- In this cook I did a Pork Butt on the Oklahoma Joe's Rider DLX pellet grill right on the bottom grate above the fire pot! I didn't have an issue other than not recording when I loaded up the pork butt and with the mic running out of battery at the end!?!?! ha ha The Rider crushed this cook and wow it had some awesome flavor with the Dr. Pepper injection and topping it off with some Hoochie Mama and Sugar Daddy rub from SuckleBusters made this a perfect combination!! Thank you to WTSO for sponsoring this video!! Thanks Easthills Outdoors for sending me the backpack cooler! Link below for any of you interested!

Nice job with the shoulder looked like it turned out great! LOL... Fat fingers and bad batteries are OUR worst nightmares.
Thanks Dash!! Ya when I don't have my helpers around sometimes I mess up and forget to double check!! Thanks for watching bro and be safe!!
We made pulled pork last night. Great video Ricer.
Awesome and thank you Josh!!! We love pulled pork!!!
Lolol !!! Ricer's videos are a blast !!! Thanx for making it so fun !!! :)
Thank you Scott and I am glad you enjoy them bro!!ha ha Hope you have a fantastic week!!
Awesome video as usual Ricer! Really a fun watch!
Thanks Brian!! Hope you get back to making some videos again soon!!! Be safe brother!
Dead Broke BBQ well it just so happens I started making videos again about a week ago...with a new grill...you’ll have to give it a “look see”!
Ive always had interest in those Oklahoma pits. Just never pulled the trigger. I bet wine would make an awesome spritz:)... I'm not much of a wine drinker. lol Ricer, That looked great brother. Enjoy!
Thanks Tommy! Ya I enjoy a little wine but I get a little squirrelly once I get that first bottle a home! hahaha I like the Rider and so far it has preformed pretty dang good! Thanks for watching bro and be safe brother!
I came for the pork and got entertainment as well as awesome pork. Good job coach! 😂
Thanks brother! I appreciate you stop in here! I am always glad to see a new face in the comments! Have a great day brother!
Lookin good Ricer! Wine and Pork Butt! An interesting combination!
Thanks Tom and ya honestly it was pretty dang good!! The flavors match well and I am not saying that just because I was a little buzzed up at the end!! hahaha Thanks for watching and have a great week bro!
Awesome buddy ! I make wine I like a break from beer sometimes. I've never tried pork butt without wrapping! I figured it would get really crunchy on the outside. I'll have to try it. Thanks for the video!
Ya the bark is a little stiffer for sure but I like that crispy bite. I mean it isn't like concert but it does have a little extra snap!! Thanks for watching bro and be safe!!
SO-NO-MA not Somona! You make me laugh! Nice video!
Hahahah oops! Thanks for clarifying that Sean!! Hope you have a great week and glad you enjoy my content!! Be safe bro!
Hah yet another great video brother, you had me cracking up. The pork did come out good on the grates, I’ll definitely be doing this. Awesome job Ricer!
Ya Charley I have done a few more cooks now on the bottom grate and it came up awesome! The grease seems to either burn up on the deflector or roll off to the grease buckets!! Thanks for watching brother!
Great Video Ricer. Also congrats on 5k!
Thank you Bookla!! Watch out Pew Die Pie here I come!! hahaha
Man that pork looks amazing! Does your Rider temperature fluctuate much? I just got a Rider 600 and when I set it on smoke at 225 it rises to around 325 and then cools to 145ish then repeats. Never stays stable.
Thanks David! No mine does not have spikes like that! I have seen it jump up 50 but typically 25° but that is well within the norm! But yours seems to be way off??!! Might want to call customer service and see what they suggest but prepare yourself for a long wait right now due to them not being back in the office still because of Covid. Good luck and thanks for watching!!
pork butt came out awesome ! nicely done.
Thanks Mike!! Ya fun cook for sure and I will do that again someday, used to do it this way years back but started running a crutch to save time! Thanks for watching and have a great week!
Dead Broke BBQ you’re welcome ! Good stuff
Did I catch a little reference to dry-brining that shoulder? Maybe put that on your "list" if you indeed plan on a live chat, forum, or whatever you call it. Podcast...I'm so techno-lost it's embarrassing. Just like everything else, there's so many ways. Just curious what your experience has been on preparation and seasoning. That'll take a while to discuss. Great job again! Smoking a flat-lander pork loin and a pan of mac & cheese tonight. I'm going to go get started on the wine! Stay safe!
Sure Robert I can talk about how I do my meat prep! This Sunday I do not have any quests so come on in and ask that question! But I will jot it down! Awesome that sounds like a good dinner for sure! Oh that wine sure is tasty!! Have a great week brother!
Dang Ricer I'm ready for some Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Coleslaw. Great looking bark on that pork butt great content as always my brother. You and the family stay safe and have a great week .
