is the recommended core for most users now though if you have a powerful CPU the BSnes and Higan cores are very good.
What did you rename it to? I can't seem to get it to work!
You replace the core name with the one you downloaded in the \cores folder of Retroarch. So in the case of using the Snes9x core, you download it using the updater like it is shown in the video and then you edit the command line parameter for the SNES platform and replace the .dll. Mine looks like this:
-L "cores\snes9x_libretro.dll"
Just be careful of typos. Remember to always double check the actual core file name in the \cores folder, that is where they are downloaded to and located.
Lord Monkus Savage! Lol I was creating a brand new one and unchecking the box to the SNES! I replaced the name to the one that was already there and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the help!
No problems, also another tip don't use the preset NES core. Mesen just got a libretro core and is essentially 100% accurate which is much more than Fceumm and Nestopia.
Lord Monkus hey would u be interested in helping me setup my launchbox as far as the right emulators and right way to set them up I’ll pay u for ur time.
Its a good how to video but I'm not understanding where you get the "sega games" for the games folder you're creating to add to the emulator you're setting up. I'm trying to do neo geo and arcade games. Thx!
Awesome video, thank you!
I followed the tutorial and retroarch does not autolaunch.
mrbill317 are you still having problems with this? I had to do a search for Retroarch* in Windows file explorer you looking for the retroarch cores folder if you open it if you installed the cores with the interface you copy the dll extensions and place them under the launch box directory under the cores folder and paste them there you it now should work. I figure that one out on my own as it was driving me cabin fever crazy.
Jorgito Yokiro Cabrera I figured it out. Just need to figure some other things out.
Angelo Restrepo What other things?
Draconic Alchemist how to do an update properly last time had to restore everything it took me about 18 hours
Falls over at the first hurdle: the exe won’t load. Tried win7 and win10. Event viewer says Faulting application name: retroarch.exe. Faulting module name: unknown. Any ideas anyone?
Same to me
Excellent video, thanks for the great video my friend
for anyone who cant start roms from launchbox via retroarch, here is the answer (worked for me):
forums.launchbox-app.com/topic/31088-retroarch-wont-launch-from-launchbox/
This man is a god
I can’t find retroarch application when I open retroarch .. I’m trying to get cores
can someone tell me why RetroArch wont work on Lunchbox for Neo Geo games for some reason Neo Geo game on RetroArch wont launch through lunchbox . it did work like 1 week but not anymore i unstalled lunchbox like 3-4 times still no luck ..
ok, so after hours of working through this you have to use the default cores in retroarch that launch box/big box has. lol well if I would have just watched this video like 4 hours ago
Does it work on Android too? I tried to run The Ocean Hunter on Mame but there were only error messages....
How to change the language of menu? I don't have English set up as the default one idk how to change it.
I have a drobo server. All my stuff are there. Unfortunately, in 2022, this is not the case. For some reason, games don't want to load and have a lot of missing ones as well. For example, Super Mario doesn't show up in launchbox but it's payable on an emulator.
Same as Wardner and a few other mame roms.
Thanks. I finally did it.
I thought LB and RA were both front ends for all the emulators. But this makes it sound like LB is the front end for the games and RA is the front end for the emulators, and you need both of them to make a working setup. I'm kind of more confused now than before...
I mean LB and RA are both front-ends technically, but RA does the actual emulation so it works as a back-end in any other front-end you want to use too (in this case LB).
In the context of LB RA is just another emulator.
Just downloaded the latest version of RA and Launchbox and have already downloaded a core for RA and played a game, but when i try and added retroarch it says that i havent downloaded a core for the emulator i want to add when i actually have, any ideas?
Thank you for this great tutorial, I have subbed to the channel
I love this!!! You have my support $$$
You mention Adding your own cores. That are not in the list in launch box. I see you can couch in the blank boxes. But what are your suppose to name than all that launching recognizes them
How to switch from the emulator I was using, for all of my psx games, to retroarch? Or would I have to re import everything? Selecting what to launch with... doesn't seem to be working for me.
gracias
jajaja amiga ves el video en ingles y comentas en español e igual te dan un corazon xdddd
another great video thanx
What about configuring your controller?
Did you find out how to do it ?
My problem with RetroArch is that 8BitDo SF30 Pro controller isn't properly recognized. I'm getting frustrated trying to get it to work properly.
Please help I cannot seem to get my MAME Roms working in Launchbox using Retroarch. When I run the roms in retroarch they work but not in launchbox.
Ive had nothing but screen tearing issues from retroarch. Both redream and vanilla mame work great in launchbox. I would not even install retroarch
How do I get to the cheats menu and enable cheats in windows 10?
