  • Since July 5, 2023, the Reykjanes peninsula has experienced a swarm of more than 4,700 earthquakes, with the strongest one registering a magnitude of 4.8. Volcanologists are speculating that the next eruption could occur within a few hours or days.
To better understand the situation, The Reykjavík Grapevine took a trip to the lava field near Fagradalsfjall, where eruptions occurred in 2021 and 2022. Joining us on this journey is Ragnhildur ‘Ragga’ Ágústsdóttir, a lava ambassador and co-founder of Lava Show.
Learn more about lava and observe the raw power and beauty of nature as we await the the next volcanic event.

Am back watching a GV video! Haven't watched a single one since Valur and Polly's last one. I still miss them. When he was forced to leave GV I felt like I had lost a friend. I will never be able to visit Iceland, but through Valur I felt like I did a couple of times a week and looked forward to the videos he made. He was a true Icelander and his love for his native country showed in his videos. I also miss the humor and his playing with Polly, Well I'm back watching... for volcano news... don't know about afterwards. I hesitate to invest my time getting attached to any of your presenters again. I must admit this was an excellent program on the apparent imminent eruption by someone very knowledgeable on the subject.

Absolutely yes; Very nice video report! I like videos like this, in which, like now, it is explained in a memorable way how something specific works, such as "what is an intrusion, what is a dyke, what is a mantle plume" etc. More are welcome Videos follow that explain certain processes in the geology and nature of Iceland. If it were up to me, explanatory videos could be longer :) But I know that long texts are not for everyone.

oh gosh, i miss watching reykjavik grapevine news every other day. i miss valur, polly and josie and everyone and everything else. i miss learning about iceland, even though i've no connection to iceland in any means. i've even never been there and possibly never will be. these about 20 minutes every couple of days were somehow soothing and i loved it. please bring it back! yes, i know, valur moved on, i fully understand this and i'm not asking to bring him and polly back, just having grapevine news every other day would do. i realized that by watching this video. it felt like a new season of a beloved tv series, but with different actors. it's not what it used to be, but it's still what i would love to watch and desperately miss.

Great video Ragnhildur - and a fantastic, accessible explanation of the local geology. You might be the first person to point out that there are two major magma sources in Iceland and that the volcanoes of Reykjanes are separate from the monsters in the south and east of the country. And a terrific explanation of how a single dyke, rather than a magma chamber is feeding this volcano.
I'll have to check out The Lava Show next time I'm in Reykjavík - hopefully not too long in the future.

  • @bramsrockhopper3377

After what the RG did to Valur and Polly, we are very hesitant about trusting you all again. Valur had such an excellent style, and having Polly too, along with his chats with Art made for a very homey, cosy, friendly environment that made us all come back again and again. We loved it, You were bloody idiots to get rid of him.
However, that’s not this presenter’s fault. So we’ll give it a go. But we’ll always now be wary of getting attached to your channel again because you badly let us all down last time. We missed the old channel style so much, we still miss hearing all about Iceland regularly, the good and bad, the serious and the playful. You threw away a gem there. Muppets 🤦🏻‍♀️
So we’ve no idea about this now. It was a good episode, interesting and informative. But not the same. It didn’t have the magic and human touch that first captured our attention and made us come back over and over again. How can we trust you? Is this just for the coming eruption now? What will you do? What are your plans? Are you sticking with this and keeping going? Or will you just abandon this again if the eruption isn’t as big as you’re hoping? (Small chance of that I know, something big is coming…)
Basically, we’re still bitter about what you did to Valur (and Polly) and we don’t feel like you’ve really explained or apologised or given us any reason to invest our time and care in you again.
Who knows. Maybe. We love Iceland, but we’ve lost that connection now. What about the politics and economy and food and crime and immigration and things? With Valur, we got the whole Iceland story without a corporate filter. This just feels like you’re picking the cherry off the top of the cake and getting on that eruption bandwagon…temporarily…while it makes you money… It always felt like it was greed that came in with the new ownership, greed and a change of priority. And that priority wasn’t the truth. Valur gave us the truth about Iceland, honestly and openly and allowed us to judge for ourselves. But the new ownership didn’t like that he talked to us about politics and things as well… Now why was that?
Nothing good came of Valur’s leaving. You utter idiots.
The last episode with Valur came up at the end, the one where he told us he was leaving. Heartbreaking 💔
    Just our opinions.

I found this video interesting and relatable, I was in Iceland in October 2019 and drove as a day trip to the black sand beach, just ran out of time to visit Lava Show in Vik. However, I have mixed feelings for Grapvine. Since the first eruption I watched avidly then suddenly the channel closed, and the reporter disappeared from my screen. This channel was a great source of information, some truly spectacular broadcasts from the lava fields as well as about life in Iceland. Coming out of lockdown it almost became a friend to check in with. The lady gave a good account of the situation, there are other channels out there too, I will judge by what is broadcast over the coming weeks.

I was in Myvatn during the Krafla Fires (quiet bit, dammit). The only warning notice was an A4 sheet of paper stapled to a board. "We expect this to erupt without warning. Do what you like, but don't expect any help". Went back a few years ago and there are barriers and "slippery when wet" signs everywhere. I guess some tourists lacked common sense...
