Love how creative you are, as for the tables feeling like sandpaper, you can always add contact paper with decorative designs to help smooth it out and make clean up easier.
No to contact paper he cooks on it will make the paper come loose. Sand and varnish will be the best.

Also....if you want to keep the wood look....it can take some time. Sand the top (NOT aggressively), wipe off the dust, varnish again. Let it dry completely, sand it again. Wipe off dust, varnish again. It might take many times of this, but it will eventually stop soaking up the varnish and the sheen you desire, without as much roughness, will emerge. Sounds counterproductive to sand and varnish, sand and varnish. But, it works. Good luck!