Whats better? Retroarch or using individual emulators like dolphin and citra
Easy answer: It totally depends on the emulator
Overall RetroArch has most options for every emulator. If you find there is a feature missing that you want, just download the emulator. I myself have not yet found anything I needed that RetroArch didn't have
So say I import a bunch of Genesis games. Get them all set up in launchbox, but then want to add more roms later? Do I have to re-do the import part?
Hi.. Please help. Downloaded cores. Opened Launchbox. Add emulator... Associated platforms say "MISSING CORE FILE".
i want to play 3DS games but it doesnt have the associated platform on i, what do i do?
I give up, I've looked everywhere trying to understand how to get this to work but frick it. I got this to play the shinging force 3 trilogy, but its not worth the work. T_T
You don't know how to play emulators?
@@oasisbeyond it's not just an emulator, retroarch has hundreds of emulators within the app
Hi ! I have a problem..I downloaded cores on RA, but Launchbox dont recognize them...missing core messages appear..What can I do?
Every time I use this program I hit a wall, something does not work, I do not understand the fascination with it at all. I use it for Saturn because its the only thing I can get working and am trying (and failing) to get it working with PS1 but games will absolutely not launch from Launchbox through Retroarch. I strongly dislike Retroarch.
Yes I feel the same. When it works it's brilliant, but there are so many weird quirks you need to know about to get things working properly. Some really simple things, such as setting a default resolution for all the games running on a single core, don't work as you'd expect
you need to have windows pro
Can you use A controller with just retro arch, or can you only use one if the original emulator supports them
Why not use Mame directly? Retroarch appears to be a front end, so we are using one front to access another front end that runs the core we need?
I am currently doing an install of Mame games on LaunchBox. Maybe I'll find out why I need retroach?
So yeah. I got a surface pro 4 and i can only use the mouse to naviguate in retroarch and cannot go back, and i just can't manage to make it work past installing it....... what the hell....
If I've already downloaded an emulator independently of retroarch how do I move it into retroarch? / if I simply redownload the emulator but via retro arch how do I move old save states into retroarch
I did all the steps but when I try to launch a game off of launchbox, it won’t open retroarch. Can you please help. Also how do I know what cores was downloaded already in retroarch.
hello guys,i just follow all the steps to make it work, after the games was listed in my Launchbox i start a game but it crushes its writing that retroArch.exe. stopped working,
i7 7700,gtx 1080Ti,32Gb,Windows 10,64.
Can you tell me please what may is wrong.
I got the latest driver for my cards,
thanks anticipated, Pantelaios P.
If I wanted to setup RetroArch / LauncBox but have it run on my CRT MAME arcade build, where do you setup your controller mapping since I have a custom control panel? Do I have to map controls for each individual emulator like you do in hyperspin?
So how do you leave out of retroarch is it + & - button at the sametime?
do you NEED launch box to play games on retroarch? because i have several game roms and ISOs already on my computer
whoa i didn't know about this launchbox am heading straight to get it, i have a question though i have my retro arch 1.70 with psx re armed core but the memory card saving doesn't work is there any way to activate it? every time i try to save in lets say parasite eve 1 it just says save failed, many thanks for the info and have a great day
R.I.P. Cemu
I downloaded the files from retro arch.com for my pc which is a 64 bit. I am having a problem with the application which for some reason the icon on the retro arch is black. is there a way to fix this.
How do you get an usb controller working in RetroArch? I have tried three different USB controllers and none of them work in RetroArch or in any of the games. They keyboard works fine but could you provide guidance on setting up a controller?
Also having same problem I am starting to hate retroarch! If ya figure it out please let me know thanks
For me I had to use the keyboard to switch input 1 (in the input section) and then hit "save and exit" in the main menu to keep the settings
also make sure you have drivers for some controllers. The 360 controller has official download drivers for PC's
mine work just fine and retro arch already has them configured for you
Hey! i have spent hours trying to set all of the emulators on retroarch. I have no idea what im doing wrong but ive followed step by step instructions and none of my roms will load. I need help! Please help!
Umm, am I the only one who's confused? How did we go from 'Installing RetroArch' to 'Copying it to LaunchBox'? What is LaunchBox? I guess it must be a prerequisite to installing RetroArch, but it would be nice to cover that in this video too. Now I have to stop, go find another video for installing LaunchBox, then come back.
but what about setting the graphics and stuff ?
Do you still need to add the Bios for cores that need them? Thanks.
I keep getting error when i try and open it iv tried both downloads any ideas xx
You need an extraction software, like he said... Get winrar...
