An old friend of mine was playing on an under card for Buddy and his band. After his set, he went backstage and tried to chat Buddy up a bit. Apparently, that was a bit awkward. The promoter came back stage and told Mr. Rich that it would be about another 5 minutes before they were ready for him to go on. Buddy pulled a fifty cent piece out of his pocket, and held it against the wall with a drum stick. He then began playing a drum roll on the coin and kepping it in place on the wall while he waited out the short delay.
Now that is a story I've never heard before. But I believe it !
I grew up hearing Buddy Rich. My dad was a big fan and I'm so glad that he turned me onto him at a young age. So, so fast and so, so good! Buddy is the GOAT!
There are - and have been - some incredible drummers that should be all be appreciated and respected in their own right. Then there’s Buddy, out on his own…peerless. 🥁
The GOAT! Perfect technique! A perfectionist in his craft! Wonderful!
He’s doing so much with less kit than a lot of drummers do with much bigger kits today do. Just imagine him with one of the big modern kits of today. He isn’t just a drummer he has amazing technical ability and creativity.
Think about this. He was in his early 50s here. Astonishing power and speed but with delicate touch and taste. A real phenom to be sure!
The Goat , no one ever played like that.
Buddy remains my favorite of all time, followed distantly by Dave Weckl and Virgil Donati
I'm close to 70 now and began learning percussion at age 11...
That's a very interesting selection of drummers. To put Buddy above Donati shows great understanding of drumming. Most kids would automatically have laughed at that (most kids are stupid anyway). Buddy's rudimental proficiency and brilliant flow of ideas cannot be matched.
Buddy rich is and always will be my favorite drummer period
Did you say one of the best? Buddy is the best. Between him and Estepario. It's very hard to choose. What would buddy Rich be able to do with today's enhancements? For sure he is capable of taking the double pedal far and beyond. I wouldn't call Buddy one of the best and I wouldn't call Estepario one of the best because he is the best, it just depends who's in the the conversation.
1:49 "That's crazy" - about as honest and accurate a technical appraisal of BR as can be offered!
Buddy Rich is the GOAT. I'm surprise his sticks did not burst into flames after he was finish !!
Buddy Rich was pretty much what Bruce Lee was to martial arts, AWESOME 🥁🥁
The man was born to be a drummer. He just becomes one with the kit, it's amazing to watch, and it never gets old.
When drums sounded like DRUMS!
One of the best? THE BEST, for sure bar none. No other drummer before or after him could match his speed, endurance, ideas and look behind the drums! No other drummer personified big band leadership power behind the set as he did!
I love Joe Morello from Dave Brubeck Quartet . He’s a fantastic player. “Castilian Drum” from the live album “Live At Carnegie Hall ‘63”. You must check it out.
Awesome solo by one of the best drummers that ever lived... Period!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👊🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼
A lot of people held their sticks like that! It's called a jazz grip.
Buddy rich and Ed Shaughnessy
many drummers still use this grip. it hasn't gone away. it's called traditional grip and it comes from the military drum discipline.
Yes, my all-time favourite!
The greatest musician ever. Period
Buddy Rich was the Best Drummer! He was one of the Best in the 1960’s. By the 1970’s he was Simply Amazing. He was and always will be a Legend!
RIP Buddy.
As much as I love John Bonham's skill, he can't hold a candle to Buddy Rich.
Greats, like Rich and Krupa, were strong on jazz technique. Bonham fashioned himself after these legends. So, I disagree that he couldn't keep up.
What I loved about Bonham was that he tuned his drums very similarly - Very open with no dampening. (The way God intended 😊) Definitely unique in a rock band setting.
@@NewYawkahBroad Bonham was awesome but he definitely isn't even in the same league.
No drummer alive or dead could even come close to rich I would say the only drummer that had that kind of speed is Carl palmer and he's nowhere near rich
@@NewYawkahBroad I love Zepplin and the stuff Bonham played, but I've never seen Bonham do anything close to this. Maybe someone could point me to a good Bonham solo? The solo he did in Moby Dick isn't, IMO, very good.
BUDDY RICH !!! G.O.A.T. He had no equal, past, present or future.
Yup
Anyone who says Buddy Rich is not The Best Ever, is a fool.
Saw buddy Nottingham 1971 absolute legend...
Check out Buddy's solo 1971 while touring in Paris. The tightest snare I've ever heard him play yet every bit as crisp as it can be. Simply amazing.
Favorite, for sure.
My favorite is an old one on the Jerry Lewis show. It was in black-and-white. Best solo I’ve ever seen.
