- Shad, trolling for American Shad In the St. Johns River using shad darts and small spoons. On this day the shad were fussy they only hit a pink shad dart, I tried other colors but no luck they were all caught on that pink jig. We had a nice day and had a lot of fun catching the Shad and caught enough to do a Catch and Cook making Shad Fish Cakes. #anericanshad #trollingforshad #fishingforshad

We always enjoy your videos. Your boss lady can really cook. Today's sample looked really great. Thanks for sharing with us.

We're glad we can bring back those memories. Thanks again for Watching
That looks delicious never knew you could eat shad and they got that big always thought it was a bait fish thanks for the knowledge enjoy it really looks good
Thanks, there are different species of shad the ones we were catching are American Shad they spend most of their life in saltwater. George Washington was a commercial Shad fisherman and Eisenhower served American Shad in the White House. A lot of people get them mixed up with those stinky shad that are in the river and lakes year round. Thanks again for Watching our videos
Those are really pretty fish. We catch them occasionally while trolling for crappie but have never targeted them. The fish cakes looked amazing!
Try them the next time you catch shad I think you'll like them. Thanks for Watching
My home waters, I know that area in and out. Great video and glad to see you guys did good on the shad, I catch a lot of sunshine bass in that same area. Keep up the good work.
They're a lot of fun to catch, we look forward to the Shad run every year. Thanks a lot for Watching
YUM
It was, Thanks again for Watching
Where did you get that incredible fish “Dutch oven” broiler fish pan? Maybe advertise it with a code for the manufacturer. That is an an amazing pan.
It was a gift from our daughter. It's an All-Clad fish poacher steamer, I've seen them on Ebay. Thanks for Watching
Would slow cooking most fish soften the bones making them eatable?
I don't think so, Shad bones are thin and I believe that's why they soften easier. Thanks for Watching
Very small fish like anchovies, sardines or even small herring, you can eat the bones depending on how you cook them. Using a pressure cooker will make the bones soft enough to digest
I am out of Green Cove Springs. Where are you on the St Johns?
We were Shad fishing in the Sanford area (Shad Alley) and Shrimp around Palatka. Thanks for Watching
What part of the st John do y'all crab and catch shad?
Crabbing , from Lake George to Palatka, Shad, South of Lake Monroe
Hoping you can solve something for me. Back in the late 60's my grandmother made these I don't know what's. She said they were fish chips. Sliced the fish across the body and then fried the pieces. I believe that they still had the bone in them but the bones were soft. Never had them after that. Does any of this sound familiar? I would love to know the type of fish it was. Shad keeps coming to mind but I'm clueless on this.
We cook shad like that here in eastern NC. Cut them like you described about 3/4" thick and coat with flour. Salt and pepper to taste, then deep fry in oil until crispy. I haven't heard it called chips but it sounds like the same thing.
We've been told to cook them the same way Michael described but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for Watching
Do you make your own jigs?
Yes
