I've never heard Duke Ellington speak before. It's like hearing a lecture from your favourite historical figure. This man deserves to have his face on currency.

He is, baby!

Pure class.
Genius!
I love how he always looks like he's holding back a smile.

That’s a very sweet analysis
Duke Ellington was the prime example of charisma. It is scientifically impossible for one not to like him!
What an intelligent, witty and elegant person he was.
Man, how could anyone not love Duke Ellington. He’s the epitome of class and style.
That necktie tho
Duke is the reason why 20th century music sounds the way it does. He was the one who kept coming up with new harmonies, new melodies, new ways to put them both together and come up with something new. And he kept pushing and growing music for 70 years. God bless him and his music. And also the many musicians who gave voice to his compositions. LOVE this man.
Ellington is just one of the composers. Debussy, Ravel, Gershwin, Berry, Davis, and on and on of composers that left their individual mark. In fact, you could make a good argument that Hank Williams left an incredible mark on popular music
Thank you for not blaming him for the mess in 21st century.
That's actually completely incorrect. He had a lot of influence on the direction of Jazz, but not so much so outside of that compared to other composers. The composers that had the most influence on 20th century music would definitely be the likes of Debussy, Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, John Cage, and Steve Reich.
for sure, I think if you asked the average person what modern/classical 21st century composer they like? they'd respond Beethoven or Bach, pretty pathetic
@@spactick Without question, though I would question just what lasting impact Debussy had on American music. Gershwin, yes, Ravel to an extent, Check Berry a bit, and Miles to some extent, though it's largely gone, now.
Ellington set the harmonic pallatte for American music, and did so for decades. He would come up with a new chord progression, and suddenly everyone else started using it, too. He set the stage for how our ears progressed for two generations.
I would put Him alongside Gershwin and Ives as the three biggest composers of the 20th century. But of course, that's just my opinion. And it counts for nothing.
As a drummer, a great thrill in my life was when (in 1973) Duke and his drummer Rufus Jones let me sit in with the band... and of course Duke was playing too. Got pictures or nobody would have believed me.
Awesome

Mr. Ellington was a musical genius, and a gentleman in the truest form of the word. A national treasure!
When I heard Duke Ellington say he liked to isolate himself as a writer, it justified my life-long life-style.
I think most writers/composers do that
@@Bix12 Some do it so they can sit there and stare at the water, others like to hear the sound of the city, or the country, while some have to evade criminal attention. He spanned the whole history of American modern music !

In any event, his mother worshiped him, gave him such love and confidence to be anything he desired and prepared him for any adventure he wanted. First time ever hearing Duke Ellington speak. He has that Jazz man's voice for sure
A class act. And one of the greatest composers in music. Duke's sister Ruth was my dearest friend. Thank you, Mr. Cavett. You had some of the greatest guests ever.
It was my privilege to play for Ruth one evening with my hotel trio in NYC. She and a younger lady came in for drinks and she just casually mentioned her name…and we played nothing but Ellington tunes for an hour. She was exceedingly gracious.
He passed away three years later from lung cancer. Such a shame he had so much life and vibrancy in him.
I can't even put into words how much this video means, to see Duke Ellington in full form at 70+ is such a treat!
The Duke's hair is a masterpiece. A double comb-ever with a long DA in back.
It was Harlem, baby
I still can't figure out how Elington is combing that.. Then again, isn't Cavett wearing a good toupee?
Donald Trump learned well.
Musical and sartorial opinions together make absolutely no sense at all.
This has to be the worst haircut ever.
What a class act!!! Duke is one of those artists who just sucks you into his personality and his world both on and off the stage. What a charismatic legend.
Stevie wonder dedicating a masterpiece song to this man Called "Sir Duke" That tells you all.

