I'm mostly okay with Jagex nerfing things if these come in a timely fashion.
But when they wait so long to nerf them, just because they couldn't foresee how broken these new items/abilities would become, that's when we have an issue.
On the other hand, people like The RS Guy are the ones voicing our concerns to the Developers, but I think a huge majority of people may have forgot he's actually in the P.A.G (Player Advocacy Group) so it's basically his duty to speak for us; I'm typing this because I've read some people online saying Jagex is only (almost exclusively) catering to him and his concerns, but they may not be aware of this FACT.
My takeaway on this? Nerf sht a week later (at most), or maybe, just maybe Jagex, properly playtest stuff before release. What if Jagex just make a Beta World with these new weapons/abilities to let people play with them before release? This will, 100% get them hyped to farm them in the live game, I for one would be hella hyped to test the weapon and see if it's a good upgrade or not.
Edit: Man my english is terrible today :S

Im the same way. Like with ED3, it just took so insanely long for those to get nerfed that it was just annoying more than anything. The problem is that sometimes it feels like they nerf stuff just because they can, not because they should. With croe, runescape 3's first and only skilling boss, people were doing it so much just because it is what it is. Finally something different that doesnt have you sweating over activating abilities and prayers on the right tick for an hour. People played this boss because it was different. That does not mean you should nerf it. I get the xp rates but the common drops? almost a year after the boss came out? come on.

    • @traycarrot

People played the boss because the XP rates surpassed most of the skills' other training methods from 70 onwards and made people millions for even less work. @@EVILalwaysDIES I mean all styles are in the same area dps wise. In my clan Zer0 pvm we do dpm challenge gems on dummies to apply for dpm tags within the discord server. The tags go up in intervals of 150k damage and a new tier is only added if someone actually achieves that dpm. 1900k in 5 minutes is the highest threshold in all 3 styles that someone has reached with no one reaching 2050k yet. So at the highest level of pvm all styles are within that 1900k-2050k range. Pretty balanced if you ask me.

I think all of the problems boil down to transparency and communication with the community. When everything is a secret or kept under wraps people feel distrust. If they were more transparent about how they go about nerfs and communicated with the community about nerfs or potential nerfs would make the majority of players happier about nerfs as a whole. Personally I don’t really care about nerfs much as I don’t pvm anymore because my computer is ancient. At this point I just do other money making to fund my unhealthy obsession with dyes. Honestly I actually kind of like nerfs sometimes because it means I can get my favourite new weapons and armour for cheaper allowing me to put what I save towards more dyes.😅

Many, if not most, MMO do it these days, to avoid exactly stuff like that and also to stress test certain functions/new places in the game (lag at forinthry on populated worlds sends its regards). Some even give a minor incentive for players (some free goodies) if they need more bodies to test. Why does Jagex seem so adamantly unwilling to do this...? I don't say that will avoid any late nerfs, but it certainly could cut their number down.

While I do not personally work on any teams that regard game balance, I do work in Video game development, so I hear the discussions being had in regards to balance, I just don't often have any say in them. There are an endless list of reasons a developer may choose to rebalance something. Usually, players see balance as an issue of what an item does or doesn't do, or how well that item does a thing. However, thats not how development sees it. It's all about player interaction with that thing. So to speak on balance in general (and not specific to anything in particular) something could be very overpowered, but if its not "abused", its not ruining anybody elses experience and its not causing any real issues it will likely go unchanged. However, if there is a change in the user interaction with that thing, thats new information that could sway the developers to change their mind. I personally believe that the most likely explanation is that the item is so damn expensive that the player pool to had access to it was too small to call it "problematic enough" at the time to justify a change, but once there was enough of a player base that had it, it became more evident that there was an issue. Either that or it just took them that long to think of a solution that wouldnt result in the subreddit threatening to firebomb the studio lol

It's a tough topic. Nerfs coming long after a release shows a lack of mastery in the world of balancing. Which is completely normal - if the game isn't as old as this one. Usually this means the company isn't really thriving at retaining all of its best thinkers. On the other hand - what are they going to learn if they keep getting away with it? Also, it's their game. We've all had the option to leave for a long time. Also they are making bank off the game, so are a ton of other people. So idk, I don't see this topic ever being resolved.

