- Surface Pro 8 vs Surface Pro X - THIS WILL SURPRISE YOU! (And Microsoft)
I am looking at the Surface Pro 8 vs Surface Pro X 2021 with the SQ2 chip. I put the Surface Pro 8 vs Surface Pro X 2021 head to head to see which of those devices will win the comparison. Are you looking to buy the Surface Pro vs Surface Pro X 2021?

Have you got a Surface Pro or plan to get one? If yes which one? 👇
Surface pro 8, i5, 16gb ram, 256gb SSD
Signature type keyboard with slim pen 2
I'm a law university student so all I really need to do is open PowerPoints and word processing, but I also have a mid to high end gaming pc so it's only right I go overkill
Can it run GTA 5?
@@narrativeless404 surface pro x can
@@emmanuelyudovsky5532 30 fps at low?
Weird. To me the camera and microphone seemed better on the X than the 8 to my eyes an ears. And the speakers sounded better too so it was surprising to watch this and each point hear you say it was better on the 8. Guess people have different perceptions but maybe its because you have them in person and can sense a difference that isnt picked up through the video so well.
They are, this dudes on crack.
EXACTLY, I FELT THE SAME
Lol exactly , even the screen and speakers lol
By a massive amount!
Agreed on the cameras and mic, but I think SP8 speakers had a tiny touch more bass.
Windows 11 on surface pro x is awesome. I bought the pro x and it came with windows 10 which was truly annoying as many programs didn't work. With windows 11, it's an entirely different experience! I love it!
I am looking for Surface Pro X windows 11, can you tell me more about the entirely different experience?
I love my Surface Pro X (SQ 1 8gig) and it upgrades to Windows 11 no problem. It runs great and has fewer issues than Windows 10, including running x64 applications. As far as I am aware, only the Surface Pro X has built in GPS which is handy for a road warrior.
The one thing missing is the ability to run an x64 Linux virtual machine, which I can't really do on the ARM processor. Aside from that, the Surface Pro X is my go-to laptop when travelling.
Can you run WSL2 Linux ARM? And or an ARM VM?
@@brianlogan4740 You have the same name as my son!
WSL yes, but no Intel support in Linux so ARM code only. VM, I'm not an expert but I think it is included and how LInux runs but at a basic level with only Microsoft VM support. There is no VirtualBox for ARM, for example.
Command line is fast enough. I installed and ran Nautilus file manager easily. Keep in mind that the SQ1 and SQ2 are not speed demons but really meant for Media playback, Office, OneNote and things like that, but not video editing.
I am not a software developer so I can't say if the Surface Pro X is good enough to develop and test Windows ARM. But it definitely runs Ubuntu through WSL.
@@logaandm it's a good name :)
If WSL2 runs then HyperV might as WSL2 runs as a lightweight VM
hi, im close to buy pro x sq1. how is battery time using windows 11?
@@psicolor6086 Couldn't say for sure. I don't often use it for many hours a day. Best to look at the published specs and then take 30% off.
the X seemed better in speakers, sound, video, and screen resolution to me.
I had the surface pro x running Windows 11 and upgraded to the i7 Surface Pro 8 with 16gb. The performance is night and day. I run dual 4k monitors am always on video calls and have slack running in the background. The X couldn't keep up. I love my pro 8, finally after much wasted money I have my do everything device.
You just confirmed my next purchase lol SP8 with i7 and 16gb ram …
How is the fan noise when running dual 4K monitors?
@@TheBlueOwlX it's fine. The fans generally run when it's plugged in but it's not too loud.
I have exact same setup. Love this machine, just not so good battery
@@JustinSCampbell how much are you getting?
Love my Surface Pro X. Slimmer, lighter, no fans and better battery. No software compatibility issues on Windows 11 too. Just don't trust Intel or AMD for consistently good battery. No way the Pro 8 beats Pro X with its ARM SOC for battery.
I have the original Surface Pro X and have already received the windows 11 upgrade.
How is it doing ? I am getting a great deal for a sq1 pro x for around 400 . I already own surface laptop studio so just want this as a backup and a tablet . I hate ipads :) . Is it a good idea to get the pro x sq1 now ?
@@hk6926 it works great. I've been thinking g about creating some videos with it on my other channel. Basically to see what it can handle, since some people seem to believe it cannot handle anything.
