You're probably one of the best artists out there. Thank you for giving me the idea to buy how to draw comics the marvel way
Ayyyy my man
I have that too. Very cool book

Good luck man
The cotton content really makes the biggest difference in my experience, cotton paper feels very different, especially if you have a realistic style or work with lots of gradients and wet in wet. It takes some getting used to but then it works so much better
I like it for some things but it's so.. permanent. It makes my looser stuff harder
1. I have to carefully put paint on the page or I get marks, even if I'm doing everything fine. So much easier on non cotton
2. It's like painting with qor for an entire piece. Sometimes I want to be in control. It hates to move on dry paper but won't stop on wet.
I guess as you work wet on wet it's wonderful then.
I work on dry and wet so it's a bit frustrating for me :)
@@gsfs8208 that really depends on the sizing of the paper though. Cotton is more absorbent in general so on average the paints will definitely lift a lot less but if you get a hard sized cotton paper that will let you lift too, especially if it's hot press. And in return the colors move and look so much more beautiful and you get much more lightfastness and durability. You can also use way more layers and still get clean results and put very wet layers on top of dry layers without completely losing them. I tend to paint quite loosely too and it definitely takes a lot of getting used to at first. But I found it very worth it. I'd recommend Saunders waterford if that's available where you live, it's definitely my favourite paper so far (esp. Because it's comparatively cheap here lmao)
It’s also naturally acid-free, whereas wood pulp based paper needs added buffering agents.
@@gsfs8208 I usually work dry on wet and ive never had a problem, maybe you’re not using enough water or the right kind of brushes? I invested in a set of artist loft watercolor brushes and they worked out a lot better for me for the paint to water ratio and control of water as well, maybe try that
Agreeee cotton paper just work so much better, they dry quickly and make the colors less lift(?) Like it's easier to layer things if you use cotton paper than cellulose
"aquarelle" does mean watercolour in French, thought I'd just confirm it for you.
You a real one.
I got you if you ever need.
We homies now, like the streets.
@@Rabbit-the-One thanks, I know cuz 8 took French for 9 years.
@@totallynotnickarno7010 sennelier taught me lol
Slt :)
I somehow read that wrong and wondered "if aquarelle isn't watercolor in French does it just mean water? So any wet medium in general can be used?"
At first I thought "Why is he drawing the flag of Lithuania 🇱🇹?"
lol thats what I was about to add a reply on love lithuania
Yeah me too
Same XD
To me it reminded me of pride flags lmao
Same lol
For anyone curious, the “lbs” or weight of paper is how much the team of 500 UNCUT sheets weighs. So you make 500 sheets of paper, trim them to a specified size and weigh it, then you cut the paper down into booklet, sketchbooks or printer paper.
That’s how it works, pretty simple!
"It's true, Seriously!" has the same energy as "Pretty cool riiiight"
Real G's know who.
Real YT shorts energy 😂
I saw jinx. And now i love you more than anything in the world like thank the lord you have drawn her ❤️🙏
Is there a seperate video of the jinx painting?
Wow that’s really helpful Scott, I love your content so so much, you are what inspired me to work harder on my art. Your my favourite artist and right now that water colour tip is just what I need, you see usually I am a digital artist or acrylic paint user? so thank you for this ❤️ your an inspiration and I love what you do so much.
the naruto shocked me ngl 💀

The first 3 colors of the swatches look like Lithuanian flag lol
I love how helpful Scott is!! I did a lot of sketching and painting growing up, but I never really cared about the supplies I was using since I was 6. I just wanted to finger paint! But now the older I get art is making more sense. I stopped doing “traditional” art and moved onto digital art, but it’s still great to know that even paper has a role when it comes to painting.
Even though I don’t do art very often, your videos are still very fun to watch! Nice video :)
Thank you for explaining this! I was halfway though a college watercolor class before we were taught the importance of using the right paper, my work improved dramatically. Word of the wise, use Canson over Strathmore.
I have never drawn a day in my life and have no interest in doing so, but this guy's videos are still good af
i always forget how many different types there are
Canson has always been my go-to brand for most of my drawings. I love how they have something for everyone while still maintaining that quality. I like how even their sketch paper is thick enough to handle light washes for quick sketches and mixed media
Right? Canson is severely underrated. I may venture to say that I like it BETTER than Arches. 😮
that swatch looks kinda like the Lithuanian flag
i’m so glad that there’s gsm below because i’m so confused by the lbs measurement, lol.
