Volcano Watch 2023: Waiting On An Eruption
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- Since July 5, 2023, the Reykjanes peninsula has experienced a swarm of more than 4,700 earthquakes, with the strongest one registering a magnitude of 4.8. Volcanologists are speculating that the next eruption could occur within a few hours or days.
To better understand the situation, The Reykjavík Grapevine took a trip to the lava field near Fagradalsfjall, where eruptions occurred in 2021 and 2022. Joining us on this journey is Ragnhildur ‘Ragga’ Ágústsdóttir, a lava ambassador and co-founder of Lava Show.
Learn more about lava and observe the raw power and beauty of nature as we await the the next volcanic event.

That was quite nice, good information, but I really miss Valur and Polly…
Valur come back at least for the first video then the eruption begin ! Nice replacement btw
1st thing worth watching on Grapevine since Valur left.
Am back watching a GV video! Haven't watched a single one since Valur and Polly's last one. I still miss them. When he was forced to leave GV I felt like I had lost a friend. I will never be able to visit Iceland, but through Valur I felt like I did a couple of times a week and looked forward to the videos he made. He was a true Icelander and his love for his native country showed in his videos. I also miss the humor and his playing with Polly, Well I'm back watching... for volcano news... don't know about afterwards. I hesitate to invest my time getting attached to any of your presenters again. I must admit this was an excellent program on the apparent imminent eruption by someone very knowledgeable on the subject.
Yes. Spot on. I agree!
I feel the same. Seriously miss those two.
I'm with you on that 👍😪. I haven't watched a single thing since they were unceremoniously bumped, well, apart from this 😊
Happy to report that Polly and Valur were as lovely In person as they were on RG. It was a privilege to meet them on what may have been their last little tour.
I have to admit I miss Valur and Polly. That said replacing him with a person who’s very knowledgeable about Icelandic volcanoes was a great choice. I very much look forward to Ragnhildur’s future reports on this topic.
Ragnhildur did a great job, but I do miss seeing Valur and Polly.
Absolutely yes; Very nice video report! I like videos like this, in which, like now, it is explained in a memorable way how something specific works, such as "what is an intrusion, what is a dyke, what is a mantle plume" etc. More are welcome Videos follow that explain certain processes in the geology and nature of Iceland. If it were up to me, explanatory videos could be longer :) But I know that long texts are not for everyone.
Me too.
Polly was definitely a fun addition! Perhaps our new host needs to adopt one. LOL I very much enjoyed listening today!
Yes, I wonder what our little team is doing now. Sad we won't be hearing from Valur, Art and Ms Polly 😪
Came to say the same. Miss Valur
Good job, I miss Valur and Polly tho. But you do great.
Great episode and host. Would love to see more content again! Missing Valur & Polly
More videos please❤
I have to agree with the comments here. Missing Valur and Polly greatly, but a nice report nonetheless! Awaiting the next "tourist" eruption and the Reykjavik Grapevine coverage. I have friends visiting the area in a week or so and I am jealous of their timing. I have been there twice, but not seen an active eruption. Cheers!
Nice Job like Valur in 2021 and 2022 !!! Hope Valur and Polly have an nice time in the meantime ! Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪
oh gosh, i miss watching reykjavik grapevine news every other day. i miss valur, polly and josie and everyone and everything else. i miss learning about iceland, even though i've no connection to iceland in any means. i've even never been there and possibly never will be. these about 20 minutes every couple of days were somehow soothing and i loved it. please bring it back! yes, i know, valur moved on, i fully understand this and i'm not asking to bring him and polly back, just having grapevine news every other day would do. i realized that by watching this video. it felt like a new season of a beloved tv series, but with different actors. it's not what it used to be, but it's still what i would love to watch and desperately miss.
Great video but Polly is missing...
And Valur! 😢
This felt like the older days of the channel. A warm blanket.
Ragnhildur did a great job (loved her paper analogy) but...I miss seeing Valur and Polly. They were a huge part of pandemic isolation what with Bob and all. What a guy, what a dog! I hope Ragna stays awhile, I'd like to get used to her.