I disagree I feel like the microphone and camera looked and sounded better on the X surprisingly. The 8 colors were warmer but I preferred the cooler colors on the X camera
I have a base model Pro 6, and if I'm going to be honest I'm a but underwhelmed by the whole gimmick. Saw it for sale locally through marketplace, thought it would be an upgrade for me to do schoolwork on, make note-taking easier, maybe light emulation. But GOOD GOD I wish I had known how awful this keyboard was to type on for extended periods of time!! Every 3 sentences I'm having to hunt down my cursor and fix a word I just impregnated, battery life is complete garbage even on the type-cover, and no type-c is the hardest to deal with. Call me crazy, but my experience on a higher-end x360 chromebook was sooooooo much smoother and more modern feeling! Maybe I just haven't felt out the machine and it's capabilities. Hope it gets better. Anyway, great video keep up the good work!
You didn't compare battery life 😢
I feel like Windows ARM chips like the SQ2 are still in a "beta" phase and still not worth it. Maybe for super casual users yes but I will still not recommend it to anyone. ARM might be the future of the Surface line, but not yet. The Pro 8 is and feels much better in almost every aspect. The Pro X feels like a prototype and the Pro 8 the final product. Snapdragon chips need to evolve a lot if they wanna compete in the Windows space.
And awesome video as always!
I'm wondering if you have both or either of these devices?
@@rodri035 No, I wish. I have the Pro 5 tho, if it has any importance for this topic. But I'm literally addicted to youtube tech reviews and I have watched A LOT of real world reviews of both and I already played around with a Pro X 1st gen in a store. Great potential, but you can very well feel the SQ1/2 slowdown a bit when you multitask too much, something that even on my Pro 5 doesn't happen. Many programs also won't run or run with much less performance since they are being emulated for ARM. Windows 11 now has x64 emulation too, which is awesome and I can guess that nowadays almost every app can run on the Pro X, but rarely natively tho. That's why I say it is currently awesome for casual users, but if you need something that you can actually trust the Pro 8 is undoubtedly better. I just hope that in the future more ARM chips come to Windows devices because snapdragon is not doing much with it
@@azenyr I have the surface pro 8 and I had the X. You are correct about the arm aspect of the x. While for me the 120hz refresh rate on the 8 is probably the worse one I have used it is still a better device to use daily then the x. I am not saying people should avoid the X, but you have to know its limitations. Honestly if you are just an everyday user and just want to browse the pro x will serve you fine.
@@brettbutler6714 what do you mean by 120 hz is the worst one you used?
Windows on ARM (WOA) sucks at the moment as we wait for Qualcomm to get motivated. Sadly, MS are to blame, on two fronts, their slow WOA optimizations and apps, and also they did a deal where Qualcomm is only allowed to make WOA machines; monopolies are bad for consumers, and this is a case in point.
The Surface X Pro (SP X) is really a glorified, in price, Chromebook, really only suitable for light work, and it still seems to be behind the curve for the user especially if you have used the M1 MB Air. If you do not need pen support then a MB Air at under £900 is an easy choice over SP X. I see little advantages if you are an MS fan to buying the SP X over the SP 8 as I was underwhelmed by battery life which with M1 Macs seem to be far better. ARM is part of the future as were tablets and smartphones before it, and MS continues to be, not only late to the party, but also second rate at that. Lucky that they have the Windows pseudo monopoly and that their cash was invested in cloud resourcing as they have struggled to envisage the real tech waves in the last two decades.
what I don't understand why MS is not putting more effort into the SPX line up, I get where their business comes from, but starting with it and leaving it out to dry just doesn't feel right...
My prediction is Intel will get its act together before WOA becomes a thing. I've own both the pro x and galaxy book s and wouldn't recommend them.
WOA is not to blame, the hardware is. Using it on my M1 Mac mini shows it's pretty good (despite Parallels virtualization) and has a lot of compatibility (I can run 100% of what I need), but Qualcomm has been sleeping for years and only wake up after M1.... Now all of a sudden we have the 8cx gen 3 which is 85% faster in 2022 and Nuvia, which will compete with Apple, in 2023. But at this point the SpX is just too old and too underpowered to make sense unless it's heavily discounted. Battery life was weak on SQ1 because only 38wh and was only improved on SQ2, but still not big enough, should have been as big as SP8 to be great. At this point MS can do little but wait for Qualcomm new chips. In the meantime we'll see what Intel does. I am not sure big-little is enough to make up the performance per watt difference between X86 and ARM, but we'll know in a couple of years (Alder lake is definitely nowhere near ARM in terms of efficiency).
