  • The Stonebow is one of the most interesting buildings in the whole of Britain, let alone Lincoln, and it has rightly featured in many time shift videos already. The current building and archway dates from 1520, and has been in constant use ever since. But this isn't the first archway to stand on this site. The first was established in 211AD, as the southern gateway to the important Roman settlement of Lindum Colonia. This arch survived into the 8th century, when it first became known as the "Stonebow" after the Viking invasion, from the Norse "stennibogi", meaning stone arch. In 1237 the Guildhall, which was located to the south-east, was relocated to above the Stonebow, and in 1386 King Richard II presented a sword to City officials, and it can still be seen on tours today. But the buildings were now over 1,000 years old and had fallen into such disrepair that they were demolished in the late 14th century, and because of lack of funds not rebuilt until 1520. Oh if only stones could talk what tales would they tell?
I can just remember when double decker buses went through the arch, but my grandparents would have remembered when the first new fangled motor vehicles drove through it
It has been suggested that the old photo is from the 1920s, but it looks older to me, possibly even 19th century?
