I'll follow back someone on the insta (@SamsOxfordStudies - I only follow seven people!) who correctly comments how many times I said Worcester in the Worcester section at the end - comment below 🤣👇
I currently have an offer from Somerville and THANK YOU for putting it in the video 😭 I think I screamed a little when I saw that it was one of the colleges you selected. Somerville is my first choice (I chose it mainly for the fact you can live in the college for all 3/4 years) but I couldn't find many reviews or information on it compared to other colleges. All the tutors and students I met in the (virtual) interviews were very lovely people but the college feels very underrated and sort of invisible like you said. (especially since I'm an international student and only have the internet for research)
@@Sam.Kramer OMG- Hi Sam! I've been binging your videos and they were so helpful during the application process, so thank you so much for making them! My offer is for PPE, although I am slightly struggling to meet conditions (and my exams may be cancelled due to COVID and I'm not sure if my predicted grades will be enough to pass my condition 😭)
@@Sam.Kramer Hopefully not, but I'm in China doing IB. 😂My city is currently having 4k+ positive cases every day (which is insane for China's standards) and I've been in lockdown for 2 weeks and there is currently a half-city-wide shutdown.... I don't know, I hope the exams are still going ahead for us ahhahaah
I got an offer from Oriel, and I applied there. I didn’t know its reputation when I applied, I applied for Classics and English and had no idea which college to choose. I saw a video that recommended you apply for a college that you know offers your degree every year. On the video for the degree on the website, one of the students mentioned that they were at Oriel, so I applied there. I only found out about its reputation after! I had no guidance on this kind of stuff :/
Congrats first of all! Really don't worry if you are, I promise, I just had to find some things to say about each college that are maybe somewhat true but far from uniformly! I really like everyone I know at Oriel :)
Please don't stress - Oriel is fab with lovely people!! I applied for similar reasons, and I'm really happy there (1st yr). Honestly Sam's not wrong about the reaction you get when you say you go there, but it's all light-hearted and everyone likes to take the mick out of other colleges so it's not deep. It's a great environment, location, size, it's beautiful, great tutors, and everyone within college makes jokes about the reputation too but I would guess the balance of political views probs is the same as you would get at most colleges (it's not Toriel, promise). Hope to see you in Oct!! x
The crucial factor is a garden (and I don't count a quad with benches as a garden). It's surprising how many colleges don't have one, including Brasenose and many in the centre. The Merton Street colleges are absolutely lovely and I have always thought there is something special about being south of the High. For a classicist, CCC should be near top of the list. I agree with you on Univ. Christ Church is beautiful and grand, but lacks the intimate college feel. It's also a major tourist attraction, which is a bit offputting as well. I'd put it in the 2.1 category.
Hiii, Im so confused on what college I should go for... Im leaning towards lady margaret hall, new college and balliol, but i'd love to get other's opinions
Would love to hear your opinion of Balliol ( my old college) and Jesus (my son's). It's so subjective isn't it? And really it's about the people you meet. The one college I would NOT have wanted to go to was Christ Church. Too grand. Too Brideshead. I would worry about going to Johns, Merton and New ( a bit joyless). All the ex women's colleges seem really fun. If I had my time again I'd probably apply Wadham or Somerville (as long as you get accommodation all years...) but I reckon you get to love your college wherever you end up.
I go there and I think it's a good combination of pretty and relaxed. Also, I'm a first year and I know several of the geographers well - they'll probably be your college parents next year and they're really nice!
Why would anyone apply to Oriel? Well, here’s a guess: people apply to Oriel because it provides arguably the best social life of any college. It is very sporty being by far the best at rowing with other solid sports teams. It is medium sized so not too big and not too small and it is centrally located without being bombarded by tourists and it is among the oldest colleges with no ugly brutalist bits ruining the aesthetic. It is by far the most traditional college, with, for example the option for formal hall 6 times a week. It also one of the strongest academic colleges routinely coming in towards the top of the Norrington Table. It is friendly and welcoming and one of the few politically moderate colleges with genuine intellectual diversity that isn’t overwhelmed or dominated by a single (leftist) viewpoint.
Super nice college, probably top tier, beautiful place. Reputation of being v academic and maybe slightly competitive with it (which could be a good or less good thing) :)
My cousin (who’s currently there) seems to love it. She says it’s really friendly, and not too pressurising (although she is quite hard working). It’s also quite a big and sociable college, so there’s people for everybody. I’m pretty sure your daughter will have a good time.
If I apply to economy faculty in entrepreneurship major, which is the closest college to my department building? My first consideration is about accessibility. If anyone can help me with recommendation, I'd be very happy 😊
I needed AAA (Ox give 'low' offers coz they want u to meet it after they have carefully considered you w interviews etc), but in reality I think most people exceed it
@@Sam.Kramer would love to see Harris Manchester, Jesus, Queens, and maybe a few new ones like Kellog for contrast. Also could stick in a few bizarre ones like St Benet’s
I'm here because I want to know what are you gonna talk about Christ Church. It was my first choice, already after I searched a few. But I don't know about other ones and want to know them too. So, yeah it's pretty good to watch, all together. (Yes, also because of reasons like, I knew harry potter likely dining hall and bridge one. Another one is New college, which I know especially with Hugh Grant and also hp unforgettable scene)

I wonder if I would have ranked it differently if tourists were allowed in these days for us to see them!

Love the correct ranking for Christ Church!! ❤️❤️❤️
Lol, so far ive got the most hate for this pick
Thanks for giving us at Lincoln some love ❤
Which college did I rank most incorrectly?
Why no lady margaret? Sus.
Might do a part 2 (and 3) with the remaining colleges, i did about 1/3 ish in this video :)
@@Sam.Kramer yes pls! I'm trying to choose where to apply so this would be really useful

I did English. My son is doing Physics.