Thanks Stephen and ya this cook was a lot of fun! Been a while since I ran a butt straight naked----hey wait I hope I don't get in trouble for saying that!! hahaha Thanks for watching bro and be safe!!!
Hitting the wine pretty good there Jeff..lol..Great video as always!
Hahaha ya and in the next video coming I did a brisket so it might be pretty similar to this one at the end!! But hey what else is there to do while you are filming a cook video!! Like always Keith, thanks for watching brother! Hope things are clearing up down there!!
Great one Ricer! Should put up a drink counter..lol..still put out a great cook, awesome video, thanks for sharing, stay safe brother!👍🍻
Thanks Craig and ya I was pretty impressed with how this butt turned out and I love the drink counter!!! hahahaha My next video that I will start editing soon was a long brisket cook and I got a little trashed in that one also!! hahaha Thanks for watching na d have a great week bro!
Been watching your videos and getting ready to pull the trigger on a pellet grill. Between the Oklahoma joe and the pit boss which would you recommend? I'll be doing a lot of reverse sear since i eat a few ribeyes during the week.
Well with you saying sear my pick would be the OK Joe Rider DLX because wow you can certainly get a good sear on a steak!! Now I am still practicing the technique on the Rider but I can say if you like a crispy outside the DLX will give you that for sure and the Pit Boss will try but not do the same. Plus the rider's sear zone is enormous! Hope this helps and both cookers are great for the money they cost! Thanks and have a great week!
Ricer that pork butt looked excellent . That bark was on point and looked juicy . Those rubs agve it some nice color and I'm sure flavor . stay safe cheers
Thanks John!! I was very pleased with how it turned out and it was a fun cook! Been a while since I ran a pork butt straight through! Thanks for watching bro and have a great weekend!!
I can relate to drinking lol.. Some of my videos don't make the cut lol.. The pork butt looked great..
Hahaha ya I got another low n slow cook that I am getting ready to edit next (brisket). Not sure how I did yet but I am sure I might be talking a little slower at the end of the video!! hahaha Thanks for watching Joe and have a great week brother!
I’m about to attempt my first smoke on the DLX tomorrow morning. I’ve heard flare ups are more prone to happen when smoking low and slow on the bottom over the fire pot. What’s your thoughts on the 2nd shelf on the right side? Possibly a water/drip pan under it?
I use the bottom rack all the time and I have used the middle rack a couple times. I have not had any so called flare ups yet but my guess is these flare up are caused by not cleaning the bottom of the chamber. I clean mine after every longer cook so it works out to be around every other cook. Good luck and have fun!! Thanks for watching and subscribing to the channel!
Great video brother! That looked really good. Now I gotta go get a pork butt. How much of a difference did you notice with the meat with not wrapping it? Also do you see a big difference in wrapping it in the end with just foil instead of putting it in a pan?
Thanks Jake. Well it certainly had a stiffer bite on that bark but not crazy though! I like to wrap because I can separate the fat and use the juice for a nice mopping sauce or we use a little of it to reheat the next day. But I certainly will do it this way again! I used to never wrap when I did all my low and slows on a rotisserie and those were always awesome! I like the pans because I do not have to worry about tearing the foil! Thanks for watching and have a great week bro!!
LOVE IT - nothing better to do than sit around and drink while waiting - it's a long smoke! Can't wait to break in my new Pit Boss! Any tips on injecting meat (like you mentioned using Dr. Pepper).
Awesome and have fun with that Pit Boss brother!! Honestly you can inject a pork butt with almost any sweet flavor that you like! We like Root Beer also. Plus I use Butcher BBQ Pork Injection also. I inject to add a little more flavor but sometimes I just want to test the pork. Thanks for watching and be safe!
Nice back pack promo, it had my attention the entire time😂
Haha ya that was a fun prop for sure!! It was actually pretty comfortable so I almost I had it on!! Ha ha Thanks for watching bro and I hope you have a fantastic weekend!!
Thanks for the video. With the rider DLX a coat hanger is your best friend if you don't run all the pellets out of the auger
You are correct! That was my biggest complaint about the DLX. Still a good pit though! Thanks for watching!!
Newbie here and to the DLX. I bought it for my husband for Father’s Day. We have our pork butt on, set at 250°. Does that sound like a good temp? Or should I raise it to 275°, I think I saw a reply you added that said you had it there. Will be subscribing and following you for more informational DLX posts!
Yes I run mine around 250°. Now with these pellet grills they do have a small temp spikes through out the cook obviously but my DLX seems to always do well when I run it at 250° on all low N slow cooks. Sometimes once it is wrapped I might bump it up to 275° to ramp up to finish the cook a little quicker. Good luck and just have fun!!! Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great week!
