Do Star Jasmine Cuttings Root in Water? (络石藤/风车茉莉可以水培繁殖吗?)

  • Star Jasmine is a popular evergreen vine plant with fragrant star-shaped white flowers. In this video I designed a experiment to test whether we can propagate Star Jasmine just by sticking Star Jasmine cuttings into the plain tap water. Three different Star Jasmine cuttings including brown color semi-hardwood, greenish softwood and green tip cuttings were tested for comparison. Weekly report and observation, and final conclusions can be found in this episode for your reference. Thanks for any comments and suggestions! Happy gardening and happy rooting!
    Update: this video showed the rooting results from 8 weeks, after that I still put the cuttings in the glass bottle with water, later roots grow more fast and longer. So you might be very very patient and wait for longer to get very decent roots. Remember the roots growing from water is very weak and fragile. I would NOT recommend you to propagate star jasmine using cutting in water. Air layering is a good way but special technique might be required. Based on my experiences, ground layering is the beast way to propagate star jasmine, you can definitely see root formation in one month. Roots from ground layering is very decent, very easy to survive when transplanted into pot. Check out my youTube link.

      @@tammybordelon5466 Sorry I also think the video is too long. Rooting Star Jasmine in the water is kind of not a good way, it takes so long and root very slowly especially during the early stage. Hopefully these detailed information might be helpful for those people who are interested in giving a try later. Thanks.

    I'm going to start doing this every time I prune mine. First because I'll be able to make my house smell nicer while they root, and second because star jasmine seedlings are pretty expensive but low-maintenance, clones would make nice gifts for people who don't have dirt under their fingernails all the time. And their scent is basically universally loved, both true jasmines and star.

      Hi, Blork, thank you for sharing your story with me and explain why you like star jasmine. To be honest, I agree with you that this plant is pretty expensive but low maintenance. Actually, on my UA-cam channel, I once propagated this plant using different ways, all works on my hands. But personally I prefer ground layering technique to grow star jasmine because it consistently give me pretty good results. Just around 2 months ago, I set up another new experiment to clone star jasmine, the results are pretty good. You can check out the picture in COMMUNITY on my UA-cam channel. I will post my new video regarding this experiment soon. Please check it out later. BTW, when you are trying clone star jasmine in water, I think you'd better keep the cuttings moist because summer is coming, the high temperature will easily let them dry out quickly. Anyway thanks a lot for your comments. Good luck with your plant growth.

    I have found that after choosing the appropriate sections you want to propagate, cutting the leaves perpendicularly (cut the tips off), actually encourages these plants to root quicker. This also works with rubber trees.

      Hi, missbeans, good to hear you are going to propagate your pink jasmine using different ways, I can not wait to know what results you can get. Please update me later whatever result you can get. Good luck and happy gardening!
      BTW, first time to hear of Pink Jasmine, just googled it, based on the website pictures, flower buds look pink, but flower is still white star shape. Interesting, just like some lemon tree flowers (flower buds look pink/light lavender, but flowers are still white). it is very unique (not as common as star jasmine) and a beautiful flowering plant.

      @@LAyangfamily you should grow some! It's an amazing jasmine although it does get very big. It blooms in late winter/early spring and has a wonderful sweet scent that fills the air. @@missbeans Hi, thanks, that sounds interesting, just as I mentioned, here in LA kind of I only see star Jasmine in our neighborhood, I seldom see pink jasmine, maybe I did not pay attention. But good to know that. Actually Santa Barbara County is not far away from LA, I have been there at least two times, it is beautiful with a lot of Spanish style buildings.
      One thing I want to mention is that I did not know what's the difference between two jasmines. Just in case you might want to try ground layering to propagate pink jasmine, because ground layering is a easy and effective way to propagate star jasmine. I once easily and successfully propagate many star jasmine. You can check out the following video for more details. Good luck.

    My mothet use to start many different kinds of plants by this method, I tried doing this with oleandors the roots came out by many but once I tried to set them into soil the roots just broke off being they are fragile I guess maybe was the way I tried to putthem into the soil?

    • @LAyangfamily
      @LAyangfamily  3 роки тому +1

      You are right, generally speaking, you can grow many different types of plants just soaking the branches in the water, even though they grow very decent roots, but it is still a challenge when you transplant them to the pot with soil. Because the toots are too fragile and sometimes easy to rot. You can check out my channel playlist for other better ways to grow star Jasmine. Thanks.

      Thanks for your comments. Actually, you just asked an interesting question. There are some many different plants which are simply called jasmine. For Jasmine tea, some different jasmine plants such as common jasmine, and pink jasmine can be used to make jasmine tea. But Star jasmine can NOT be used for jasmine tea since it is slightly toxic even though it is widely planted in the garden and does give a very fragrant smell. Actually I just did some website search before I answer your question. Again thanks for watching.

      Haha, you are special 🤣, what I mean is a lot of people want to grow a lot of Star Jasmine to create privacy trellises. I think it is pretty easy. In our complex, all the star jasmine are maintained as bush, but not climbing. So you just need to not provide any support like trellis or fence to let them spread. Another thing you need prune your plants like runners to train them to shape what you like.

Star Jasmine is aggressive and easy to spread. Check out my channel Star Jasmine playlist to find out which way you want to choose to propagate. Good luck.
