- A volcano in Iceland erupted on Thursday for the second time this year, spewing lava up to 80 metres into the air in what is the sixth outbreak on the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula since 2021.
Live video from the area showed fountains of bright-orange molten rock spewing from a two-mile long fissure in the ground, in sharp contrast to the still-dark night sky.
“Warning: A volcanic eruption started north of Sylingarfell,” the country’s meteorological office said on its website.
Intense earthquake activity began about 5.30am and the outbreak itself started some 30 minutes later. The eruptive fissure was believed to be in the same location as an eruption on December 18.
The nearby geothermal spa Blue Lagoon will be closed on Thursday, the met office said.

Have there been any estimates of the effusion rate (m^3/sec)?
Between 6:02 when it started and 13:00 over a period of 7 hours the effusion rate was estimated at about 600 cubic meters per second. That's the highest I've seen in any eruption, and I've seen a lot since the 2014 Holohraun eruption. And I'm talking about lava eruptions like this one.
That's moving very fast. Who would want to live in this place ???
A volcano erupting where people live is a once in a lifetime occourance in this country
Blue Lagoon has erupted 4 hrs ago
imagine controlling the lava and piping hot steam into Turbines & to the grid $