Good to hear from the Grapevine again. An interesting and informative report. I very much miss the regular news of Iceland (and it’s volcanic activities) from Valur and his associates. Unfortunately he hasn’t reappeared on social media. His presence would be welcomed by many
He went to work at the largest TV broadcaster as a reporter
I miss Valur and Polly but bringing in the self-assured Co-Founder of the Lava Show (it was in repair from a fire the week we were there last September) as the new MC is a master-stroke and the terrain info graphics are just as slick and helpful as ever. A winner debut for what will undoubtedly be another must-see YT series.
Excellent replacement for Valur and educational about Iceland. Keep producing these Grapevine and you will revitalize this channel.
Not questionning the replacement, but where is Valur now?
@@LakeShadow He made some videos at the time of his departure from the Grapevine which you can still find online somewhere, no doubt
I don't think I could say "replacement," but successor. Great video & information.
I still miss Valur & Polly! ( the best Moral Officer! ) Started watching RG & Valur's excellent coverage in the days prior to the exciting 2021 eruption & continued until Valur announced he was leaving ! I hope they are doing well whatever that is !
@@LakeShadowhe works for RUV.
me too ,ive been watching since Bob first Erupted
me too! I was watching 2 channels before Bob erupted, about a week or 2 I think because of all the earthquakes they were having. Im so glad we will more than likely get to see this one start.
Greetings fellow Boblings !!! 😊
Excellent explanation. Looking forward to seeing another spectacular “tourist” eruption. Hopefully, Katla stays calm.
Nice to see this format again. I liked the style of Valur an now I really appreciate the style of Ragnhildu. Thanks ofr the explanaitions and the great pictures,. Greetings from the Eifel in Germany.
one day ... in the future ... there will be another eruption in your locality, but the chances are not for a many many years!
Great video Ragnhildur - and a fantastic, accessible explanation of the local geology. You might be the first person to point out that there are two major magma sources in Iceland and that the volcanoes of Reykjanes are separate from the monsters in the south and east of the country. And a terrific explanation of how a single dyke, rather than a magma chamber is feeding this volcano.
I'll have to check out The Lava Show next time I'm in Reykjavík - hopefully not too long in the future.
After what the RG did to Valur and Polly, we are very hesitant about trusting you all again. Valur had such an excellent style, and having Polly too, along with his chats with Art made for a very homey, cosy, friendly environment that made us all come back again and again. We loved it, You were bloody idiots to get rid of him.
However, that’s not this presenter’s fault. So we’ll give it a go. But we’ll always now be wary of getting attached to your channel again because you badly let us all down last time. We missed the old channel style so much, we still miss hearing all about Iceland regularly, the good and bad, the serious and the playful. You threw away a gem there. Muppets 🤦🏻♀️
So we’ve no idea about this now. It was a good episode, interesting and informative. But not the same. It didn’t have the magic and human touch that first captured our attention and made us come back over and over again. How can we trust you? Is this just for the coming eruption now? What will you do? What are your plans? Are you sticking with this and keeping going? Or will you just abandon this again if the eruption isn’t as big as you’re hoping? (Small chance of that I know, something big is coming…)
Basically, we’re still bitter about what you did to Valur (and Polly) and we don’t feel like you’ve really explained or apologised or given us any reason to invest our time and care in you again.
Who knows. Maybe. We love Iceland, but we’ve lost that connection now. What about the politics and economy and food and crime and immigration and things? With Valur, we got the whole Iceland story without a corporate filter. This just feels like you’re picking the cherry off the top of the cake and getting on that eruption bandwagon…temporarily…while it makes you money… It always felt like it was greed that came in with the new ownership, greed and a change of priority. And that priority wasn’t the truth. Valur gave us the truth about Iceland, honestly and openly and allowed us to judge for ourselves. But the new ownership didn’t like that he talked to us about politics and things as well… Now why was that?
Nothing good came of Valur’s leaving. You utter idiots.
