As a New Zealander as fascinated as i am by an 8th continent, & actually suprised it took this long given a simple Google Earth view shouldve shown what looked like to be a continent. And i wonder if its rising again given the huge uplift of the Southern Alps, only mitigated by massive erosion. But all that aside, i think we should focus on New Zealand being included on maps before we start pushing for Zealandia to be included on maps haha!
You could ask the same comment to Australia. They own land on zelandia. Plus having a continent named after a country doesn't give them overarching rights to ownership. World Maps would look very different if that was the case.
I was so pleased when we finally got continental status. Ever since geologist, Hamish Campbell, published his book 'Zealandia: In Search of Ancient New Zealand' in 2007, I've been fascinated by this continent. (It's my most-thumbed book and even travels with me around NZ!)
If the International Astronomical Union can reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet, then the International Union of Geological Sciences can also reclassify New Zealand as a Continent
You do realize Pluto actually wasn't reclassified, it's just we hadn't sat down and decided what a planet actually was and that's what the I.A.U. did and Pluto no longer meets the requirements for a planet but does for a dwarf planet, also zealandia has been recognized as geologically odd for decades, these guys just confirmed it with continental rock samples 👍😁( I studied geology at Otago university btw)
@@Jos-scifiwriter According to google: Pluto was once our solar system's ninth planet, but has been reclassified as a dwarf planet. It's located in the Kuiper Belt. Btw...I know that Zealandia has been known for decades. Therefore, it may be surprising that geologists cannot figure out how to classify the area as a flooded continent
Before demanding being classified as a continent, getting enough recognition to make it on to a world map could be a better starting point, baby steps.
If you want to have Zealandia included in curriculums, just say that New Zealand now identifies as a non-binary continent. Education departments love this kind of thing these days...
Came across an interesting possibility/theory about the eye of the Sahara being Atlantis and about 1200 feet above see level. The antipode of zealandia is the eye of the Sahara and had also sunk on the zealandia side, pushing the eye of the Sahara higher then when Atlantis was possibly there. @RoseNZieg They actually collided more than 300 million years ago, back when Pangea was the combined landmasses. Europe and Asia haven't separated since then. You're probably thinking of India, which is a newcomer, and is still colliding with Eurasia.
That is where Lemuria was before it sunk, probably due to a huge ancient earthquake or something. I still love telling people that I live on an island as I am on the North Island of New Zealand , lol 😊

Brought to you by the New Zealand Tourism Board. It might be more appropriate to say that it used to be a continent, but if we start counting everything in the past and under the seas, the list might go on and on until the term becomes meaningless.
The Land of the Long White Cloud was a term used by various North Island tribes. However, it does not refer to the whole country. The South Island which is the larger part of NZ was not included in the making of the coloquialism that was localized in the North only. Also, a cultural name was given in those localities as Aotearoa which is interpreted from The Land of The Long White Cloud. We don't walk around calling it either name, just good ole New Zealand!
If Zealandia is a continent, then surely India is no longer a subcontinent. They're basically the same size, but one is mostly above the waterline and has had enormous geological impacts. Plus it has the cultural and political aspects that continents often have. I say this as a kiwi
India is connected to a major continent so that's why it's called a sub continent, zealandia is completely separate And independent of other land masses which is why it qualifys as a continent and India doesnt p.s. hi from southern New Zealand 👋
Well I don't know about that uni but when a geologist begins by telling us we all know there are seven continents when Eurasia is one continent geologically, and there are six, they lose all credibility with me.