  • @exantiuse497

They did the same thing with the Bik book. You used to be able to toggle it on for a few seconds at the start of every minute to get the prock for the clue scroll while consuming only a few seconds worth of charge every minute. Some say this was unintentional and a bug but I disagree, the Bik book was the only one that worked that way and the only one without cooldown on the toggle. In either case they nerfed it last November, a year aftrr release, so you can no longer toggle it and the cost of the pages doubled
Other examples are the greater chain nerf, the xp/gp nerf to ED3 trash mobs, and the last patch's nerf to chinchompas and incendiary shot (which was in the game since EOC started)
This style of delayed nerfing is bad, not just because it makes people hesitate buying new stuff because they don't know if it'll get nerfed, but also because it creates resentment in the people that got onboard late, since they know some people got to abuse the overpowered boss/ability/weapon etc for months or years while others never got the chance. Jagex should look at how new content plays out, decide if that's balanced or not and nerf it in short order, within a month of release, or else let it be in the game as it is

I feel that the reason they take so long to nerf things is because they take that time to get into the hands of the "masses" (the group of players playing at a high enough level/money standpoint to buy these things) and then they see the problem on the scale of thousands of people using it over hundreds.
A couple extra thousand or mil into the economy doesn't seem to hurt it when a small amount of people are doing something like Crosus, but when it's the only thing pushed for everyone to aim for mid level it starts to stick out. Same with Shattered worlds, ED3, etc.
I'm not saying that these nerfs are good in any way, but I can kind of see why they come so much later. If you think an item is going to get nerfed you wait on it, and if it's been 6-7 months you go "oh, damn, looks like that's intentional" and grab it. After a bunch of people have that realization it still takes time for those people to get used to it and max out the potential. The problem comes when a lot of people reach that milestone, and the devs all of a sudden see "6 trillion more gold than we expected was dumped from Crosus yesterday, we need to change that soon."
Again, not defending them, just saying one possibility on why it can happen.

    • @exantiuse497
      @exantiuse497 Рік тому

If that is the case then it's pure incompetence on Jagex's part. They have the data, they can see how the new content plays out and extrapolate what happens when x number of players uses it.
And even then it doesn't explain some things like the Croesus nerf. Croesus has very low barrier for entry, it has not seen any increase in popularity (in fact the opposite is true from my experience), and there was no new content released that made it extra fast to complete. They just observed it for a really long time before nerfing it out of the blue for no reason

Also if you got over a year to use an item you should be content on how much you paid for it vs how much you got to use it.

I'm guessing the number 1 reason for nerfing or "rebalancing" is due to bots that are "farming" at areas so the more quicker they can get their skill levels up the more likely they will farm at places with higher gp value (fast money making)
Naturally it's still not easy for Jagex to detect bots because there isn't really any online game that can do it with 100% accuracy, so it may take time to nerf something.
Another reason is "New Fast Leveling and Fast Money Making" guides which bots can do quicker than real people.
The best money makers are Bosses, so naturally some weapons will be nerfed but even PvM farming is a target for bots.
Anyway, the answer to why there has been a nerf really does come down to a New Faster Way of Training or Speed Killing Guide that the Developers haven't considered until it's obvious that it will unbalance a game.

Yeah even based on the video it looks like it's one of the reasons why a bunch of ppl are already turned off from endgame content now. Spend hours and hours to get an item/ability/skill level only for it to get nerfed. It just sucks when stuff gets nerfed. They buff certain parts of it and then nerf it to the ground after that. What's the point of doing that? I understand nerfs are necessary but that's not how u deal with nerfs. U gotta test it multiple times before u even release whatever content u plan to release. I definitely agree with some of the comments here. Jagex needs to have a lot more QA testers for whatever item/ability or skill which will be released so that they understand how it works and how it's gonna impact the game and economy. That way u'll have way lesser nerfs compared to already 3 nerfs in the last 3 months already and more incoming till the end of the year.

To be honest, I am concerned with the state of the game, just look at OSRS, they do have ways to test the updates that are going to come into the game, they can choose whether or not the update is good for the game. Have you seen the amount of effort that they have put into the new skill they are gonna release? Is amazing! Whilst we do not have the slightest clue of what is Necromancy... I do not remember where I saw it but, there was a stream where a Mod just said something like 'this is our game and at the end we are going to make it the way we want'. It's depressing tbh, I have been playing this game for 18 years but recently I just hate it, the updates are really bad, really far away from each other and the suggestions of even thinking on setting timers on the bosses is just a sign of where the game is going.... As they do not have the slightest clue on what to do, they just nerf it and say 'it is what it is'.... I even canceled my membership and started playing FFXIV because I do not want to invest any more time into this game, where the players are not even a second priority.....

The OS community really gets spoiled, ngl. I envy them. The mindset that "this is our game, we do what we please" is really arrogant and shortsighted. We the players are who pay for this game, we spend our free time playing it, WE should be the ones who decide the direction it goes. The shortsightedness of RS3 dev team's decisions is already showing, OS has seen steady growth in player count while RS3 has stagnated for more than 5 years

I always find the nerfs a bit of a bummer. I'm a returning player and have been back for a little over a year. pretty much every time i get to new content, it isn't worth doing because it has been nerfed into the ground. It makes it tough to not just skip content and go to the newer things. Definitely makes dead content, already an issue in RS, more common. It also makes a feeling that the players who got to that content earlier have a huge advantage over players who need time to get into content. It's rough investing so much time and money into getting upgrades and just hoping they don't get nerfed and you lost everything you worked for (finally got a fsoa, so preparing for the nerf)

When i finally hit max late december, some things i was looking forward to get where nerfed and the trend has continued since (still considering myself lucky i was a bit short to buy Ring of Death before they killed it) edit: at least RoD was a fast(ish) nerf, but it should never have released that way as it was pretty foreseeable what whould happen (lots and lots of players cheesing content they wheren't ready for)

Good, nerf things if they think it will make the game better.
People are going to be pissy about OP things they feel as though they have to run, and they're going to feel pissy when those things are made less powerful. Having broken things exist in game and not fix them just creates a chain reaction of impacting and ruining other things.
Jagex's timing is horrible, and they probably can prioritize better things to nerf, but I am beyond happy with the change.

