So jealous. I can't figure this stuff out but I'm trying and I certainly won't give up and with any luck I'll have a lawn that looks even a fraction as good as your.
Man that is awesome. Thanks for the “how to” and time estimates. You’ve got a beautiful property and appear to be doing an awesome job with it. Amazing amount of work. Way to go man
Justin, I'm year 2 of a weed/fescue to Zenith renovation. I don't have the equipment, time, or irrigation to have taken it on all at once, so I've broken it into sections over the past couple of years. I have some areas that, like you show, are as thick as sod. Other areas are getting there, but won't fill in this season. In your experience, has putting down pre-emergents hurt your zoysias ability to spread and fill in any bare areas? I've read online that it can inhibit horizontal growth by "clubbing" the roots. Having spent the past 2 seasons doing multiple post-emergent herbicide applications, I really want to move to a pre-emergent, but worried about the potential effect it would have.
I’ve always used preemergent the same year (fall) that I seeded. I also use preemergent in the spring and fall and it doesn’t seem to affect the zoysia spreading. It thickens up every year.
Pre-emergent functions by impeding cell division. It can hurt root establishment. I have typically heard the advice to let your grass get a FULL growing season under its belt before hitting it with pre-emergent. That means if you planted in August, you'd wait 2 winters. But hey, try it and let us know!
I've done several rounds of zenith seeding now over the last 2 years and I'm about to do another little area this year. Wanting to try pre germination but not sure if it's good idea with zenith.
I’ve never done it but I’ve seen some posts where people have and been successful. It would speed up the process and help your chances of not having a thunderstorm wreck it.
It looks awesomeeeee!!! 🙌 What HOC are you maintaining? Thank you for your videos, my 1st season zoysia seed is doing pretty decent and growing. It’s encouraging! I’m excited for next season to see how it fills in.
With weekly watering/rain, how long does it take for zenith to grow an extra inch taller? I have read Zenith grows vertically much faster than the Emerald but I can't get a very good gauge how often it needs cutting.
Not sure how it compares to emerald but I do cut mine 2-3x/week. A lot will depend on how you manage it, especially how much you fertilize and how low you cut it. The lower you cut, the more frequently you’ll have to cut so you stay within the 1/3 rule.
Syngenta has recently come out with Recognition. It has a safening effect when used with their Fusilade II herbicide, that allows you to mix with a higher rate of Fusilade without damaging zoysia. I've followed some USGA trials, where it will supposedly smoke unwanted bermuda, even when zoysia is still in its infancy. I don't know if it's hit the open market yet, but I've been keeping my eye out for next year (I also have bermuda coming into my zoysia).
@jebrown1980 I think that's the stuff my local supply house said to use but it's expensive. I need to figure out what I'm doing before dropping coin on it.
I've used Sedgehammer to take out a ton of kyllinga and nutsedge that was coming up during one of my seedings. That took care of it without hurting any of my zoysia.
I usually just reedge my beds once per year. It doesn’t creep nearly as much as Bermuda. Not really much you can do to prevent it other than edge and spray the occasional roundup.
Ohh yea. Got burned out on making/editing videos. I’ll try to get back into it this season. It’s a lot of time for not really any money so it’s hard to find the motivation to be honest.
This is the 1 year (2 growing season) update on the seeded Zenith Zoysia grass backyard renovation.

Excellent! You have done a great job!
Beautiful seeded Zenith Zoysia lawn, congratulations!
I appreciate it
Looks great.
Thank you!

I’m glad they’ve been helpful.
Thanks!
Been looking forward to seeing a video from you. Yard looks great...
I appreciate it! Everything’s looking good. Just haven’t had much time.

@@ZoysiaRUs thanks! Also, I've really appreciated following your projects over the past year. It's really helped with my own.
@@jebrown1980 glad to hear!

What did your water schedule look like initially?
3-4x/day spaced evenly throughout the day for a few minutes. It’ll vary, but the goal is to keep it moist all day initially
You helped me a lot on my 6,500 sf yard. It’s looking good now. What fall and spring weed prevention do you use for your zenith zoysia
Good to hear!
I don’t use much of anything other than preemergent.
Do you think pre germinating a 2lb bag of zenith would work out well?

2” currently.
The second year is when it really takes off!

I'm trying to keep burmuda out of my zoysia. Any input would be great.
It’s a constant battle.
Fusilade and triclopyr is a good combo.
New option is fusilade and recognition combo.

Did you ever have any kyllinga weeds in the grass ?
Not in this project. I did the first year in my front yard.

@@jebrown1980 good deal. I’ve had good luck with sedgehammer in the past as well. It seems to be easy on the zoysia.
Any update on the resent seeding by the swale
I’ll do an update video on it soon.
What is your method for keeping a crisp edge on your garden beds with this type of grass that shoots out runners?
I usually just reedge my beds once per year. It doesn’t creep nearly as much as Bermuda.

I’ve been maintaining it at 2” this year.
