  • In this short series of videos I'm looking in detail at the 5 phases of the system of car & motorcycle control. Gear is the fourth phase, so here's my advice on the correct use of the gearbox (manual and automatic) and how this phase is still relevant to cars without a gearbox.
The first video in this series is here:

The penny has dropped, that makes everything click into place, an aha moment. This video on gears helps the other videos click into place. Thanks. Can I suggest, a video, that I don't think gets covered, but a demonstration drive that includes sat nav use, driving while trying to navigate unknown routes using sat or written directions. It's something I find challenging, and very distracting when trying to do it myself. It will be an extension of the information stage I know. Thanks again. All your videos, and your book, are very useful reference material for those of us that want to continually improve our driving.

Ah, the old thin blue coloured Roadcraft book. It was so simple and drummed into me a long time ago. I use it as a basis to this day whatever I am driving or riding. I´d recommend anyone to get their hands on a copy if they can.
The greatest thing in this video? The across the box changes so easy to learn and keeps the transmission in a straight line, with rev matching of course.
It´s odd how many people still move the gear lever through gears they never use, to arrive at the one they want. I think it was the way they were taught, haven´t adapted (I remember DOT Driving Examiners not accepting across the box changes, failing people for it).
Good video with all points well put.

I learnt to drive in the new era so going down gears is not something I do or ever did. We used block changes and just stopping in the gear you are in. I often just lift off the gas and select the appropriate gear when needed without braking

Another informative and helpful video, thank you.
I’ve driven many Toyota cvt cars, comes with being a fleet manager. It’s interesting having hybrid and petrol CVT. Managing the transition from electric only to petrol CVT requires learning the drivetrain to be smooth and encourages sedate driving.
It you visit Cornwall you’re welcome to try one of the hybrid/cvt Toyotas I operate and I can show you some great roads I’ve tested a GR Yaris on too.

11:00 - I'm old fashioned and double declutch up and down. Just finished a few days in a 1978 Mercedes truck with 13 speed Eaton Road Ranger gearbox. I think it is easier to get clean changes by double declutching. After a few days using a truck crash gearbox my car synchro gear changes get better. Also I only push the clutch in enough to break contact (Eaton Fuller say in their manual, 'just enough to break reduction') except when moving off. In a crash geared truck flooring the clutch during moving gear changes will damage the clutch brake mechanism (which you need to select a starting gear when at idle). Then there's 'floating' the gears! Takes a few goes to get it right, it's easier with a crash box. The easiest cars to do it on were the Minis and Metros of the 1980s - I recall the look on an 'experienced' ADI when I drove him back to the BSM office in Harrow when the clutch on his Mini failed! I then used it for the weekend as he used my 'spare' Metro. Currently my 2007 Holden Astra SRi 2.2 has 140,000 miles on its original clutch.

When asked, "how do you start slowing down ", most drivers say, "well, I go on the brakes ", when in actual fact you come off the accelerator first, then the brakes, and the lower the gear your in, the more pronounced the vehicle will slow down. So in a higher gear the loss of speed is barely noticeable, whereas coming off the gas in 1st gear and the car stands on its nose!

Instead of G for Gear, maybe T for Transmission?
Do to it, or let it do, what needs to be done to settle before the acceleration phase.

If you drive a Honda, make sure vtec kicks in before you change gears

Will there be a gear episode covering bikes specifically?

So Heel and toe technique would be the only way to do a rev match while braking and changing gears?

    • @squicker
      @squicker День тому

Yes, unless you have auto-rev matching, which is very handy
