How to fix drive is not accessible in Windows 10/8/7
External hard drives and USB Flash drives are used everyone nowadays to store personal data on there drives, this could be data like documents, photos, music, videos and a lot more.
Sometimes, without warning the disk shows a Location is not available popup box or "Drive is not accessible when trying to access the drive, you get Access is denied" error message. This error will make accessing the drive impossible until you fix the error. You can't get access to your personal data. Over the years I have seen this error on different versions of operating systems like Windows 10/8/7.
Remember A USB flash drive is not a long to backup solution.

Thanks so much for this video. I have many external drives and first time I ever experienced this! It was a new drive that I'd transferred some files over to, then I had this same problem accessing the drive afterwards. Had no clue as to what was going on till I googled and found your video here. I had formatted it beforehand so not sure what caused it? The only issue (ha) was that it's a 2TB drive so it took like 8-hours or so to complete step #5 (verifying the free space). I started to stop that step, but then decided to just let it run. When complete, it worked perfect as you described. THANKS AGAIN for your help!!

Hi Britec09, your post saved my 8TB drive! Than you. I had about 800gb of music files and some other data and used your tutorial. The chkdsk repair took about 18hours, I assume do to the size of the external drive (8tb), glad I didnt end it as the actual master boot record fixes seemed to be executed at the very last minute. Again thanks!
BTW, I looked at 2 other videos before finding yours, and your tutorial is the clearest and most complete.
Just bought a new flash drive and just put in about 25gb of files. How long do you reckon it'll take? Been about 10 mins and still at 0% and I need to submit the files..Ugh

Thank you Bri, this worked like a dream on my WD Passport external drive. PC was showing the drive as RAW, but I followed your instructions and left it overnight to run. All fixed by the morning, brilliant 👍
i am also havin this prob with my WD passport 2tb. in stage 4, this man only has 240. In my case it is 221424 😑😑
@@thevixxstudios so just wait for 3-4 hours or more. In my case it is 83696 because it is the partition only having 530 gb and it is completed in 1.76 hours
same i had 1.5 tb of movies and shows that i have been ripping and processing for literally months . i couldn't believe it my heart sank ... this video help im now in the process of moving my data to a samsung drive ... western digital can do one

Thanks so much for your advise on this one. I had 32000 shots saved on a Comstar external drive and could not access them. You guys certainly made my life a lot happier when the problem was fixed and I managed to copy all the shots onto my PC drive. Brilliant!!!

yeah i have my whole lifes work on this drive, with so many 32 bit exrs and work files and assets, running chkdsk, hopefully recover

Worked perfectly 1st try on a 3TB WD it took a while just like you said because of the size of the drive and the bad files you saved me $80 from the nerds of Best Buy would have charged to recover disk lol thank you!!

Same here, not working for me
Using CHKDSK /f works for disks that only show up as "Local Drive" So for example, if the disk with the problem is only showing up as "Local Disk (E:)", then open a command window (You need to be logged in as an administrator).
Then type "CHKDSK E: /f" (the fix is for 'fix'. It won't format anything). Once CHKDSK is finished, your drive should show up normally.
why my cmd is, Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. what can i do? please help

Hey Britec, when i try to access my drive like clicking on it tells me it needs to be formatted, i checked disk managment, it shows its in raw.. when i tried to do the chkdsk /r (drive letter) it says :The type of the file system is NTFS.
The first NTFS boot sector is unreadable or corrupt.
Reading second NTFS boot sector instead.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted." ... what to do?
put the usb in another port in your computer or use another computer hope i helped

@@Siavosh9 It never worked for me after that. I had to do restore the data to another hard disk at a professional shop. But it worked with many people as I saw in the comments. So maybe keep on trying or call a professional shop for support. Hope it gets resolved

It didn't work at first but I applied the method you used to another set of permissions and got lucky. 20+ years worth of data restored. Thank you!

@@kelly1st I followed what the video said but also applied the method to another folder I will have to back track to find out exactly what I did. I was just basically throwing darts blindfolded and got lucky but the method worked. I was just so happy that I was able to read the drive. I'll definitely get back to you about where I applied the fix.
Ahh! Bummer! I've tried so many paths. I accidentally hit the "system restore" in HP tools and it formatted the HD even though I hit cancel. When I followed the directions here, the cmd prompt responded: "Cannot open volume for direct access."
I removed the HD and loaded it into a "plugable NVMe SSD enclosure" to try and recover the data, but I have had no luck accessing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Brian, another excellent video. !! 👍 However it did not resolve my issue. When I ran the syntax from the CMD line for my external 2.5” internal drive slaved out USB I received the error: “Cannot open volume for direct access.” Not only that but following your previous step before the CMD line, I am also “Not,” able to read/recognize the drive in its raw form. I’ve been battling this issue for quite some time now. I go from either, “disc is not initialized,” to “cannot initialize due to fatal hardware device error.” I’m about out of options here. The disk that I’m trying to access and recover data from was the former “primary drive,” from one of my other laptops. It has data that I need to recover, but cannot mount the volume for some reason. Anything at all that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated. As always I appreciate all of your tutorials. Best regards from across the pond 🇺🇸 - Keith

In your Disk Management window, it says "Disk 2: Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)". Mine labels it "Disk 1" but doesn't give the status. It doesn't say healthy or raw or anything.

Took about 18 hours but it worked thank you!!! For anyone panicking if it gets stuck, mine stayed on the same percentage for about 6 hours but eventually progressed, depending on how big your files are it can just take longer :)

Apologies in advance if you see my question on multiple videos, but I can't find any video helping with my issue.
My external hard drive gets recognised and is supposedly running healthy and with most recent drivers, however, I can't access my content on the hard drive and it doesn't show in my computer.
When I open disk manager to try and change drive letter and paths, it tells me I "must initialize disk (my external drive) before disk manager can access it"
But obviously I'm worried it will wipe my whole drive.
So I don't have the option to do anything without initializing the disk first.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

This happened to one of my 4TB HDD's after taking the computer apart and back together. The drives got over 3TB worth of Data on it I hope this works..

My 4TB drive with 1.5TB of data on it was having the same issue this morning. I ran the chkdsk and it's on stage 1 at 37% over all progress of 0% for 6 hours. The file count is increasing but very slowly. Should I let it run or is there another way of getting the data off the drive?

hi, I know it's been a year and maybe too late but the same thing happened to me. I still followed every step that he said and it worked :>. I guess it doesn't matter whether raw or NTFS is indicated in disk management as long as you follow the command

Basically , when I click files and go to 'My PC' I go to hardruve and double click , and it shows all the files inside of the hard drive now the actual hardrive itself

how about, when i connected the drive, it shows f: and g: when i tried to access it, it doesn't do anything, i try command prompt it reacts (not freeze, but react after i unplug, and it says unavailable) after i unplug the drive, try formatting it doesn't do anything (again), i have two drives to fix, 1 from an old mini laptop (all the same as what i say up there) and another 1 tb from the broken laptop of my sister (the laptop problem is it wont boot and stays in DELL tm logo, the drive are replaced with another one, so the "replaced" one is the 1 tb). please, it'll be a waste if its not working

As soon as I connect it file explorer starts to lag and it doesn't even show the capacity of my pendrive. when i double click it it says 'drive is not accessible. a drive which does not exist was specified.' when i used that chkdsk in command prompt, it got hanged and nothing happened after clicking enter. plz help.