The lbs measurement is based on how much a ream (or 500 sheets of the paper weighs). So 140 lbs means that 500 sheets of that paper weighs 140 lbs. it’s a way to judge the thickness of the paper. Usually watercolor paper comes in 90 lb, 140 lb, or even 300 lb.
Hope that helps. 😀
@@anniefitzgerald4447I think it’s a joke about general US weights & measurements. The rest of the planet uses SI these days. 😊
at this point you’re the only artist i trust with my whole art career. Not that i have one but i mean if i had one.
soooo what if you did a series where you drew girls with really long hair that represents different flags?
I really have been inspired from your art !! Keep up the good work
I appreciate how much work you are putting into these videos this type of information is really helpful.
This was so cool to learn about now I know what kind of paper to use when using water color!
Thank you so much for this!!! I'm new to water color and I've been struggling with finding the right paper to use and I was tired of wetting through thin paper. I'm so glad I came across your channel 😁
**Everyone talking abt the vid**
Me: HE PAINTED NARUTO
Edit: Thanks for 9 likes!
Same! And Naruto looked really cute☺
I greatly appreciate the jinx painting under the naruto one. Arcane was fantastic!
Thank you for this brief, but clear explaination of the differences visually in these papers. Big thumbs up. 👍
I've been watching your videos a lot lately ,you inspired me to do my first gouache painting in 3 years and i haven't felt more proud of myself , thank you❤️.
Your videos are the perfect balance of informative, aesthetically pleasing and personally engaging. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your self! My favourite videos are the ones where you admit your limitations and dislikes. Multi-media artists feel pressure to master all the media, and you reminded me that we don’t have to enjoy or master the tools we don’t align with.
I agree that acrylic is yuck on paper, but it’s delish on canvas!
*favourite video included your mom and her work* 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you!!
I'm so glad you taught me this. Thanks Scott!!
I started a watercolor journal because of your channel, and I have a lot of fun using the Artisto cold-pressed, 140 lbs. 8"x5" watercolor paper. It's inexpensive and has a lot of tooth. Great for using sketch colored pencils, Zebra pens, and lots of layers of bright watercolors.
OMG! Naruto is sooooo cute 😍🥰
Is that Naruto I see???
Jinx was also there... it was probably animation themed.
This explains why the old crayola watercolors i use look so good, i have the canson paper and it works really well
The good stuff made all the colors look deeper
I own that same 140lb Canson watercolor book! Haven’t used it yet, but I definitely want to
You just summed up 100 videos I've watched trying to get the details i got from this video in seconds. ❤
I am so happy I found you! I am just starting to dabble in water color. I hated it in school because my brain didn't want to wait for stuff to dry and add layers. I was in too much of a hurry to get a piece done. But I was gifted a small sketchbook and paint set and I really wanna try now.
I recommend Arches for experienced watercolor painters. WONDERFUL!
I love using Strathmore sketchbooks for my paintings, they come out so good!
And it's also because it's the only watercolor sketchbook I can find in my area, and afford to buy.
That explains why all the watercolour at school never… ‘sat’ properly and would tear the paper REALLY fast
I've never tried water color but I've always wondered about what paper to use. Nice explanation.
Dude I love you talking ab paper you always seem to nerd out but I love it
Your one of the best artists on UA-cam and I love you Star Wars art!
Really never thought about this...The difference is quite noticeable..I think it would be a helpful guide for us to choose the right product...Thank you so much sir.
I wish this was a longer video, the shots of the comparisons were too fast
I love your shorts...they all help me out as a newbie artist
I absolutely love your art and i love your naruto♡
Just by looking at these swatches I love the Arches one it has such nice texture
Thank you Scott for these helpful videos! You've inspired me to start practicing Watercolors again🎨☺️
I have used arches before. It was 300g/m with the pink cover ( I forget the specific name ). Best paper I ever owned. Looked great ( especially with gouache ).
I am in love with that green color you are using 💚💚
I saw many artists complain about canson xl but I personally don't have a problem with it and I also use 100% cotton wc paper. Good to know that you like to use it as well☺☺
Thank you Scott for this advice
I just bought my first serious watercolor set! Your really inspiring, keep it up!
Wish you slowed it down a little at the end so we could really compare
You flew through the results so fast
Hey dude! U helped me get better at art like seriously and I improved my style! All thanks to you
I love literally all your art
I’m learning so much from this channel!
I absolutely LOVE Canson, I have a pile of like 50 Canson sketchbooks I've gone through in my closet 😄
Thank you so much for the information !