Very informative video, thanks about to bust the DLX out of the box now. !!
Awesome Todd!! Have fun and every cooker has some tweaks that need to be done! Hope you are had a great weekend and thanks for watching!!
I learn something every time I watch your channel. My old smoker was electric which is basically cooking in a smokey electric oven and you don't get a good smoke ring/bark. I set my butts on the racks but I'm going to move them to the bottom rack now. Ricer, I got the griddle for Mother's Day, have you tried the griddle yet?
Glad I can help Rhonda!! Set those fat cap down on that bottom grate and that cap will help shield the meat. Yes I have the carbon steel griddle also and I will be using it eventually. Carbon Steel will get very hot but I will season it up like a Wok and then do a couple videos using it. Thanks for watching and have a nice Memorial Day!
I was what’s up with the backpack lol...nice plug Mr Broke!
Hahaha Thanks brother!! I think everyone was thinking what is Ricer up to now!! ha ha Thanks for watching Eric!!
CA wine buddy, its da best!
I am not going to auger with that Todd! Thanks for watching bro and have a great week!
If I were in the market for a pellet grill, which would you recommend? The pit boss or the DLX?
If you want to grill also pick the Rider. Both are great smokers! The Rider just can do a better job and get a lot hotter! Thanks for watching!!
I enjoy the videos! I’m going to try my hand at my first BBQ video this week. I know there’s a lot out there, but I enjoy smoking meat very much!
Hey awesome Send and make sure you let me know when you post the video!! Have fun and remember the more you post the easier it gets!! Good luck and be safe!!
Thanks very much! Be safe!
Thanks Sean!
That pork was Looking good Ricer. I can relate to video malfunctions. It happens to the best of us. Definitely enjoyed this one.
Thanks Richard!! Oh ya just part of the game when you are making videos! Thanks for watching bro and be safe brother!
Great video Ricer ol' boy !!! I never miss a video. You're too stinkin funny. LOL!!!!
Hey tha ks Brian!! Well stuff just pops in my head and my brain aint fast enough to tell my mouth to stop sometimes!! hahaha Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy my videos brother! Have a great week!
Another great video! What would you say to doing a butt on the shelf set as high as possible and still getting the lid closed at a temperature of 225? I don’t mind a longer cook time. Going to try one as you did yours. Looked awesome.
Well you will have to set it at the lowest temp setting. From what I have seen from mine and others they struggle getting this cooker below 250°. But you can cook anywhere in this pit from what I have seen so far. The back left is a little cooler so that might also be an option. Thanks for watching Joe and have a great weekend! Let me know how yours goes!!!
Im in the trim off the fat cap club.
Ya I do it both ways. Mostly depends on the cooker I am using! Thanks for watching Tom!!! Be safe over there bro!
What was the total cook time without the wrap ?
Right around 9 hours including the rest time now I was running right around the 275° to 300° so not really a hot n fast but close! Thanks for watching brother!! Be safe dude!
Just put a cover over the smoker. No need to dump and burn all the pellets. Never had a jammed auger.
Well mine has jammed and my pits never sit outside unless they are in use. Oklahoma does suggest to burn out the auger after you are finished using it. Now I have had a couple jams after very high temp cooks. I was also using Pit Boss pellets when this happened but I have ran several bag of them through this rig already. So I do not have any real science behind why it happened but it did and I am not the only one out there that this has happened to on the Rider DLX. Auger jams take time to clear and this is way easier than dealing with removing the hopper to clean out an auger tube. Thanks for watching and have a great week!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ I haven't been dumping and I've been covering mine but the auger is starting to get loud. In KC it can get humid so now I'm thinking I better start dumping because it gets pretty humid here.
Nice vid ricer!
Thanks bud!
Sonoma County , not Somona County
Hahaha good catch!! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!!
Dead Broke BBQ , I like all your videos and right outside Napa and Sonoma Counties. You got me leaning on getting A Oklahoma Joe Pellet Griill
Awesome Darrell!! All these mid level pellet grills are decent but they all have flaws too! I have had a lot of good food come on the Rider and it is built very solid!!
Hey rice can you do a video on some smoke salmon?
John you read minds or did you bug my phone?!?!?! Because WTSO and I just talked and I will be doing some seafood videos soon and Salmon is one of them!! Thanks for suggesting and be safe bro!!
FYI It's Sonoma not Somona
Great video though 👍!
Thanks for replying back to if I was right or not!!! Good job Cai!!! Glad you enjoyed the video!! Be safe!
So lemme see if I'm following this.. You pounded on your meat..7 hours later, it was soft all over & Calls wants to be friends. Is that about it in a nutshell? Also.. When ManScape promo?
Hahaha ya that prey much sums up thee cook! Well I just need them to contact me!! hahaha Thanks for watching Tom!!