In 2016 it was my glad and solemn duty to care for my grandmother as we made preparations to move her into residential care. She was suffering from vascular dementia, she was 90 years old. It was a hard time, sometimes she felt like the powerful lady I had known as a child, but mostly she was like a cared but often truculent little girl. One evening after a day of her being in quite the fog, I went through her c.d's and put on a disc from a collection of Duke Ellington she had brought from France. She was looking out of the window into the dusk and "Black and Tan Fantasy" strode out of the speakers and this white-haired little old lady with nearly translucent skin, smiled with a gleeful glint in her eye and said "This is my music...." It was probably the most lucid she had been all day and she even did a little shuffle.
In her youth she had been big into that era of jazz, she was working in some comms job in the war in London and it had been Jazz that had kept her going, in the post-war she loved it even more and it was the only music I recall playing in her house, she once took me to watch Disney' 101 Dalmations and in the car on the way home she told me about Jazz music and gave me a tape of Shelley Manne and his crew doing covers of Mary Poppins, I played it over and over... I have her Duke Ellington c.d's now.
Sir Duke - a most gracious, elegant guest!
Duke was scholar!
Very intelligent brother!!
Unmatched!!
Dick had a great show.
There's been a mistake, the title should read "Jazz discusses his sleeping habits"
Four Stars.
Well they're used interchangeably, so I'm not mad.
The classiest man to ever live.
I used to think the name "Duke Ellington" was too strong a name for any living man.
I felt the name was too heavy and no amount of posture or poise would be able to carry it gracefully...I'm pleased to say I was obviously wrong.
Duke walks and talks like a Duke Ellington in a great film would.
Duke Ellington is my favorite musician. It's really nice to get a glimpse of his personality through videos such as these.
These old shows are much better than ones today.
Bernard Thomas because the guests were so much more talented, interesting, and funny back in the 70’s.
Steve F right on.
Maybe the hosts actually had personality
These shows aren't nearly as good as the ones from 2120. At least you can watch yours
What a lovely Man ❤
What an eloquent, witty and charming man. I’ve only heard his music but I’ve never heard him speak until today. I wish I could be this suave in life!!! 🙂😃
the duke was so educated....
in his field...he was a phd X 1O
SELF EDUCATED.....so INTELLIGENT he WAS!
Ellie5621 self taught more so in composition and writing, the ideals before Billy Stayhorn were all his
Ellie5621 Duke Ellington was extremely innovavtive. Along with Strayhorn, he advanced jazz harmony so much! He explored the unknown. Self taught. Einstein had teachers but taught himself enough to change the world. I'd call him self taught too.
@Ellie5621 Very true. Myths like these need to be busted.
OMG!...ive UNINTENTIONALLY started a HIGH-BROW DEBATE!....coooool.
@Ellie5621 Much of what Duke Ellington's wrote were variations on 12-bar blues, which doesn't require huge expertise with music theory or harmony. Where Ellington really shines is his almost-instinctive (because it's present from his earliest writing) deployment of color; as the great jazz arranger Bill Holman put it, "I hear Kenton with seven trumpets and six saxophones playing, and I know exactly what he's doing; but Ellington deploys a clarinet, a sax and a trombone, and I have no idea what's going on." Duke's mastery of color, and his ability to contrast colors to echo call-and-response between instruments, is why he's the greatest.
This is wholesome. Duke brough out the funny in DC. That quip about the record was quick.
You actually see the sleep bags under eyes that’s when you know he was hard worker….. the idea is more rewarding than the sleep.
His energy is so mellow, I love it. And he’s right, creatives should be grateful for the inspiration in the wee small hours; I always fight it to try to sleep. Maybe I shouldn’t 🤔
He is godfather in the history of jazz music.
He has the ease of someone who knows his greatness.
Duke was the fucking man. What a class act. Greatest and certainly the most important composer of the 20th century.
Duke = Intelligence, charisma, taste and music! One of the few who deserves to be called genius and legend.
So wonderful to have these legends on record. God bless this modern era for that.
The greatest American composer.
I am happy to see this. THANK YOU.❤️
One of my favorite Ellington quotes has always been *”music is my mistress”* , something that resonates with me entirely
Thanks for sharing this treasure. Any chance you could release the video of Duke's performance at the piano that evening? We see him standing up from the piano at the start.
What a Gentleman.
Absolute legend.
Half convinced this man didn’t sleep. He accomplished so much in his lifetime.
A musical genius with a cool 😎 name and personality exuding humility, elegance and pure class. A legendary figure. Gone but never forgotten. Rip legend.
I must say, aside from the crass nature they have him in bigmouth. They had the man almost spot on, in terms of how kindly he was how much he smiled and stuff like that. This was truthfully worth a late night gander I must say. As I was curious about him lol. Such a gentleman, really someone for anyone to look up to.
Jordan Peele does his voice (very well). But the real Duke isn't a ghost in an attic, he's out orchestrating a galaxy.
He doesn’t need to bow to anyone! 😤
Such a humble and gifted musician. 🫡
I really loved this interview; eloquent man.
He radiates my favourite combination of characteristics - humility and genius.