It says I am missing a file when I download and try launching the exe file
Thanks!!!! :DDDD
Hey thanks for all the videos. I’m confused thoe why do u use retroarch in launchbox? Can’t u just download the emulators to launchbox and skip that step? What I’m I missing here?
m3kid Because There emulators in RetroArch , no need to find emulators on the web ourselves , I guess.
I have an issue. I tried this with NES. Everything works fine with the Nestopia.exe, but the sound is all choppy when I use retroarch. Playing with the audio settings do nothing? Do I just abandone retroarch?
Nevermind, it does the same thing with Nestopia while running through launchbox. Please help.
this doesnt work. paid users wasted time and money with this. did everything you did exactly. got nothing when pressing play like other users have stated. are refunds possible?
I keep getting an error message when trying to loas nes games no sestopa
you are my god
I had an old build of Windows 10 Pro. LaunchBox would give me an error about the .NET framework so I looked into it and the only option I had was to update Windows. Did that and it works. On the previous build of Windows. RetroArch would give me an error straight away saying, "Program could not start". On this newer build, I don't get an error but it still does not load. It's like it can't be fuckin' bothered to tell me that it can't be fuckin' bothered. Very frustrating!
how do you find out if your system is 32 or 64?
what about emulators not listed in the core list? snes9x, project64,fusion etc?
He brings that up at 5:55 minutes in...
No links for the zip programs?
What is the advantage of having retroarch in launch box?
nothing

I'm not understanding why to use LaunchBox if you have RetroArch, or why use RetroArch if you have LaunchBox...
Can someone explain?
you can add other emulators that retroarch doesnt have cores for. as well as various PC game sources like Steam & Origin and have it all under one front end.
Oh... well, in that case, guess what I'm going to do.
Where can i download bios for 3do?
How can I just update RetroArch?
Just download smaller Retroarch file (approx 10 megs) from their download page and extract it to a previous install, be sure to make a backup just in case something goes wrong.
is that ETA Prime ?
Great video!!! Question can you do one tutorial for Android PLZ!!! For mame :) i am trying to play Gauntlet Legends 1.6 but nothing work T.T
can yucan you play £DS games on this?
woww
Since 2018 a lot has changed. Check out our current process for using RetroArch in LaunchBox: ua-cam.com/video/vXfkDPg9cJU/v-deo.html
Hey eta. It appears that setting you showed us before is gone - the one where you enable the analog joystick. Is that true? Also, why didn't you put that AutoHotKey Script in there? Is that not necessary any longer? You know...
; This section closes the emulator when pressing Escape
$Esc::
{
Process, Close, {{{StartupEXE}}}
}
Also, a couple of days ago, I tried updating the previous version to this one and it said some usb .dll was missing. So I downloaded the entire 64 bit portable and copied all files in the root over instead of just the usual retroarch.exe and retroarch_debug.exe which I usually get in that _RetroArch.7z download which has just those two files and then I updated everything that's update-able within RetroArch. Everything seems OK.
That AHK script is only needed for specific emulators, the default keyboard key to quit Retroarch is "escape" so the normal controller automation should work just fine. You can also set a button combo within Retroarch itself to exit if you want to. As for updating if you download the small 10mb file that @Lord Monkus mentions above and you get missing .dll errors you just need to download the redist package from the download page and instal that to you Retroarch folder.
can i use this for android and use ZArchiver?
I've given this a try & keep getting "retroarch.exe system error X the code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_43.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." I have reinstalled multiple time but the error keeps popping up, help!
Thanks for the reply thru FB, did the trick.
You just need to install www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Worked like a charm, thank you!
Don't you have a tutorial of RetroArch without using LaunchBox?
What is the best controller to play RetroArch?
I have the xarcade tankstick. It has the trackball and two players. Its great but notwithout small issues.
Is there a telegram group for this service or discord?
core updater doesn't exist in my retroarch
How are the Pokémon games with this?!?!
hello I wanted to give you my most sincere congratulations for your titorial. I wanted to know if you managed to run sega naomi on BigBox? thank you in advance
I just cant get it to work with SNES games it doesnt open retroarch at all
Playerz714 I had the same problem, but the problem was the core and the code line on launchbox. Go to the cores folder from retroarch and delete all snes cores you have there. Download it again on retroarch and you'll see that there's only the version 2010 from the emulator. Then check for perfect spell on the launchbox (manage emulators) using the core name.
just get a snes classic and mod it way easier
Is it free games?
Just downloaded Dropbox, I can't find the "Emulators" folder in the LaunchBox folder. It isn't there, and I have no idea why or how.
You make that folder yourself
You have to make one yourself
