Perfect edit of this character, I always liked Shirley I thought all of the siblings were written well. I think a lot of people disliked her because she wasn’t as flashy as the other characters. Everyone loved Theo because she was probably the most exciting and she had powers, Luke because they felt bad for him and he was always a sweet sensitive guy, Nellie because she was the glue of her family and cared so deeply for each of them, and Steve kinda seemed like the main character a lot focused on him and his growth. But Shirley is the most realistic view on grief and she was very human and had a lot of negative traits. People like to view characters as more exciting versions of themselves and Shirley would just be real. Which is why I loved her. You did this character justice.
I completely agree with you. Shirl and Steve in particular showed the ugliest sides of trauma and you never want to see yourself in the "ugly", flawed characters because it'd as if you're admitting that you'd make the same mistakes and behave in the same questionable ways. But I love realism and I love flaws and characters that are so imperfect they truly sound and look like human beings.
Shirley is definitely a solid character. I personally don't care for her because that type of person irks me in real life. But, this video is phenomenal at showcasing her character and personality! I love it!
Honestly, I wanted to punch all of them, except for Hugh and Nell. Luke was a bit better, since he was legitimately trying to heal and get better, but he still made Nell buy him heroine. He didn't even consider how that could have affected Nell, or even if it would have consequences for her. What if there had been an undercover cop trying to make a bust? She could have been collateral, and he didn't even consider it. he just wanted his fix. Shirley was a hypocrite, and stubborn to the point of it being idiotic. Yes, Theo shouldn't have, under any circumstance, kissed her husband, but what Shirley did was worse than just a simple kiss. And then she has the gall to be angry at them, without telling her husband what she had done? As for Steve's money, well, yeah it sucks that Steve wrote about them like they were sideshow freaks, but still, her business was in the red, it wasn't getting better, and she had two children to think about. She should have just sucked it up, and gotten the check, because like Theo said, it was good money, money that saved their business and could help pay for the kid's schooling. But no, she wanted to stay stubborn and prideful, even if her family was suffering. I liked Theo a little more, but seriously, the whole thing with her powers? As cool as they were, it made the show feel a little too Stephen King, and that's not what it was supposed to be. If I could reach through my screen and smack Steve, I would be so, so happy. Now this is a hypocrite. He doesn't believe in ghosts, but he writes about supposedly haunted houses and pretends like he believes. He calls his family crazy, but then he makes a good profit off of that supposed madness in his big tell-all book. He was pissed at his dad for withholding information, but then he has no problems keeping his vasectomy from his wife, leaving her to wonder and worry and fret over why she couldn't have any bouncing bundles of joy. Everything that Nell said about him was right. he wasn't a very good big brother.
I liked her a lot. She was flawed. Made mistakes. Dealt with her own set of trauma. Everyone was always kind of unfairly on her case given how much she'd helped all of them. Her rougher personality just sort of put off some of her family and so it is expected that it puts some audience off too. However, I thought she was really good underneath it all and always showed up eventually to do the right thing. Owned her flaws and mistakes by the end. Was a good sister/daughter/wife/mother at the end of the day. Great character and great actress. Plus, the boob punch was legendary XD

I have mixed feelings about her. She pissed me off when she treated Kevin like shit when she thought that he and Theo kissed and took the blood money from Steven even though she knew that she had an affair and lied to Kevin for years.
pennywise she was simply self-reflecting. When one has something that they dislike about themselves they expose it or place it onto someone else to avoid the guilty feeling.
Shirley didn’t stand out to me much until she decided to take on her sisters funeral herself. And in that moment I knew that she was relatable in ways I didn’t think to look for when I related to the other siblings. This is an amazing tribute and pushed my liking of the character more when I wasn’t overally fond of her at first.
I always said, from chapter one till end, I understood her, cause it was difficult for her since she felt she had to be the one to keep her siblings together, acted in such selfish ways just because she thought she could take care of everything and she'll manage to be okay with it, but she wasn't and I understand the pain she felt when she had to see her sister right there dead couldn't be described

This series had me more than once call my wayward sibling to see if they were ok. Hearing Luke and Nell say things like No body believes me, and you couldn't see me hits. Shirley represents the one who takes control and the fixer. I don't think people wanted to see that part of themselves in this but here she is.
She's the most human character in the show, and one of the most unique too. Everyone has seen the girlboss Theo trope, the sweet but broken Nell trope etc., but I feel like Shirley breaks apart from these saturated archetypes and stands on her own as a character who's just as flawed as all others, but whose flaws are not "likeable", and to me that's good, because if you're trying to find the good side on a character's bad side, then you're really just trying to make them one-dimensional and easy to digest.
Does anyone else think it would work better with Theo and Shirley switched around? I suppose it's obvious in Theo "clenched fist with hair" But Shirley 'fixing' the bodies, and keeping herself so closely interacting with death seems like it works with bargaining. Like, as long as she can keep things on her terms to some degree then she can live with it.

Just finished the series, and was happy to see a video like this. Usually it's characters like Nell or Theo that are my favorites, but those moments where you got a glimpse of what Shirley was going through (Morgue scene and the Casket falling scene to name a couple) really made me understand and love her character

After getting really emotional watching this show, the fact their coming out with a season 2 called Haunting of Bly manor is probably gonna scare the shit out of me and also make me cry again
She didn't believe or want to know what the reality was around her. She escaped the reality around her and made others feel like what they believed in were false. I was not a fan of her because of those facts.
God I hope they come back to these characters one day. Hill House Characters we’re so fantastic and the flashback cuts were perfect…. Bly Manor was great too, but these characters were a vibe and the dynamic between them all was amazing

This literary book has mommy issues all over it. Shirley Jackson is a genius for writing it but its an intense read just like the show. LOVED IT the haunting of bly manor from Flannigan is fucking incredible also.