I really appreciate this guy, last 1 and a half months, my drawing was really really, AWFUL, but then I kept watching Scott, his lives, his tips, and all his progression videos. He has really helped me alot in art, and I do really appreciate his effort into these videos even though he is a small creator :) Thank you so much for the tips
Agree, I like the Canson XL for beginner watercolor students!
Thanks so much for this great information!
Can see now that the paper quality affects more than I thought! Thank you for this through demonstration!
I found this so useful! I have used Strathmore & Canson before not sure which I used for watercolor.
That red orange is just absolutely gorgeous.
Learning more from you...
Thank YOUW 😊
This man deserves all the fame and love he's been getting. He's a very good dude. Love your videos and art man!
You drew jinx! As an avid arcane lover that makes me so happy!!
i’m trying to get back into watercolour, and this is all seriously helpful! thank you!
Sooooooo true. Big difference between all the different types.
You ! You are a special guy ! I have given up on my art for sooo long, but your face keeps on popping up on my shorts, all the god damn time. And thanks to that, today I opened my sketchbook and went back on track. I’ve lost a lot of my touch, but I’m sure I’ll keep on as long as you make videos motivating me to create. I love you man ♥️
WAAAAAA, almost 600k YOU'RE GROWNING SO FASTT❤️
Honestly the most i notice is the difference of how much bullying it takes before it stars to shred up
Ty for this. I appreciate you ♥️
I didn't know you painted jinx! Just the small bit I saw of it was beautiful!
I'm an artist. But I don't use watercolor a lot. I knew about the different types of paper. This is an excellent demonstration. Thank you!
I did NOT expect that expression from Naruto at the start😂
Im starting to get into watercolor. I got a student Windsor and Newton watercolor pallete. And just today I got a few mixed media sketchbooks that will work for both alcohol markers( which is what I am used to) and watercolor. I got a canson mixed media and a fabriano mixed media. Both have thick paper and they are cold press. I'm hoping to find a good quality sketchbook that can be my go to when I need a new one. Rn I haven't found one I like all that much. So I don't have a specific one to look for when go into a store. So I hope one of these can be that go to
i use sketchbooks from five below and my art has a funky texture that im in love with
This is helpful no one ever explained this to me!
Your videos help alot thank you
this is rlly helpful. i’ve just started using watercolour and ur a great help
I used decent paper and made some amazing succulent paintings. I didn't know paper mattered so I then got Canson XL and I just couldn't recreate the same quality. I eventually ripped right through the paper just trying to scrub in a blend over a couple of primary glazes and I literally cried. I had the only art show I had ever been invited to, in two days and the kind of catch to joining was that I didn't have much time to finish a few paintings. It would have been enough time but this paper thing literally threw me into such a terrible art block spiral I didn't get a single painting done. Heck, I stopped completely once the paper ripped, believing I was a complete fraud and that my previous succulent paintings were a fluke.
A few weeks later, I remembered that I had switched paper. I wondered if that may have contributed to my failure in any small way and the youtube channel "The Mind of Watercolor" completely opened my eyes. He did a video explaining the differences betqeen paper and it turned out that I really was.good at painting succulents. It was the paper that sucked, not me!
I then learned as much as I could about paper in order to set myself up for the best success I possibly could in the many mediums with which I dabble.
You are a great artist Scott 🥰 btw I love the background music
We had to do a painting with inks at school, so the teacher told us to take paper from her table. I was the last one, and because she ran out of that paper, she gave me a different one. My painting didn't come out like everyone else's, and she yelled at me and said I didn't use the technique correctly. Even though the technique didn't work on my paper, I tried my best to follow it.
This person is the best artist literally he helps with arty stuff awesome dude ☺
Thanks for the info😭😭😭 I'm beginner n no wonder this and the cheap paints video helped me alot ❤️
Been waiting for this!! THANK YOU 🫶🏼💌
The sketch paper one wasn’t as bad as I expected though
That's awesome advice!
Hey! I think you should do some occasional drawing streams where you just draw and maybe show and explain things more in depth with a live audience!!!
Thank you for making this video!
300 lb is the heaviest and my personal favorite because you usually don't have to stretch it! Game changer for commissions
How interesting! I'm not artistic but I enjoy following you, both for informational purposes & your genuine positivity. Cheers!
There is also 300 lb watercolor paper too! I love to use it for paintings where I plan on doing a lot of wet into wet painting because it’s nice and thick so no buckling!! It’s also nice for en plein air painting because it’s so thick!
That red is just chilling