The last episode with Valur came up at the end, the one where he told us he was leaving. Heartbreaking 💔
Just our opinions.
Ragnhildur did a great job here! This was fun to watch. Exciting times for volcano enthusiasts! I was lucky to have visited the first Fagradalsfjall volcano back in 2021 the day after it erupted. I've never experienced anything more mindblowing in my life. 🤯
Wow, you've excellent timing, please let me know if & when eruption #3 will begin, oh Lava Guru. 🌋🧞♂️🌋
You're a natural Ragnhildur! An interesting and informative report, given in a warm and pleasing style. More please 🙂
Good video.
Well presented and informative.
Some of the best production quality out there.
Just seems to be missing something.
Yes. Polly. And Valur.
...though Valur is gone I still enjoy the Reykjavik Grapevine and love the people and country of Iceland.
✌️&❤️
Nice to see The Grapevine again! Looking forward to learning more! Thanks Ragga!
Thank you for being back and covering the phenomenal spectacle again 🙏
Great photography and super drone videos - it was like looking at an old friend again. Do we have Art on camera? Kudos to the knowledge of the presenter who is excellent. That little shake at the end was classic. I watched every video of both eruptions and stayed for all the other general news videos due to all the presenters but especially Valur and Chief Moral Officer Polly. Miss seeing them. Having said that I have fingers crossed that we see some lava flowing.
Great that The Reykjavik Grapevine is back ! Serious education can be welcome sometimes, when I want to know more. But I prefer Valur and Polly and Art, who walk through the world with curiosity and in awe... and invite me to walk with them and look around in Iceland without a hint of belittering . I hope they will be back soon !
Such a great explanation... and storytelling that takes you there... thank you... stay safe!!
Thumbs up for Ragnhildur. Very clear explanation of what is going on. Loved the Lava Show when I was there in May.
Ragnhildur did a great job, she showed where the eruption would come.
I'm looking forward to watching this next phase of activity.
Very good show with some of the same informality of that with Valur but also more science background. I will certainly come back for more, particularly if/when there is an eruption.
Thanks Ragnhildur - It feels like the "old days" of the videos - :)
Great and well based information! Thank you very much!
For the first time since Valur left I really appreciate a grapevine vid. Please keep such presentations coming - I 'm looking forward to them. Greetings from southern Germany
I sure miss Valur and Polly!! :(....BUT she is very pleasant
We have been to Lava Show in Vík. It was a wonderful educational experience. I highly recommend. ❤
Fantastic presentation of information by Ragnhildur, bringing back the best of the Valur day videos. Keep up this great work!
I’m so happy to hear a voice from the grapevine and to have a very pleasant and knowledgeable person please keep up the great work 😊
I’ve missed this sort of broadcast! Great job!
So glad to see the channel back and what a great ending! Thanks!
Very well explained and presented video. Fingers crossed for another spectacular and safe show from the awesome Icelandic nature.
Excellent presentation! I love your enthusiasm! Thank you.
EXCELLENT videos. Not only for the visuals but for your mastery of the subject.
As a NZer its great to hear them as its not often you sit right on top of where it could break through
Thank you for the visuals during your informative walk.
Love watching your videos!! Thank you!!
Thank you for the update.. Great information and I'm looking forward to following this.. Be safe everyone
Thanks, Ragga!
Art is back on the Lavafields again...
Having made the hike there 8 times in 2021, your graphics are fantastic and really show the layout of the eruption zones well.
I missed you Grapevine. Hello Ragnhildur, Its nice to see and hear from someone very knowledgeable on my favourite subject , I promise i will be watching avidly for your next broadcasts about the state of play.
Please pass on my regards to Valur and Polly, I do miss that famous double act and we do need some input from the chief of moral officer just now
Outstanding job! Greetings from Brazil
really good summary of recent and imminent eruptions, thank you.
Welcome back! We'll definitely be watching you all closely. Thanks for an excellent video!
Very nice presentation, thank you. I was just starting to look for vids on this new activity.
