  • The Winter Park Sink Hole, Then and Now
Before May 1981, near the corner of Denning Drive and Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park, Florida, there was a house, a public pool, some businesses, and Comstock Avenue. In May 1981, that all ended up in the bottom of a giant sinkhole.
Later, that sinkhole filled with water and is now Lake Rose. In this video, I compare the sinkhole from 42 years ago with present-day Winter Park.

I was at work when people were coming in talking about this. I was 17. My friend and I went there that night, very late, and someone (a police officer, I think) who was standing guard at the impromptu fence let us stand on the edge of the hole. There was no one else there at he time. We were so excited.

I was working a couple of blocks away and got to see it starting to swallow everything. It was a fun party atmosphere and we camped out a couple of nights.

I used to walk from Winter Park Junior High School, now 9th grade center, to a baseball field on Denning for practice. It was next to the sinkhole just beyond the pool.

Hey man! I'm working on a video about the biggest sinkholes and was wondering if I could use some of this footage when discussing the Winter Park sinkhole? You'd get credit on screen and a link in the description! Let me know :)

I don't think you can see the cars anymore. They were gone, gone almost right away. At least one was and a second was close behind. We didn't think they'd get any out, at the time. At one point they said they didn't even know where the bottom was on that small center. Fairbanks Ave, where the dealership was, was shut down. It was a circus. All of that is very close to major thoroughfares, and was even in 1981. Denning was just a small mixed use area with offices, houses and apartments. Fairbanks and Mills Ave (within a few blocks) is solid traffic and businesses.

That’s a clay drainage pipe . It’s obviously leaking and created a small void , NOT A SINKHOLE . Swimming pool probably caused the first hole to occur.
