I think you shouldn't see the break-in as too big a science either. I was at the BMW motorcycle factory for my work and when the motorcycles are tested after assembly, it is done under full load. Before anyone has even sat on their new motorcycle, the motorcycle has already seen maximum engine speed. A new engine is always a source of error and the manufacturer simply wants to avoid that an engine fails at 10,000 rpm and 200 km/h and kills its owner. Break-in is not pointless, but it should not be overrated either. Alex keep up the good work and I'm super excited about the cannonball, it's a shame that there is nothing comparable for Europe.
Just a point of clarification: I had good luck with the Dr.Pulley variator in my PCX150 for the first 10K miles. It wasnt until about 1K miles into the Cannonball ride that it started to self-destruct. The rear torque drive was malfunctioning (binding and not expanding properly), so I think that was increasing the stress and wear on the Dr.Pulley variator bushing. This was quickly evident when I replaced the Dr.P variator with an identical unit on Day 3, and it self-destructed in under 500 miles. I might try the Dr.P variator again in 2025, but I will definitely take the full OEM drive components with me as a backup plan. I think the most reliable combination will be the OEM variator with the Dr.P 13g slider weights. That will give best of both worlds (lower RPM and slightly increased top speed) while maintaining near OEM reliability. One more point to consider with the Dr.P sliders: the slider ramp profile allows the use of lighter weights for acceleration while still allowing higher top speeds (higher belt extension). The OEM PCX150 rollers are 17g, but the optimum Dr.P slider weight is 12-14g. Cheers, and good luck with the variator tuning! 😉👍 --QM
Very thoughtful to show liter, kilometer, Celsius conversions for “us westerners”. Enlightening Vaseline variator lube with Moto oil use & updates. Great discussion with “us” as you ride, Alex. Carry on. Best, Rola (Oregon / USA).
I very much appreciate your content Alex, I have been so inspired, I just put a deposit down on a new Yamaha Xmax. Merry Christmas to you and the family
Hi Alex, about the shake you have on the front week, I had something similar on my Burgman 400 and the problem was the phone mounted on the handlebar (like yours) getting the wind buffeting from the screen. Moving it a bit inwards solved the issue. Maybe not the same for you, but very easy to try!
You could use an old Landrover trick to get heat in the engine in winter - restrict scooter air intake with piece of cardboard 😂👍 Obvs on LR the card goes in front of radiator but you get the idea. Maybe plastic food container lid with holes drilled in?
I have the same issue with my Jet 14 200, I think it has the same engine as Donnie. My top speed is even lower than Donnie’s, I have only been above 100kph on a downhill 😊. But she is still my favourite bike to ride. I choose her 9 times out of 10 when I go riding. (My CityCom feeling neglected, Im sure) I look forward to seeing what you come up with, with regards to changing the variator.
It's called Torque Pro for android, if you have apple search for OBD 2 apps in the play store. They will most likely work with such a Bluetooth adapter. Usually when you buy an adapter from aliexpress they also recommend what app to use in the product description.
Hi Alex, I have a few questions about variators. Watching Donnie accelerate up to 80km at 6800 rpm, Do you know what revs David sits at while accelerating up to 80 km? And are Sym variators interchangeable? If so, could you fit an ADX 125 variator to Donnie?
Good morning Alex what's your set up on donni tec wise on your handle bars , I currently only have quad lock and a few speedometer apps on my 23 ultra , heated grips . But what app are you using on your phone and what's the airplay device you have set up ? My battery drains just by having the grips on so do you have an extra battery running for your devices ? Absolutely love your set up. I'm only on a 125 sym jet x .
don't put another variator just edit your original one I have a sym joymax 125 top speed was 110kmh revlimiter after tuning 130kmh still not touching the revlimiter

It would be nice to have an European cannonball, it's such a shame nobody has thought about organizing one :(

Good to know about the weights my scoot standard has 14.5 so I think I might order 12 and 14 if you say that's the case, to test them out.

Excellent vlog & some great info & food for thought regarding variator functionality. Always a pleasure joining you on your travels. 🙏👍

I hope you have a really lovely Christmas and New Year with your family. Stay safe
I watch it until the end❤😊

That's actually not a bad idea although I would have to do something to partially block the fan.

Dr pulley over range variators are designed for lowering rpm at high speed, at least that's what they say on their website.

Overrange variator, thats what I want to buy in my Jet X 169cc.
You will see it tested on my channel and for your scoot it's the same model as for mine.
@ Thats whatI want, and please share all parts with me.
Keep it up Alex, good content as always!

Most Honda scooters use 10W30 in the transmission. I hope the school play was good!
The play was awesome 😁
nice info on air cooled engines. what app fo you ue for the ODB2 data?

What happened to Rattie?
🙏🇹🇭
He's curently on my desk, he will defenetly be joining me for the Cannonball 😁

What do you mean edit, like take a dremel to it and grind some material away so the rolls can push it further in?
