    Thanks for putting this on. I was thinking of riding over this road on my vstrom but looks like that might not be a good idea.

      It was really bad last year cause of a small rock slide. If you are a good rider you can do it but I would take a friend.

    As someone who lives in the area and has made that ride on various MCs, I just shake my head at the idea of taking an overloaded, heavy-as-hell "Adventure Bike", just to prove nothing. It's a fun run with something like a Woodsrunner or even a Trials Bike (I used to compete on those), but life's too short for those heavy bikes with the washer, dryer, and refrigerator on top. Takes the enjoyment out of beautiful view and a fun ride.

    Probably the best video to watch if you're thinking of going to this area. Hope you heeled well. It's not all peaches and cream like some of the other video's show. Went to Silverton for the Loop, etc... You'll be struggling on a switchback or something then a Range Rover will go by with the family all wearing Izod shirts with Spot waiving to you, LOL. I learned a lot there. The first thing I learned is the people up there are super friendly and helpful, you're not really alone. Second if I may, take half the stuff out of your bags, you won't need it. It's just going to weigh you down. But obviously take that with a grain of salt and some common sense. And lastly if your on a KTM bring a little clutch fluid, you may need it, LOL. Stay safe and thanks

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 Super Tenere and a KLX250S. I have been going back and forth with which one to take. Going to take the KLX250S now after watching this video. Yeah, what a quarry up there. Going to ride COBDR July 2021.

      Since you are taking the smaller bike I would spend a little extra time in section 2. Its the best part of the COBDR by far.
      You could:
      Follow the COBDR over Ophir pass to highway 550
      Take 550 to Black Bear pass into Telluride
      Take Imogene pass out of Telluride back to highway 550
      Pick the COBDR back up and do the south section of the Alpind loop (just follow the COBDR route) to Lake city
      Take Engineer pass back to highway 550 (north section of the Alpine loop)
      Then take the alternate easy section of the COBDR back to Lake city
      This is an excellent couple of loops and you won't regret spending the extra day or so hitting them since your in the area.

    The SuperT is 560lbs with no gear. My ATwin at 510 was a nightmare on harsh terrain. I got tired of having to get helped out of the mud. I can do anything on my DR now

    got my super tenere stuck at the same spot in that loose stuff as well you have to have lots of momentum or it gets buried, had to walk ride it past that section then just kept speed up for the rest.

    I have never seen anyone make this pass look so hard. To those who might get deterred from this video then don't. We did this pass on 550lb bikes and it was a piece of cake.

    Man I was just doing simple gravel dirt roads and my Super Tennere was like a ship with no rudder. This pass is not for me. Thanks for the heads up. I think I wanna stick to the paved Twisties, it's fun and well within my skill set.

    We just did this West to east on 9/13. This trail (in this direction) is no joke on big bikes. The weather was cooperating but it was a real bitch. I'm a newer rider myself and my F850gsa doesn't have the low end torque to run slow so I really had to ride it fast and correctively steer through the chaos... Crazy! Probably a lot more scary than it was dangerous. The biggest factor was all the self- balancing bikes (cars) that had no idea what they were doing on that one way section. Maybe an extra 100lbs of moto camping gear didn't help either🤪 What a day!

      The guy on the S10 got a T7 this year and we went back to finish the COBDR since he got turned away. We ended up doing black bear as part of the Alpine loop which was another great ride. He didn't want any more of Ophir though 😂.

  • @KarlB

    That's not a road, it's a quarry. I drove the pass east to west in an AWD CR-V a few weeks before you, opposite your direction. That rocky section was like plowing thru dinner plates, and I don't think I would have made it running east.
    The guy who predicted that it was better once it turned left up the switchback where your friend got his ride may not have been correct. For me it was almost as loose and much rougher.
    Glad everyone is ok.

    • @1255cgraham
      @1255cgraham  3 роки тому

      What the video doesn't show is for about 45 minutes we tried to get a CRV unstuck from that section that was going the same way we were. Finally had to just have them back it back down. Sure did some cosmetic damage to that new looking car!

    • @KarlB
      @KarlB 3 роки тому

      Going down the difficult section, I passed true 4x4 vehicles who were struggling and were surprised I made it. Reviews I had read somewhere noted that westbound would make gravity a friend in the loose section. I had no clearance issues, only 1-2 loose rocks that hit my hitch receiver.
      Will you two go back to conquer it again, maybe on lighter bikes?

    • @1255cgraham
      @1255cgraham  3 роки тому +1

      @@KarlB I've done it several times on my DR650 with little issues (as part of the COBDR).
      This ride convinced my fried to get a lighter bike and once he healed up he traded the Super Tenere for the Tenere 700.
      We are going back in August for another go.

    For all the out of state out of shape newbs on big heavy bikes... You are log jammers who are way over your heads out here. This isn't the city. Stay on the sidewalks until you learn how to keep momentum in talus....on 250s.

    Y’all don’t belong there. A dual sport will be just fine. A Tenere is not really a good bike for the alpine loop. I know it’s marketed as an ADV, but it’s just way to heavy. I would do it on a KLR 650, or even a Versys 300. A Honda Africa Twin would be a good choice. But a Tenere is like trying to take a Volvo over the pass.
