- Another bike where the valves where blamed but it wasnt the valves. It starts and runs fine when cold but once its warmed up if its shut off it wont start back up till it cools back down. Ended up being a bad fuel pump on this Kawasaki.

Update: video is my bike and I don’t think I’ve missed a weekend since the repair. Been about 3 months or so since this issue and maybe 20 or hours. Still working great and fires right up hot or cold! SR is a beast but needs to start to cut it loose!!! Very grateful for the diagnosis and the fix! Only dude I’ll trust working on my bikes!!
Your boy with 2 kx450's had me do both the pumps, he texted yesterday letting me know he put on 2.5 hours and so far so good 👍
Today was the last ride of the season. Ever since David at Dspec in montreal did the all balls rebuild my bike has worked great. I hit 30 hours today so 11 hours since the fix. So far so good. Will keep you all posted next april lol
@@IsrafelWorld thanks for the updates. Other people have commented that they replaced with a new OEM pump and the problem returned a handful of hours later. But its nice to hear that so far the all balls kit is been a solid fix.
These later KXs are notorious for fuel pump issues, worked at a Kawi dealership for a year and I sold so many of these All Balls kit because the oem pump is always back ordered. Great video
Right! I think kawi finally updated the pump. I think they even had a recall on it. As you know when something is on backorder its cause they are selling a lot of them lol
This mechanic is a genius
Very smart
Great mechanic
Thanks!
Just wanted to say I had this issue with my 2017 as well. Swapped out the fuel pump and it started working perfect.
Nice!

Thanks for the video
It will be shared throughout south Florida!

Thanks for watching. Hopefully they get your bike back fast
Did you get a warranty I just had this happen to mine today Kx 450 maybe 20 hours and it left me stranded in the desert after 20 mins of running turned it off then went back to turn it on and just kept cranking
@@danielm16345 no we haven't heard anything from kawi yet. But with the pump being on back order as of the date the video was made you would think kawi clearly knows they have a ton of fuel pumps going out
Had an ext warranty with the dealer but now I’m at 48 hrs and it’s doing it again!
@@PABLOIZTAKEN it seems as long as the OEM pump is used the problem just comes back some hours later. Unfortunately. This really needs to be addressed by kawasaki. But for now the only fix that seems to hold the test of time is the quantum or all balls kit. So far so good on them with these new kawis
I have the exact same problem on my 2023 kx450 with less than 20 hrs on it. Starts fine cold but after one practice session it wont start. Guy at the track said needs valve adjustment. Ruined the day, got home and it fired right up cold. Checked my vin on Kawi site and it says mine isnt covered under the recall. Guess I got to buy a pump on a brand new bike.
Yes sir. Bummer they won't cover it. Hopefully the new OEM pumps have the recall addressed but if not I can say the all balls kit surely does the trick and is still going well on the bike in this video.
Hey guys! I am in Montreal and I have the same issue. I don't race, I am a beginner and I do not ride hard. Problem started at 18 hours. Bought the bike brand new kx250 2022. I brought it to the store where I bought it and they could not recreate the issue. The problem happened again obviously. I spoke to Kawasaki and now I need to bring it back again. Very disappointed. There are also many dudes I met at the track up here with the same issue.
Has anyone resolved the problem? Everyone says it is the fuel pump. Others have said they did a rebuild and it still happened.
Make sure you contact the store where you bought the bike and make sure you contact Kawasaki. This is not our fault. Let's stick together on this.
And thanks for making this video!! I sent it to Kawaski.
Thanks! Yeah the OEM pump will probably cause the same problem again in short time. For now the cure is using a all balls kit or a quantum kit. So far that has worked well on the KX
@@UpAllNight91 just ordered the all balls kit. I will keep everyone here up to date. Thanks again!
Yes sir and thanks in advance for any updates!