@@JustinSCampbell I have had both as well. Though I had the book s with the intel chip, which was worse off. I liked the book S at the time for under the $600 I paid for it. I returned my pro x back then due to the touch responsiveness of it.
Windows 11 is available for the Surface Pro X. It's essential too. Windows 10 on ARM doesn't support 64-bit apps.
2:32 You're out of your mind. lol The microphone on the SPX sounds MUCH better. Colors look oversaturated on the SP8 too. Even in the side-by-side playback videos. Vivid? Sure. But fake.
It’s called UA-cam compression…
I love my SP8 i5/16/256 except one thing: battery life
How is battery life on it?
This really shouldn’t be the comparison. I just got a Surface X and it’s really for having a super light device for business travel so I can do work like I can’t on my iPad Pro. X or 8 are it’s own. X if you want mobile data. And bought it on super discount so no premium! Of course, Microsoft has ended the X.
How does he battery life compare on the 8 vs the x?
I'm still banking on Arm to eventually surpass Intel for Surface/Windows 11 tablets mid-late next year.
SQ2 chips I believe hasn't been updated for the Surface Pro X and is still just SQ1 essentially, as Qualcomm's 8 Gen 1 chips were not ready.
There are few things I am still waiting on the Surface before I throw away my iPad Pro.
- Next gen 4nm ARM processors - Qualcomm's 8 Gen 1 Chips and Mediatek Dimensity 9000 are going to be on many major Smart phones and Galaxy tablets.
- LTE variants, not just for Enterprise
- Windows 11 touch tablet gesture improvements and mobile app support as they are still better naturally better designed for touch for the time being.
Thanks for this video. Answered all of my questions I asked you under the comments section in your previous video about the Surface Pro 8. 👍
After watching your video I am leaning towards the SP8, but the 16GB version is really expensive here in Germany.
I was going to reply to your comment and let you know..one thing is for sure. If you decide to go with the 16gb version it will be future proof. Feedback from everyone is very positive 👍
@@ALLSTARSPACE True - especially running Android apps with Windows Subsystem for Android uses up a lot of RAM.
BTW did you manage to also test the battery life on the SPX? Is it significantly better than the SP8?
@@rramnel not really, you talking about half an hour at most…(more for the SPX)
Surface pro x is for business not entertainment so 8 is going to be better
How are you guys doing with battery life? My SP8's battery is dying much faster than my SPX did, but on Reddit they say it should be about the same?
Remember buying the X originally with the “SQ1” snapdragon processor, and aaaall the things they’re gonna add. A year later. Nothing. If they could come with a X that has an Intel processor I’d be set.
You didn't comoare the battery life, why?
Really starting to love yourt channel after recently finding it - I love your practical take on the features of these devices, not focussing on "more powwaahhh" like other reviewers.
Awesome feedback 🙏
I have to see your lip every time when you mentioned Pro X and Pro 8 because they sounds nearly the same. 😂
Ugghh...can't believe we're talking about 8GB RAM in the 2020s....Feels so 2005.
Der Preisaufschlag für die i7 Version lohnt sich imo überhaupt nicht. Auf reddit gibt es auch schon Kommentare das thermal throttling im i7 öfters auftreten kann..
Ja das ist richtig.
The i7 historically had cooling issues but I've seen other reports online this has been mitigated to a non issue in the 8 models.
But that price difference is huge!
Man this is the first and only comparison between the 2 devices on youtube (other than a scam video). So glad you made it. What's the weight difference between the 2?
arond 100 gram but its in thinckness rather than size, meaning the SP8 the 100g is put on its back..if that makes any sense, as for the video, there is low interest (accroding to the data) that's probaly the reason why nobody is doing it or has done it. In any event, I can hopefully help those few that are looking for a real comparison 🤩
@@ALLSTARSPACE I guess you mean low interest in terms of views, but I see a high like to views ratio and my guess is that over time more people will come via search....Anyway thanks for the reply. I just tried the SP8 today in a shop and I have to say it doesn't feel as heavy as I expected. The SPX is not worth it at this point, unless the price is really low. The new Gen 3 Qualcomm chip however is 85% faster and in 2 years we'll have Nuvia, which will be even better. So maybe Windows on Arm and the SPX can resurge....