Duke Ellington....what an honor. A giant of his music and genre, and no doubt much wisdom to have passed on to others.
P.S.: Love that snazzy, artsy tie
He was so wonderful
I have most of his vinyls recording since the 1950s. Unfortunately iTunes doesn’t have some of my favorite vinyl records.
Dick cavett has the most iconic of figures on his show.
Marlon was the most iconic guest ever
yeah...John Lennon, Marlon Brando, George Harrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Ronald Reagan, Kirk Douglas, George Carlin, Orsen Welles and so on
Yes but he had the fortune to host his show at a time when you could have icons and interesting people on. Nowadays it would be impossible.
Finally, not misuse of the word "iconic"
So happy to hear that one of my musical heroes is as well versed in sarcasm and humor as he is in harmony. What a joy this is.
gentleman! He carried himself with such grace, love you
Ellington of course was a man and an artist much deeper than his four-kiss, love-you-madly persona, but he was no phony. As with his music, his interaction with people was cultivated from the heart. It was how he wished to _be_ to others, not just how he wished to come off or create an illusion.
Similarly with Cavett, who is an artist of talk. If he sometimes is pleasantly obsequious, it comes out of a genuine respect for the artists and creators who crossed his stage set. He knew he wasn’t the headliner on his show, and yet he added so much with his rapport and well-spoken nature.
This show never ceases to amaze me with its guest
and to think, at the time, these were just regular people that the audience was used to.
Duke was such an elegant guy!
Rest In Peace Duke.Your memory and music will last forever.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dick Cavett's show is like a library or enciclopedia to me. What a document!! This is the first time I see Duke Ellington.
One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. In the same league as Beethoven, Bach and all the other composers who were on the scene more than a century ago. Ellington will be listened to and appreciated in the same way.
It is important for people who know this to say it as often as possible.
The lady was a young Sally Field, probably after the Flying Nun and before Smokey and the Bandit.
Thanks for this amazing gift! Never seen Duke speak before and he's such a delightful person in all senses! One of the greatest composers of the 20th Century for sure!
Rest in Peace "Duke Ellington" love his voice
Duke Ellington is not a jazz star. He is a star.
He can be both. There's nothing wrong with that.
A true gentleman! I love that he gave everyone 4 kisses.
This man is the Jedi Grandmaster of Jazz
What a lovely and intimate view with one of my heroes, anda musical giant fir the centuries!
Duke by name, Duke by nature ...
Duke, is a Prince fit for Kings. What a Rare Composer and Personna.. Absolutely Luv Him..
Needless to say - Duke should not be bowing to Dick. Nothing Dick could have done about it, so no issue there. Dick and his audience should be bowing to Duke. Fascinating footage. Thank you. Duke is obviously a workaholic. Those bags under his eye's are proof. We love you Duke!
I’m 32 and these people are cool
I love Duke and I love Dick Cavett! This was wonderful!
I am now just after listening to chinoiserie. I’ve heard it many times but each time it still puts me into satori. He was an incredibly clever and insightful soul. He exuded fearlessness. And from all accounts a gentleman’s gentleman. Someone said it’s his face that should be on our currency. I like that notion. Oh to have a couple dukes to spend.
Duke: pure class.
I have most of this man's works. My favorite is his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite". As he said of Tchaikovsky, "that cat was hep!"
Sir Duke..still The King 👑
Can we go back to a time when celebrities and television shows were this classy?
Right!
Most hardworking man I ever read about. Seeing interview it shows he has great insight as a human being and it shine through people he ever worked with. He make sure the cats are alright, nurture them so they are fit to perform when they are touring. And that is just a wee bit about Mr. Ellington. Everybody should aspire to be kind to each other and be understanding so you reflict respect to everybody, not be tolerant, but to be respectful to everybody. Then you will have freedom to what you do best! And that he did. And that is actually the secret how to be happy. Spiritually!
Happy Birthday Duke

Always the same on the DC show (to my ears anyway)
It's more like a social interaction than an interview and I like that about the dick cavett show
It was hard for me to understand whether dick cavet was in such awe of being next to Ellington or whether Dick Cavett didn't realize who he was interviewing. @@spb7883Disgusting and demeaning? Perhaps, but I didn't assume that a silly cartoon gave an accurate depiction of the duke, hence why I sought out this interview.
morry850 Good for you. Many people I fear won’t be as inquisitive. I wrote what I did to underscore the fact that on this point “Big Mouth” mysteriously gets a pass in the media. I wonder why. The fact that “Big Mouth” is tagged in this video is also telling. The expectation is that fans of the show would see that tag on Twitter and watch this clip. Hopefully they’ll realize how demeaning the characterization is when compared to the real man.
