H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 242 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on March 19, 1978, and originally aired in early May of 1978. The weeks are slipping away. There's a new set coming soon. The Star Wheel arrives in 1246, and although I'll be glad to see a greater variety of celebs get to play the head-to-head, I'm also aware that its arrival means the end is drawing near. And then Richard departs in episode 1285, and everything will feel different... So I'm resolved to enjoy these remaining weeks to the fullest, and this one looks promising with another panel full of old friends - Our stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this time they're joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Patti Deutsch drops in for her 37th week (of 42). Her most recent visit was in episodes 1166-1170, and her current H/H matching rate is 50% (1 out of 2 attempts). ~~~Dick Martin returns for his 14th week (of 22 total), having last played in episodes 1171-1175. Dick has appeared on the panel for 65 shows so far, but has yet to be called on to answer his first head-to-head question. ~~~Last but not least, Arlene Francis appears for her sixth and final week. She's a long-time panelist, having joined the family in the second week of the program way back in 1973. This is Arlene's first visit since the week of 951-955. She's been chosen for just one H/H so far, but it didn't result in a match. I'd love to see her close out her Match Game '7x career by becoming the 39th MG celebrity to score a head-to-head match! (Rosemary Forsyth was #38, way back in episode 949, so it's been a long time...) Last week, for the second time in a row, Betty White answered one H/H question in an otherwise all-Richard H/H week. Reviewing the past 96 weeks, Richard has played *422* times. Everyone else combined played *56* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 13, Betty 5, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard slipped another tiny fraction - he's now answered *88.3%* (down from his recent high of 88.5%) of all the H/H questions during these past 96 weeks. Richard begins the week with a very good track record, having matched 42.4% of his H/H questions, slightly ahead of Brett's accuracy score (42.3%), but well behind Charles's awesome score (48.7%). Patti is technically at 50%, but with only two questions in the dataset, that score has to come with an asterisk. I'd love to see her answer a few more, and it's likely I will. Counting this week, she has six weeks left, four of which with the Star Wheel. That means she'll be on 20 shows with the SW. If we can expect one H/H per day, and Patti to be chosen 1/6 of the time, we might expect 3 or 4 questions for her. ~~~Today's action: Our champion is only playing to match Charles and Arlene in her second round. She needs one match to tie, and two to win... It doesn't work out for her, but she leaves with a nice bundle of $6,050 after winning three games. Now another new champion gets a shot at the Super-Match... *Today's audience match question: "________Exchange"* (My thoughts: Stock, Gift, Heated) The celebs: Brett (Stock), Charles (Foreign), Richard (Post) The choice: Stock The answers: Fair, Foreign, Stock I'm always happy when a new champion gets off to a good start in the Super-Match. Now for the head-to-head. This new champion chose Richard third, so I'm thinking he's not a card-carrying member of Team Richard. So will he actually choose Brett? Good gravy, Marie! I'm having a spell right along with Brett! I don't blame her for feeling a bit queasy - she hasn't been called on since episode 1071! That's a long time! (Even so, she's still the second-most called-on H/H celeb, having now been selected two times more than Charles, counting today. Speaking of a long time, it's been ages since Richard has sat out two H/H questions in a row! (Betty played the prior question in 1205.) In fact, I had to go back to episodes 1096 and 1097 to find the most recent time Richard wasn't called on twice in a row - Fannie played those two questions. Stats: Brett last played in 1071 (no match), 1037 (match), 982 (match), 858 (no match) 854 (match), 818 (match), and before that in 804 (no match). She's matched 11 out of her 20 most recent attempts (55.0%), which goes all the way back to episode 641. Overall, she's matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%). For the sake of comparison: Patti Deutsch has matched 1 of her 2 attempts (50%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Richard has matched 356 of his 840 attempts (42.4%), and Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%). Arlene has answered one H/H question, without achieving a match. Dick Martin has yet to answer a head-to-head question. *Today's H/H question: "Vincent________"* (This sounds like one of those coin-flip questions. Either Price or Van Gogh. I can't think of a competitive third choice. If this were today, I'd say Van Gogh. But for 1978, I'll go with Vincent Price.) Our new champ looks like he's already decided. Brett looks like she might have a stroke. (She really takes the H/H ultra seriously.) She writes. It's definitely two words: Van Gogh is my guess. She looks over at Charles's suggestion then back at her own answer with a critical expression. She ponders two seconds, mouths "thank you" (to Charles) and writes a new answer. Now she's cogitating over the two cards. She chooses one and slips it in the slot. (The camera cut back to Gene and the contestant while she was pondering, so I couldn't see which card she ultimately selected.) Wow, this is dramatic today! I love it! No hesitation from our champion. "Price." He sounds confident too. The audience definitely approves. I paused the video at 11:04. Brett's expression looks terse. I can't quite tell if she's really upset or just trying to put on a poker face. Something about her lower lip tells me that she did match. Also, I notice Dick Martin's hand tossing his suggestion (which I'm not sure Brett even saw) into the trash. It seems to be facing the camera, but the resolution is too poor for me to read it. Brett is acting (?) like she didn't match. The fact that she's dragging it out means she did match! But she does her fake-out anyway... Yes, she did decide to answer "Price"! Brett scores her 31st H/H match today. (And she moves above Richard on the leader board yet again.) ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 matches in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (20 matches in 40 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 matches in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 matches in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts). Brett - 43.1% (31 matches in 72 attempts). Richard - 42.4% (356 matches in 840 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1206, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
Food for thought: Richard bought Arlene’s book. Gene wanted to be given an autographed copy. Also appreciate Richard’s take that it’s classy and free of “nasty things.”