@@_Digitalguy yes, the idea is long term and I noticed these other videos a while back and decided to do a real one. I always find myself in a position of finding out real life differences of devices as sometimes it seems really hard to find them. SP8 is great and I can totally recommend it…😀
@@ALLSTARSPACE Thanks, I am considering between Pro X SQ2 versus Pro 8 i5. Your video enlightened me more.
I heard the keyboards are interchangeable is one better than another ?
but surface pro x comes with LTE compatibility? or no
I went with x because of the LTE
The pro 8 is definitely a step up. The design was severely outdated compared with Samsung and Apple
You are comparing apples to oranges, one on Windows 11 and the other on Windows 10. You could have easily installed Windows 11 on the Surface Pro X if you enrolled into the Insider Program. And no it's not beta. It's the exact same build of Windows that you have on the Pro 8.
Bascially I reviewed both devices as they come and have been updated as recomended by Micrsosoft, hope this makes sense.
Windows 11 en ARM admite aplicaciones de 64 bits??
Better panel on the S8. The X is a little snappier with Windows 11
I am gravitating towards the laptop studio, any chance you can put a review out?
its not availble yet (over here) all it says early 2022...
Ok but here me out. The pro x is cheaper for a reason.
Great video. Pro 8 screen supports Dolby Vision. Could explain why it's better.
Nice review, after watching this video, would be interesting a comparison between the Surface 7 i3/i5/i7 and the Surface Pro X. The surface Pro 7 i3 comes at a very good price, just thinking i3 might not be enough anymore for daily "normal" usage. Any has one? Thanks.
Very nicely done review sir. I like both devices for different needs. I still use the SP3, so I'm looking to upgrade. SP8 seems the premium device with the premium price (would rather that one than the current one that just came out), but (correct me if I'm wrong) the SPX does have some very very good battery life right? If so, I would probably get that one because I mainly use my Surface Tabs when I travel for business (i.e. email, documents, Office 365 programs, MS Teams, SharePoint, Bookings, not games/movies really). Again...nicely done.
Many years ago I future-proofed my purchase of a Surface Pro 3 with an i7. So much so it's fine for me today. But I'm thinking I should sell it off and upgrade while it is still in excellent condition and the battery is good. Gotta decide on a 6, 7, 8, or X.
beautiful man very helpful
Glad it helped
Excellent video. Surface Pro 8 looks like the better device to me.
It is!
For me Surface pro 3 screen is gorgeous than surface pro 8. And battery life is better with pro3 than pro8. I recently upgraded from pro3 to pro8. But it seems like a downgrade.
The mics on the X are better than the 8
Link to that song used for the audio test?
excuse me what is breiter?
Hi. Does anyone knows if the 2 USB C ports gap distance are the same for both SPX and SP8? Im not sure if the SPX type C adapter (plug in both side usb C) will works with SP8.
Thanks!!
Did anyone go with platinum?
If Microsoft give camera advance technology ms tablet can defeat other companies
What song is that?
I like the x better
Camera compare why not record
howdy, randomly surfing around surface videos to make a choice, and u got a too god voice and eng language mixed with Deutsch accent :) too nice to hearing.
I will buy one, hopefully one second hand with broken glas. I only need it to test porting software to WIndows ARM and i only need to port software to ARM to get another checkpoint from the marketing department (no significant marketing at all for this crap). But if you have a long term software plan, you better check for portability problems as soon as possible.
Hope one day Microsoft makes a good, affordable, repariable/upgradeable fast ARM device.
To engineers: do not upgrade your windows 10!
Why?
@@hopkinsyks It is designed for people who just want to watch youtube and check websites.
Nice 💯

windows 11 sux, a lot of bugs!
Can’t beat my tab S7 plus 😁
lol
I’m a Tab S7 user myself, but the Surface Pro has it beat if you want to run desktop applications.
lol is that running android ? why compare these proper devices to toys like tab s7 or even ipad ?