The GOAT!
Just love that snare drum speed and control, finger control , fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibres highly developed 😊
Favourite is a subjective thing as I have many favourites when it comes to drummers due to style, etc.
What can’t be denied is that buddy was technically the best I’ve ever seen
Buddy Rich the best big band drummer and OVERALL best drummer ever. AND I agree, that left hand was amazing. He did it his way, no lessons, just talent.....
That left hand is insanely perfect...too perfect...
Really enjoy watching Buddy Rich doing his thing. Are you familiar with The Young Rascals drummer, Dino Danelli? He and John Bonham are my favorite drummers. I recommend watching The Young Rascals playing Been Lonely Too Long and Mickey’s Monkey live on the Ed Sullivan Show. These two performances showcase Dino. I heard that when Johnny Carson asked Buddy Rich if he likes any new drummers he said the drummer for The Young Rascals.
David Letterman also had many special Drummer's Solos that where beyond belief
Omar Haakem, and Anton Fig.
Here's my comment: I got to see him do patterns like this in the mid 1970s. I went every night for the week that his band was at the Cellar Door in Washington, DC. His style seen here in this video is, I believe, when he reached the mature stage in his playing. In the 1940's his style was forceful, fast, and just immense showy speed. But by the 70's he had become much more technical. He added color, you might say. The symbol work, or that rim use became a tool. The one thing he always added, particularly in 'West Side Story', was the slowing the single stroke down to a few very quiet strokes, then slowly speeding up to a crescendo of incredible speed and volume. It was a signature pattern. Who else did that? I'd call it classical drumming.
THE BEST EVER ON A DRUM KIT.
If your a drummer and don't think Buddy Rich is among the best of all time.....take up stamp collecting. Next time your practicing, throw on a suit and tie and play full throttle for about 4 min.
You commented on Buddy's left hand. Morello held the stick the same way....but he would roll it through his fingers. Crazy !
Great reaction
I love the ferocity of Buddy’s playing, and his left hand is off the charts… but my favourite drummer of all time is Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni, better known as Louie Bellson. A fantastic, experimental, swinging and groovy player, and the pioneer of double bass drum kits.
Yup, again… my favorite!
To see Buddy on film is one thing, but to experience him live was completely another. I feel sorry for the younger members of the UA-cam community who never had that opportunity. I saw him live from 1971 through 1986 about 12 times and each time he lifted me off my seat!!
Buddy Rich's drumming is like Steve Perry's singing.
Talent like theirs comes along once a century.
Nobody is in the same class as Buddy Rich.
👌🏻🤘🏻
I can remember listening to the albums and on TV. When i saw him play live i savoured the first moment walking in the hall. I remember telling myself and i knew instantly that this was going to surpass any expectations arising from hearing recordings. I recalled he was described as 'like an orchestra'. That was the closest description to the experience. The most intricate patterns constantly changing, as if he could express every thought in his mind instantly via the drums.. every idea, and every challenge could be approached and surmounted.
Just mind blowing
Oh. And stick control!!! WHAT
Buddy Rich - THE BEST - that speed was from outer space - and so accurate. No one came close...and he did it with suimple drum sets and often wearing a suit - at an older age. He was a freak of nature.
The most impressive thing was how high up in the air those sticks were while that single stroke roll was played. He played it LOUD, incredibly clean, controlled, fast with endless stamina. The best.
Buddy was my favorite drummer of all time. Billy Cobham is my favorite living drummer.
Virtuosity on any instrument is entertaining, and also serves to elevate the art form to inspire musicians to transcend mediocrity by showcasing what is possible. Buddy Rich did this for drummers, Art Tatum for piano players, Stanley Clarke, & Jaco Pastorius for bass players. And so on.
So don't be satisfied with your current level of expertise: reach for excellence, strive for mastery of your chosen instrument!
Carl Palmer...Buddy admired HIS playing...Buddy overall is the GOAT though...His work with his and other swing bands are what puts him at the top.
Buddy rich and Gene Krupa. Are legends
I don't get it about Krupa , if you've watched the drum match between Rich and Krupa it was sorely embarrassing for Krupa as Buddy made Gene look like he was drumming in slow motion, it wasn't even close who was the better drummer. Krupa even admitted when asked about Rich saying " Buddy Rich is the best drummer to ever walk the planet"
I should do a "musician reacts to drummer reacting to Buddy Rich" - it'd be hilarious!
There's not a drummer alive today that could play that solo.
