      As a game dev myself, you have to learn a lot before you make anything that an average person can enjoy. You might have a long way to go, but it’s good that you recognize you are still learning and you should keep your creative spirit going forward. This game may not be successful but you have to fail many times before you can succeed.

  • @descuddlebat
    @descuddlebat 10 місяців тому +29

    Re: diagonal movement, it's almost definitely because the game just adds up forward and sideways speed, say:
    * Holding forward makes you move at 4m/s forward
    * Holding right makes you move at 3m/s right
    If you just add these up, the resulting vector is sqrt(4^2 + 3^2) = 5m/s diagonally (by Pythagorean theorem)

    I do think the concept of 'other players' is super interesting. Like, all it is, is other NPCs whose purpose is to be like the human player. I mean we play all sorts of single-player games without any protagonist existing besides ourselves...kind of interesting if you think about it like that. Just another class of NPC. Add in a good AI and maybe you could even add group questing, information sharing, etc. The information sharing idea is also very interesting to me, because you could talk with other characters to learn really niche stuff, rather than taking to the internet. Idk if any of this would be good for gaming haha, but it's just interesting to think about.

  • @GooTheMighty
    @GooTheMighty 10 місяців тому +22

    I think the only way that a game like this would work and be a lot of fun is if the npc “players” used really REALLY robust text parsers for their dialogue, so that they could walk you through the whole game if you ask. Divide that up over a few archetypes (like PVMgod69, SkillerQueen420, QuestFenatic93, and GarryGilbertOG), with each having access to only pieces of the total parser, and I think it could feel fairly real and engaging to play. Sprinkle some personality on top, like personality based barks and some players that are just antagonistic to the point of being villainous, or only ever use one word responses and ignore you, and you’d have a real-fake MMO. A bit of randomization and a lot of tracking under the hood could mean no two players ever encounter the same “players” in the same place too.

    You run faster diagonally because the dev needs to normalize the direction input vector
    If you hold W the input is (0,1), and if you hold D its (1,0) but if you hold both it should be something like (0.707,0.707), but because he didn't normalize it, the input is (1,1)

    • @SirPrimrose
      @SirPrimrose 10 місяців тому

      Yeah, the movement controller isn’t normalized. Both directional inputs are independent, so you can move at full speed in two directions at once, instead of sacrificing speed going “forward” to move “right” at the same time.

    EDIT: by the way, the double movespeed on diagonal is cause if you don't do any checks, standard movement systems would just add speed in the direction you press, so going diagonal is going 2 directions at once, basically, so it adds both speeds to your character.

  • @damonfedorick

  • @stevennorton8960
    @stevennorton8960 9 місяців тому

    Oh, if this was made in unity I understand why the diagonal speed is increased. Scripting movement in 4 directions works as intended because the input is 1.0 in each direction. So a vector line would move up to 1.0, left 1.0 ect. but only on the x-direction or y-direction
    However, if you move diagonally, the vector line is longer because on a graph, x = 1.0, y =1.0 (you have both an x-direction and a y-direction simultaneously) you draw a line from 0,0 to the points mentioned, but the math (a^2 +b^2 = c^2) would equal something like 1.4 so you move at that multiplier of speed. In unity, one method is to script the "normalize" property to fix it.
    Hopefully that makes sense.

    You saw things the wrong way, this is very very wrong. You start with a skill book and you said you didnt have any skills, the point of the words being highlighted is because you can either answer by typing what you want, or you can just click on it. The game is a demo, sure its not an alpha but the game is getting updates and getting better and better. The streams showing the post demo content by the testers is amazing and exciting for more content to come. You said you killed plaxitheris and didnt get the key, but you should have gotten the mold if you really killed it, with the mold you can fix the key, a great introduction to the smithing system. Apparently you didnt play on the current update so this wasnt available for you, but theres an npc who straight up tells you she can fix the key. Sure the game is rough around the edges, but its not near as bad as you describe it. You are right about the sim players tho, but burgee has been clear on that topic, saying they will be better.