Right on!
My '17 Rmx450 Keihin fuel pump looks very similar in design with the screws to disassemble. Also my fuel pump has a low fuel sensor(thermistor) circuit also.
Yes it's probably very similar.
I got a 2022 kx250. First ever new bike. 9.6 hours on it. Second lap of the day I land off a jump and it sputtered out and died. I made sure I wasn't leaking anything turned it over and it fired up for a split second.
Ive now been messing with it for a week checking wires and stuff. I thought it was my fuel pump relay, I got told to check it and when I taped it against my subframe my fuel pump would start up. But I tried my friends relay and won't work.
I'm not getting spark. Last night messing around with it for hours I got two single sparks.
I'm not even sure what to do now I have to take it back to the dealership. And now I'm also worried about this happening in the future. Such a bummer on a new bike.....
And thanks so much for your videos. They're great! I'm always learning while watching.
So your having a fuel pump relay issue and also a spark issue at the same time? Did you try disconnecting the kill switch and see if that helps. I once had a kill switch that was going bad and it would kill the bike on jump landings
@@UpAllNight91 yeah I disconnected my kill switch, also tried a friends relay. I just dropped it off at the dealership because I was lost on what to do next
@@Quigs243 crap and bummer man. Hopefully they get it up and going quickly. If you don't mind letting me know what they find, could help me if I run into the same issue on one down the road.
@@UpAllNight91 yeah ill come back on this comment and let you know!
@@UpAllNight91 the dealership says it's my crank position sensor and that I have to replace my whole stator. They contacted Kawasaki for help on it due to such low hours and should hear back tmrw.
Enjoyed watching. A half-functioning fuel pump is odd. Curious to see if Kawasaki initiates a recall, or some kinda CDI update. I’m no professional mechanic, but given that the fuel pump functions minus a hot start is strange.
Thanks for watching! I agree. It is weird and I'm kinda expecting a recall soon too. The fuel pumps on back order so thats to be noticed and should be a red flag. Is it a fuel pump issue or ECU issue? They run and start up fine when new and later something changes. A new fuel pump seems to fix the issue. They surely gotta fix or change something
I just replaced the pump with a quantum rebuild kit and it fixed my SR too I don’t get it start cold won’t when hot????
@@dillonjewison596 so she's good now your saying?
@@UpAllNight91 yep got 3 hours on it since replacing the pump good as new

I have a 14 kx450, valves are good and it runs good when it’ finally starts but sometimes won’t start when cold and something it does then does the same when hot, sometimes it does then it doesn’t. Sometimes I just have to bump start the bike. Think it’s my fuel pump also ? I also put a new plug and coil
When was the last top end done? In the past on kick start 4 strokes that give random hot and cold hard starting i have found a fresh top end helps on them
@@UpAllNight91 I just put a new piston in it, plus the bike probably only has 30 hours on it.
Wouldn't hurt to check that the fuel pump holds pressure after power is removed from it. On a kick start bike it surely helps if the pump holds pressure between kicks
I got a 22 SR with 25 hours and the same thing happened to me thanks I’ll be changing the pump 👌🇺🇸
Man its crazy to hear other people are having this issue too at low hours. Yeah as for now a pump seems to be the fix. Thanks for watching

It happened to me. Thank you so much for the video. Runs great now.
Awesome! Thats good news!
Thanks for the info been struggling with this problem for 2 months