Jagex has enough money and enough players, bring back testing worlds before every major boss or combat release. Let the players (A lot of which know significantly more about how things will impact the game than Jagex themselves because they do endgame PVM 16 hours a day) use them at instances of bosses or play the new bosses with endgame gear and give feedback so things will be in a better place at launch.

    • @Kranon
      @Kranon Рік тому +3

This is definitely the way to go. I'm piggybacking on your comment to remember everyone how much fun beta worlds were. I would PK people there all day with BIS armour, I could open clue scroll caskets over and over again, i could even see how my Telos Drops would look like and if it was worth it for me to keep streaking (drops are seeded).
If Jagex brought Beta Worlds back, they could hype the sht out of everyone because we would have freedom to test the new weapons or abilities added, we could see if they're broken before being added into the live game, and to a certain extent, we could even see the price points before they get their drop rates added based on their effects alone.
Not to mention this would give content creators plenty of content to make and playtest.

Rico wasn’t nerfed just because it’s damage was decreased. It was actually hugely buffed in the way it interacted with bakriminel bolts, which is evident in its explosion in price at the time; that being it rose from 600m or so and capping at about 2bil at some point.
Previously, you could only get 1 proc on ricochet as a whole and now you can get 7, which allows a more nuanced approach to doing dmg as opposed to a braindead increase to damage numbers.

If you get used to the idea of x being a stable piece of content and then start to save for it, buy it and use it only for it to become piece of crap for (at that point) seemingly arbitrary reason, it sucks. Atm I'm not feeling too motivated to chase new goals because next week anything could be 20x easier (maybe even through mtx cough) or harder so idk where to focus on.

All I can say something has to change because actions speak louder than words and every time words are spoken the actions at jagex paint another picture. This empathetic approach to hidden money grab tactics needs to stop. I would much rather jagex tell us hey we are nurfing this because it’s too OP and we don’t want you power leveling, getting bored, and canceling your subscription or like this two faced yak track… they extend it because the masses were “not finishing it”… and the solution was to double the time for yak track, make it 40% longer, 100% more time consuming, and 80% more expensive knowing very well the the masses who did try on yak track would just buy tokens for the last handful if they had no time left. So how exactly is this beneficial to the players who don’t have time to finish yak? They essentially just mashed two yaks together tried to make it look pretty by lowering the levels but level 50 yak is literally the halfway point to level 70. If we didn’t have time to finish one without buying tokens how can we finish two? And this is why I want real transparency because now I feel disrespected as a loyal supporter because I’m getting lied to in my face by say you’re doing something for your supporters when we can all see that’s not the case. 😑

Well, of course some nerfs do come late, on the other hand - they changed the ring of death quite early, and it also upset ppl, what makes me think, a lot of ppl do dislike nerfing in general. But nerfing, no matter if it happens soon or late, is a tool to shape and fix the game. Of course, this creates an additional risk when it comes to money, but this is the exact number 1 reason, to not be part of the "hype n' hate" culture. Simply think about what you can, want and should afford, be Always aware of the risk, and never make desicions that you can't explain with YOUR knowldege, unless you have a trustable source of information. A lot of ppl are very loud, but it's wiser to listen to the quiet ones.

Comparing a card game into RuneScape is like comparing your grandma to a crane. There are lots of hints from the game designers on why particular item was added into a game. There is a pattern of adding items into RuneScape and is to create variety to have a best in slot item in particular scenario. This allows the team to create new item but keep the bar in the same place.

Well when you have a vocal people like "The RS Guy" and his goon followers complain or say shit is overpowered they will tend to listen to the people who play the game the most and not look at it critically.
What should be done is like OSRS where they poll updates and nerfs would be a nice change. Or a public test realm for all the players instead of a small minority then you get a broad scope of what is and isn't healthy for the game.

  • @LTAT42069

If they can't nerf it in a month of less they should leave it alone.
For example, you talked about GRICO. What does nerfing it now accomplish? PBs have already been set, the meta has shifted towards it. It's like they're trying to balance all the 3 styles or so they claim and melee is always the bottom tier choice because it almost never sees anything significant. Bottom line for me is obviously it wasn't hurting the game bad enough that they felt it couldn't wait, so why nerf it months and months later?
Then the reverse... make an item OP such as RoD and then nerf it into oblivion so it goes from meta to unusable and a total waste of my Ironman's resources...