    My biggest problem with MMOs have always been the other players. "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." is a curse that affects MMORPGs particularly badly; every time I just want to play some MMO I'm met with people obsessed with minmaxing and following guides to take the optimised leveling paths and make meta cookiecutter builds. And they expect the same from you, grouping up to earlier take on higher level challenges that are possible only with those optimised paths, or completely ignore vast swathes of content because it's not optimal. And don't even get me started on guilds and PvP. Even if I like the game, I find myself feeling out of place, playing mostly solo with an experience that is worse than if I just actually played solo.
    That's why I like the idea of Erenshor, and am interested in the game. Bots aren't programmed to be sweaty meta slaves, but to enrich the player's experience, whatever they want it to be.

    Delighted that the President of MMORPGs took time out of his busy schedule to post this video! I will edit this comment later with whatever wacky thing he says at the end (unless I forget in which case whoopsies enjoy my unedited remarks)

    Got a demo of ff12 with dragon quest 8 back when ps2 was the hot shit, had so much fun in that demo, ff12 was the next game I saved for. Lot of advertising power in a short, polished demo.

    Alright, so I find it weird that .hack wasn't mentioned once and urge you to try it? The whole Idea is to try and make an MMO and then make it entirely single-player.
    it's just that other players have a whole anime-esque plot over multiple charpers of the game that can't even be called expansions, the players are essentially the same thing as characters in an SP game instead that "emulates" player behaviour about as well as that thing you're playing, and the gameplay is... I don't know, somewhat fun? I remember liking it back in the day.

    In my opinion a few games have tried the single player mmo feeling .hack being the earliest i can remember, then theres the SAO games, crosscode and i guess one of the goat sim too, forget which, sure all these..maybe apart from goatsim, has its own story but its laid out in a mmo format, its flaws as well sadly.

    Who here remembers the .hack// games? Good example of a fake MMORPG that's super fun. Was sad they never had a real MMO outside of Fragment which never took off.

    I really want NPC's with chatbot ai. There's videos of people making bots that play RS and talk to people like normal players. Something like that would be awesome in any of the major mmos.

    You know, if you skip all cutscenes and recruit random NPCs to your party in Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, it actually feels like a single-player MMO. Just ignore the fact that the AI is brain dead and that the parties you see out in the word seem to be mentally stuck in the game's download process, not even the tutorial area. That's pretty much how I play SAOHR and despite its many shortcomings, it does scratch that MMO itch every now and again. It emulates an MMO environment well enough. It's a shame that Fatal Bullet, the best SAO game, dropped the ball hard on the MMO emulation department.

    5:08 Naah it's what Solid Snake does. "Nano machines?" "Psycho mantis?"
    Also Final Fantasy does the "type out this thing physically" a bunch. And yea it's a little annoying; especially for console players I imagine. A lot of this design seems to be copying EverQuest
    I was gonna explain diagonal movement but someone else did a far better job than me. Unnormalized vectors.. thats what it is.

    I do kinda want an 'offline' mmo tbh, I played this freeware game some time back called Elona (and now they have a mobile version which is kinda cool, ig.) And there are npc heros thare are doing their own things out in the world. You get random popups when one of these npcs gets a legendary item or whatever, it was cool. Elona is still a great game tbh. Highly recommend if you're a schizo who stares at Shena's ass too much.

    Great video! This game looks boring lmao, but I'm glad you played it for me. I don't think a fake MMO is something I'd ever be able to get into. Maybe if it was built with a lot of polish, AI companions, and like, quests/raids you HAD to do with AI partners, even though it's a single player game? Maybe then it could be fun experiment? But nobody's gonna chase that dream, and I don't think there would be a playerbase for it regardless.

    Are you sure you do run twice as fast, and not say 1.41421356 times as fast ? In the later case, the explanation is quite trivial. It's still a newbie programming mistake but well. If it is indeed twice as fast, then it is quite puzling.

    I've seen better fake multiplayer rpg games already 20 years ago.. this is not new concept and it's awfully made, simple as that.
    One of the very first methods of controlling RPG games was text based, and the dialogue in those was thousand times better than this and way more responsive