Hello buddy. I have the same problem one my bike kx250f 2023. I Change the fuel pump but the problem still!! Bike won’t starts hot but starts cold! It’s a brand new bike only has 10h 😢
Hello. Thats a bummer. I have heard there are some who have this issue still with the OEM pumps. If you replaced yours with a OEM pump then it wouldnt hurt to try a all balls or quantum fuel pump kit in one of your pumps and see if that helps. I do know the issue never came back on any of the bikes I put one of these kits in.
@@UpAllNight91 I already have an all balls pump but the problem continues
@@americandream3529 Ohh. Hmm. When it gets hot and doesnt want to start can you hear the fuel pump in the tank running while trying to start it? Or dues the pump go silent while cranking?
Nice diagnostic skills, just wish I had a dollar for each time you called the bike,,, her. Or she lol. Great job,
My 2017 kx450f (street legal) has this a couple times,, after riding up in the woods for an hour, I can feel a little bit of a misfire on acceleration and backfires out tail pipe on deceleration. I've owned it a couple years and it has always been a little hard to start cold but better when warmed up, i was kinda thinking valve adjustment or electrical (spark) I'm going to look at air temp. sn. Area. also wont to check valve adjustment, (I bought a shim kit) engine does seem a little noisey, rattlily. I am thinking about replacing timing chain at same time, I don't know how long before they stretch. I dont have an hour counter for this bike.
Hello. I would do the timing chain at the same time I do the top end. Checking the valve clearance never hurts though. The kx450 is kinda know to pop some on decel and yours might be normal
Same problem with my buddy's 2022 KX250X failed at 12hrs then replacement failed at almost exactly the same run time.
Oh man. What's going on!
Nice work Brother! Excellent diagnosis. I am due for a top end soon. Probably by end of the year.
Thanks man. Dade city soon I think if you want to get out for a ride
Yes sir. What day?
Should be the 31st. Last Sunday of every month
Had the same problem on my yz450f, I swapped out the the fuel filter and did a valve adjustment then she was back up running perfectly fine.
Hello. I think the fuel tanks get dirt in them when filling the tank with gas, we are often in a dirty environment out riding when we top off the tanks and our gas can thats been out with us getting dusted all day. I first most bikes have some sand on the bottom of the tank.
Agree on comments regarding valves.
Another great video!!! Were you ever able to verify what I said about Loc Tite brand thread locker? Thanks
Thanks. Yes I did, you was right. I wont be buying that brand anymore. That sucks on their part.
I bought a brand new 2022 brand new kx450 here in Australia, its old floor stock and i got it for so cheap. They said that they needed to do a fuel pump recall before they deliver the bike because I ordered it interstate. I wonder if kawasaki addressed this issue.
I believe they have. Thats what the recall was to address.
@@UpAllNight91 nice, really cant thank you enough for your content
Great video! I wonder if I should be looking to doing the same. I have a 2012 KX450f that only likes to start with like half throttle, runs a bit rough for about 30 seconds and then is completely fine. A bit hard to start after it is warm too. Tried a new condenser, new spark plug, valve clearances were good too along with compression.
Yeah. I would surely check the PSI reaches around 50psi and also make sure it holds its PSI with just a slow gradual drop when power is removed from the pump.
What would cause it to loose psi?
Many things can cause it to have low PSI. A worn and tired pump motor or a bad fuel pressure regulator. Another thing that comes to mind if you find everything good then try back flushing or replacing the fuel Injector. A weak or partially clogged Injector can cause your issues too.
Thanks for the video man
Yes Sir!
This is actually a recall. The repair not only requires a new fuel pump but also a replacement ECU.
Yes. It was finally recalled recently. However for a few years we was stuck trying to figure a fix ourselves. Which we did
What year bike is the recall for and model?
BTW SR is the (SPECIAL RACER) edition.
Right on
How’s the bike doing after the replacement? Still starting while hot?
So far she's been good. He rides her every weekend
This was an awesome video. I followed it to the T I rode for about an hour, took a break, and now the bike won't start and it's flashing the fuel pump malfunction code. Any suggestions?
I would pull the tank and put power to the pump to see if its working ok. If it is then check the connection between the bike and pump. Its gotta be one of them two things
@@UpAllNight91 that wasn't it I made a video and posted it on my channel but what happened was the ECU behind the front number plate slid down to where the wires were rubbing on the triple clamp, and it broke two wires in the wiring harness the rubber mount that holds the ECU in place broke, which allowed it to slide down onto the clamps
@@mikestrophytruck right on, good catch!
I have a 2023 kx250 with the opposite problems. It's hard starting from day 1 I bought it new. Once I get it running and warm, it starts right up. Could it be not enough pump pressure when trying to start from cold? Any information would be helpful. Thank you.
Dennis
That seems to be common with the newer KX450 and KX250. I have found sometimes the OEM battery is just weak. For a test try putting on a battery charger and if she fires right up then its just a weak battery. Also it helps to make sure the choke is on on the very first attempt of cold start. If the choke is forgotten and a start attempt is made then its a up hill battle lol
Was the bike showing any trouble codes? I have a 19 giving me issues when its hot as well
No trouble codes at all. Just wouldn't restart after it was hot
Hey bro my 15 kx450f was running sooo bad would only idle so I got a new fuel filter the old one was black with dirt all over it but now I can’t get it to run at all any ideas any info would be appreciated thanks
I would power up the pump with a 12 volts battery as you seen in the video. And check the PSI. Very seldom is it a fuel filter issue. Much more common is the pump or regulator thats gone out. So I would check with a 12 volt battery and a pressure gauge (can purchase at harbor freight for about 25 bucks)
Hey boss I just changed this part but it’s still doing it. What else could be the problem? If you can help me
When you say its still doing it. Do you mean its fine when the bike is first started up and will continue to run fine. But when its shut off it wont restart again untill you let it cool down some?
In the video, you mention that it is passing 12v to the starter. I'm having the same issue, but it doesn't start passing 12v until after I release the starter button. When holding down the starter button, it only passes 10V. Shouldn't it be 12v as soon as press the starter button?
Its normal to see it go down to 10 or so while the starter is cranking. That starter robs most of the batteries juice. I would say seeing 10v while cranking is normal
Just got the kit today and replaced it. Used your video to guide me and it fires up hot now Many thanks!
Thanks for another great video. 👍
Thanks man. Appreciate it!
Just purchased a 2022 kxf450, first ride sweet, till parked up try to start after no go. Later would start cold then once hot & stopped won't start, so ordered new pump kit so seems a common kawasaki fault that Kawasaki should recall there shoddy pumps & clear there name.