That diamond heart necklace that Miss Francis always wore was obviously a special one. Just saw a 1953 episode of What's my Line and she was wearing it then as well. UPDATE: just read that the necklace was gift from her second husband and she did indeed wear almost constantly for about 40 years until 1988 when she was mugged in NYC and robbed of the necklace.
Aww. Elizabeth Montgomery wore a diamond heart necklace on almost every episode of Bewitched. It was from her husband William Asher who later married Joyce Buillifant, I think in the summer of 77.
I wonder how they handled this prize. Maybe they sent a gift certificate. But what if the person didn't live near a Kinney shoe store? I just looked it up and Footlocker is a subsidiary of Kinney. That's interesting.
I don’t know for sure, but a few episodes ago when someone picked Betty, someone posted that it had been 200 episodes since someone other than Richard was picked.
This is one of the few times Patti actually had the most logical answer for a question. I honestly thought "Columbo" would've been the definitive answer for the head Kojak was shaving.
I thought of Farrah Fawcett. This felt like one of those truly wide-open questions where 100 different answers would both make sense and be funny. Walter Conrkite, Maude, Johnny Carson, Donny & Marie, Sonny & Cher, etc. etc.
I got stuck on Yul Brynner as he was the only other bald celebrity I could think of from that era. Surprised Dick was the only one. "Gentle Ben" was pretty funny, though.
YAAAAAAY :) people are starting to come to their senses now. Yesterday a win with betty and today a win with Brett. I guess they're FIALLY done losing with saint Richard
Al had Charles to thank for the big money match. Brett wrote "Van Gogh" at first and only changed it to "Price" after Charles showed her how he would have responded.
The otherwise well-informed Gene Rayburn made a mistake! Richard Strauss didn't compose waltzes. The austrian Strauß-family were composers of waltz. Richard Strauss belonged to a german family of musicians and was composing different music.
Charles, I thought you said that when Gene worn the grey or green suits you knew they were in trouble.. ;0) ROFL!! Love ya Charles! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Patti! ;0)
Because she made that comment about deporting Dick's wife Dolly, I looked her up. Dolly was British. Interestingly they were married in 71 and divorced in 74. Then remarried in 78 and stayed together til he passed away. She's still alive. He was 22 years older than her.
Arlene hosted Blind Date on radio and the critics branded her as too forward and borderline risqué. Of course, it was a hit for years, transitioned to TV with Arlene again as host. She has never been afraid of being a direct and friendly broadcaster. You must be one of those who preferred the tamer 1960s version. It too pushed the boundaries of taste with double entendres and was able to get itself "un-canceled" in the process. Lke this version, Dick DeBartolo wrote those questions.

It’s been a long time since Arlene Francis last appeared on “Match Game.”
Last appearance was Match Game 76 episodes 651-655.
Yes. And The camera caught a shot of Arlene sharing a cigarette with Richard. Gene made a comment about it.
@crissrudd4554 wrong: she was on match game 77 episodes 951-955.
Richard didn't look too happy. The last game he said he was not well and he gave up. As a answer. I wonder if he was going through something.🥺. Vee J