Excellent update and a great presenter.
Thank you
The camera, excellent, as always
I should invite Ragga to come give a lecture in my Icelandic nature course ;)
bring back Valur and Polly.
This was a fantastic video! I like how the volcano - in development - obliged and made its cameo at the end of the video! LOL
Here we go again!!! So interesting the last time there was eruptions. ❤😊
Thank you for showing us where the next one will possibly erupt😊
What a great video. Thank you!
Great information, thank you. It's very exciting. I'll see you in Vik soon.
I also miss Valur and Polly... Thanks, Ragnhidur, for the clear description of Iceland's geology, and of what may be happening now.
Fingers crossed that the next eruption is photogenic - and that it doesn't cause problems for the Icelandic people.
Excellent video. Things are very well explained. Thank you.
Oh, I see, production quality has gone up. I like what I see, especially the overview putting everything into sight from Reykjavik to the 2021 eruption and "RagNar"s crater. (For those unaware: "The internet" named the 7 cones at some point, but most are buried now.)
Thank you
i miss these! Glad to see simular educational videos just like Valur use to do! Brings back memories during covid binging the episodes haha!
Thank you, I watched with great interest the various shows the last times they erupted, so I shall be following closely 🇬🇧
I miss Valur and Polly, too. He made everything very human!
Great explanation of details about what is going on with these earthquakes and intrusion of magma. The area seems to becoming active again.
Good show!
Where's Valur and Polly!??? 😪
Miss Valur and Polly.
Such an excellent new host
So cool that it might come up yet again. Hope you'll cover the new eruption, if it happens!
It will be for a long time as it entered an active period of phase for years to come until it goes to sleep again for many more
I found this video interesting and relatable, I was in Iceland in October 2019 and drove as a day trip to the black sand beach, just ran out of time to visit Lava Show in Vik. However, I have mixed feelings for Grapvine. Since the first eruption I watched avidly then suddenly the channel closed, and the reporter disappeared from my screen. This channel was a great source of information, some truly spectacular broadcasts from the lava fields as well as about life in Iceland. Coming out of lockdown it almost became a friend to check in with. The lady gave a good account of the situation, there are other channels out there too, I will judge by what is broadcast over the coming weeks.
Nice, thanks for the update.
I was wondering with the frequency of earthquakes if you would feel one while you were there! Neat!
Lovely to see Ragnhildur presenting this 😊
Great technical reporting, helpful graphics to maintain orientation.
Welcome back!
Looking forward to more!
What's not to be excited about the power of nature and volcanism? Thank you for this talk and tour. I definitely share your enthusiasm. Looking forward to the upcoming activity and your excellent coverage.
What a well made video! 😃
Thank you for this update. Very interesting and clearly described! I am looking forward to follow the development.
Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪
Can’t wait to see what happens soon
I've been fascinated with volcanoes, since 2003. Thank you for the information.
Hello Ragga,
Thank you for this video and information. I wil follow what will happen. You dit a great job but I miss Valur and Polly.
I am an Iceland fan after visiting last March
Great that we can rely on some quality info here! I also miss Valur and Polly, couldn't they do a special sometime, pleeease?
I went to the Lava show earlier this year, it is superb.
Looking forward to seeing what you post!😊
Welcome nack, I am a big Iceland fan. I have been in Iceland five times till 2015. Hope to see beautiful pictures again!
Oh it’s getting interesting. Great presentation by the way
That earthquake at the end was cool! wow! ...
I was in Myvatn during the Krafla Fires (quiet bit, dammit). The only warning notice was an A4 sheet of paper stapled to a board. "We expect this to erupt without warning. Do what you like, but don't expect any help". Went back a few years ago and there are barriers and "slippery when wet" signs everywhere. I guess some tourists lacked common sense...
Thanks, you gave very clear and informative info on volcanoes.
This is very informative AND I really miss Valur and Polly. Still.
Thank you very much for the explanation and information. Greetings from Turkey. I follow the environment from the cameras.