Oh man, they are all hot lol. 450s run hot. But yeah the KX450 is kinda a narrow bike for sure.
BTW, they did end up doing a recall on that fuel pump. This video was made before the recall came out.
My 2022 with 14.6 hours is having issues with cold starts. It was running fine and then all of a sudden I can’t start it cold if my life depended on it. It cranks and cranks and cranks and then the battery gets hot and then powers down and then once the battery cools, I tried again and it just cranks and cranks. Do you think it might be the fuel pump?
Hello. I would start by first charging the battery. I had a 23 here a few days ago with 8 hours on it and it was doing the exact same thing. I charged the battery, turned the choke on and gave it zero throttle and it finally fired right up. I would try that first. on a bike as young as this.
@@UpAllNight91 thanks for the reply! It’s going in to the dealer Wednesday, but oddly enough, it started on the second try this morning about 15 minutes ago. The bike sits on a battery tender when it’s not being ridden. I’ll ask him to check the battery as well.
@@UpAllNight91 they are going to replace the fuel pump because mine supposedly is one of the ones affected per the recall. So I am having this exact issue with my ‘23 KX250. I only have 5 hours on the bike. As I’m researching the issue, I see that there was an official recall at some point but when I enter my VIN on Kawi’s site it doesn’t appear that I’m part of the recall. If I purchase a new oem fuel pump, does anyone know if the faulty issue is fixed now? Also, I’ve seen talk about ECU update does anyone have info on that?
Hello. They did update the pump to fix the issue. So if you buy a new pump it should be the updated pump. I am not sure about the ECU update though.
You know it would have been really easy to test and see if that thing was drawing too much amperage, just put an amp clamp on it and kick it a few times and see how many amps it's pulling.Look it up and see how many amps a new motor usually pulls and see what yours is pulling. If it's pulling too much then you know the pumps bad.... Another good way of testing an electric motor is just ohming it out.Seeing how many ohms you have across the windings? There should be somewhere in the literature for that pump. How many ohms it should be pulling across the windings? And if it's drawing more or less than it's supposed too then it is probably bad....

I would start by checking the pump. Make sure its producing good fuel pressure. If thats good then try back flushing the injector.
My kx250 22 on a cold start is cranking like 2 times starts up for like half a second, turns off and just can’t start maybe after 3 tries of cranking it over and over again it fires up but sometimes and idk what it can be
Oh and also I already checked the valves and they are in spec, also the fuel pump I think is ok because I hear the sound
Hello. Is the trouble code light or check engine light blinking while the bike is running? Any trouble codes? Also I would pull the tank and check that the fuel pump builds pressure fast and holds pressure well.
You sound strikingly similar to another UA-cam small engine mechanic.
Update! My bike works great! After doing the fuel pump rebuild which did not work, I got the bike checked out by David at Dspec in Montreal. He figured it out, there was a misplaced o ring. I know you didn't recommend the kit but that kit has really bad reviews.
I'm sure there is. In my experience. Many people bring me fuel pumps that they tried to put a kit in and they got it wrong. I correct it and they go off fine. And I have put that kit in probably 20 bikes now myself and pretty much all of them are doing good to date. However if you read the comments here, some have bought the OEM pump for 400 bucks just for the problem to come back a handful of hours later. I'm actually doing a 21 kx250f this week with the same pump and same issue. All the all balls kits for this bike are now sold out. So I will be trying out a quantum kit for this bike, hopefully that one does as well as the all balls has been doing for these bikes. Kawi really needs to recall these though. As you know i prefer OEM pumps, but at 400 bucks and with the word being it can or will happen again, these kits seem to be a decent fix for the time being. Not the best way to fix it but for now the only way (that seems to stand the test of time)

ua-cam.com/users/shortss1TuHs4sYUw
It could be. When its cold and able to start, remove the gas cap and hit the start button super fast, not long enough to start but long enough to cycle on the fuel pump. Stick your ear up to the gas cap opening and get familiar with how the fuel pump sounds. Then ride the bike on flat ground where it's safe when it dies. As soon as it dies remove the gas cap again and hit the start button super fast again, not enough to start just enough to cycle the fuel pump and listen inside the tank again. If you don't hear the pump then yes it could be your pump giving up when it gets hot. Maybe start there
@@UpAllNight91 thanks for the reply man!
So I can hear the fuel pump without the gas cap, but still doesn’t want to start. There is spark and the battery is full. I haven’t done the riding and then listening but will give it a go. The problem is very intermittent, it happens and then it doesn’t happen. Could it possibly be water in the fuel? I haven’t drained the tank yet. I’m stripping everything today again to see if I can find something. I’ve read quite abit about the MAP sensor failing because of water or oil getting in there. I do spray the motor with yamashield or WD40 after every ride as I live close to the ocean and want to prevent corrosion.
@@kyleallen146 yeah the map sensor can surely cause issues.
