Great aren't they, like the old public information films. They were raw and to the point not like today all watered down and pc. Makes me feel about 9 again watching the archives, happy days!
Amazing; one of the strongest memories of my whole childhood was watching this story on nationwide and being obsessed with it; I was mad about monsters as a kid (and still am.) I always wanted to see it again, and... 48 years later, here it is. Wow: the absolute magic of UA-cam.
Same here - I was quite obsessed for many years after seeing this in the 70s and have thought about it often since. Shortly after this programme was aired my Dad found some strange stone 'balls' during some excavations at work and brought them home. They sat in an ashtray on the table in the lounge; I became convinced that they were somehow similarly 'cursed' and that our house would soon be visited by a werewolf!
I’ve never forgotten this news report. The sudden appearance of the werewolf clip and the account of the creature running down the stairs absolutely terrified me. So delighted to see this clip again.
What a fantastic find! This footage has been thought lost for decades and it's beyond our wildest dreams to see it rediscovered. Now for the movie rights!
OMG - I've been searching for this for years. I remember watching this when it was broadcast; I was 9 years old, and it was the interview with the woman describing a half-man, half-beast creature that made the hairs on my arm stand-up. I was totally scared to pieces by this piece back then, I had nightmares for weeks. One piece of my childhood that I remember so distinctly, and here it is.
I was nine years old in 1976 and I remember seeing this while eating my tea. I specificially remember the part about the werewolf jumping over the banisters. I never forgot it and only when I was able to confirm on the Internet many years later that it was an actual story that I felt that I hadn’t just imagined it.
I've never forgotten reading about the Hexham Heads in a book my friend's mum gave to me. It was called Incredible Phenomena, and it absolutely terrified me at the time. I was definitely too young to be reading that!
There's a Wikipedia page about the 'Hexham Heads'. Apparently people believed there was some kind of connection with the 'Hexham Wolf'- an animal that escaped from a zoo in 1904 and killed a bunch of farm animals before getting run over by a train. Also, a man who'd previously lived in the house where they were found tried to ruin all the supernatural fun, by claiming that rather than being ancient Celtic artefacts, he'd actually made them out of concrete in the 1950's as a present for his daughter.
OMG!!!... I've been searching for this clip off and on for decades, ever since I've had access to Internet. The only info I could find was on the wolfman footage was a couple of mentions on some obscure message boards going back years... not even any stills. I was only about four or five when this was shown, seemed to last longer at the time, showing the time dilation of a child's mind I soppose.. I remember sticking my head up my dad's jumper I was so terrified, which helped make it part of our family's loar . It serously effected me and this has really slain a few demons for me... So thank you BBC archive

I was one of the kiddies scarred for life by this. The film clip caused me to bound on to my mother's lap, sobbing hysterically. As I recall, presenter Sue Lawley apologised the next evening to all the parents who'd rung in to complain. Anyway, six months ago I made a video in Hexham, correctly identifying it as Oliver Reed in Curse of the Werewolf. It's garnered me thousands of views, and many comments (mainly from Americans, I think), about 'dogmen' being real. ua-cam.com/video/w-eZ4oywdTQ/v-deo.html
Yes, it freaked me out too. I couldn't sleep with the lights off for ages afterwards. I remember the 'apology' too. One of the presenters scoffed and said he didn't think it was as scary as Doctor Who. I remember feeling quite indignant that he didn't think I would know the difference between a trashy fictional sci-fi drama, and a supposed news magazine programme.
Look at you, reminding me of that old song by Warren Zevon: ‘I saw werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand; Walking through the streets of SoHo in the rain; He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fooks; For to get a big dish of beef chow mein. Ah-oooh, werewolves of London, Ah-oooh!’

This reminds me of some UFO encounters. It doesn't have to be fully real to be interesting. Perhaps the werewolf and other visitation beings are virtual images. A waking dream. A bit like a mixed realty VR experience, but conjured by our own minds.
If ghosts existed I'd wonder - is the wolf man a Roman legionary? Celts in the Legions wouldn't have given up their religion. The Signifer (standard bearer) wore an animal skin over helmet and shoulders - sometimes a wolf skin. Did he bury the heads in thanks to his gods? Is he looking for them? Ooooooo, spooky.
interesting. I don't believe the stone tape theory personally. But then I don't think time is what we think it is. I was about to say the entity is seen from its own time but then that doesn't explain the use of the stairs does it.
I am sure I am not the only person scared sh***less by this clip when it was first broadcast. I recall not daring to put my head under water in the bath for several months!
@@mgthestrange9098 I don't know. I was just talking about the Wikipedia article. These were made at a time when the BBC were losing out to ITV for ratings so I suspect it has much to do with that.

Just heard about this in Fortean Times, great stuff! I read about these heads in their article some years back, all pretty eerie.