HOLDING THAT LEFT STICK "OLD SCHOOL"
super sound
Some say he made a deal with the Devil. Idk what Buddy got, but the Devil got drum lessons.
BEAST MODE!!
All about technique. No mention of touch or music.
Not only is Buddy my pick for , The Best but, he was also a friend. ❤
Check out Buddy Rich The Tonight Show 1966. The classic West Side Story.
My favorites are Elvin Jones, Dennis Chambers, Jack DeJonette, Max Roach, Papa Joe Jones, Al Foster, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Al Shonesey, Steve Gadd, and Joe Morello. OK and Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich is 53 years old here.
yes
Would love to see any drummer match Buddy!
You won't Buddy Rich was 1 of a kind .
WOOOO!! BABY! What can ya say👌
Buddy Rich was a savant on the drums, no has ever come anywhere near his abilities. Like someone once said "there was Buddy and then there was everyone else"
Crazy thing that if you look at the snare, you can see that he was hitting it so hard he was damaging it.
"Untouchable!"...
"Slowing it down" just as he starts speeding up again
I'd have to go with Carl Palmer
neil peart of rush
Greatest Of All Time!!!
Check this drum solo out. Morgan Agren "neyveli"😊
Colby this is masterful right there the greatest ever no doubt
I liked John Bonham, Keith Moon, Pierre van der Linden and for the girls, Sheila E
Look up a drummer named Ed Shaughnessy.
Buddy and Ed had a battle of the drums and Ed held his own but still couldn't beat Buddy's speed and admitted Buddy Rich the G.O.A.T
Thanks for telling me he's hitting the rim to make different sounds
I love Buddy Rich, he was so amazing. I have a short clip available for you to check out if you want bro. 😁🤘 It's a double pedal foot warm up short video.
You should do a reaction for Joe Morello. As good as Buddy Rich. A lot more humble too.
He was NOT as good.
All I know is that my left wrist and forearm would start to burn and loose gas. So frustrating!
Buddy Rich is the goat for sure but I searched your channel and I don’t think you’ve ever reacted to Phil Collins and if you react to Phil Collins especially a concert you have to react to the drum battles with Chester Thompson
I always thought Phil's drumming back in the Peter Gabriel days was the most creative unique of all time. His odd time drum fills and feel was so fun to listen to.
Looks like he's never covered Carl Palmer either.
Buddys #1 with Max Reach # 2
not one of tha best !! THE BEST
I like Rich but I really like Carl Palmer
He is my favorite drummer of all time if it wasn't for him a lot of these guys nowadays and when I grew up probably wouldn't be around at least that's my and I don't think you hit the microphone I think it was a rimshot
And that’s when you realized you weren’t so good at it, weren’t you!?
What the old saying again!?
“Teachers teach because they can’t do”😏
Eat this!👊
one of the best? Who is better?
Grew up with BR. Then Rush came along. Different type of drummer though.
El Estapario Siberiano
Hands down he’s a freaking beast on the drums
Great but but not in Buddy's class , even at 53yrs old Rich is faster , Imagine when he was El Estapario's age.
One of the best?
Meh...I play this on my steering wheel all the time....😏
Yes…he is the GOAT. Not that poor excuse of a drummer from Rush.
Neil Peart is my number one with Buddy Rich a very close 2nd.
No way...
he was doing lots of white powder. The album cover from this era has him with a coke spoon around his neck ...
still waiting for the point of this channel and others like it... not really teaching, and not saying much of importance.
when playing fails, ... react videos!
Buddy never did drugs
Ringo is the very best drummer ever!
Ringo is the most influential rock drummer ever!
Ringo's stamina was his skill. He could not play like Rich or Krupa.
There’s always a comedian in the comments. 🤣
Obviously not a Drummer.
Obviously you're joking...
Buddy Rich was the best, and not one of the best.
John Bohnam should not be compared to buddy rich
I love his playing but he’s not even close to buddy
Buddy's been #1 for along time now. Hard to beat that guy.
After that, I don't ever hear Carl Palmer mentioned with the top rock/jazz drummers.
Some of the greats you can just listen to them play the drums over & over & be amazed every time.
Buddy holds his sticks in the traditionel way - so did Charlie Watts :D It's not unusual!
“ONE OF” the best?!!!
😆
Dude. Why even attempt the fairness thing? BR smashed everybody like a dog going through a hamburger.
The very best of us is a distant second, in the debris field Buddy left behind - from *there* you can start talking “apples & oranges”, and all that nice stuff.
You need to see Roy Clark perform. He could play just about any stringed instruments.
not drums. drum channel. and lots of people can play lots of things.
