@@willjohnson1602 There's more to popularity than being good at something. All of JJs movie directing has been part of franchises with already built fanbases. Other than super 8. So people were going to see them regardless. (And they have caused division) All he has to be is baseline competent.
@@willjohnson1602 I won't deny that JJ is a good director, but as for storytelling, it's best to leave that for people with actual talent in that field. There is a big difference in visualising a script and making the script from scratch, and Abrams just doesn't have that talent
Yeah this is nonsense, JJ Abrams is a good producer but an awful writer. Star Trek was good because he didn't write it, Star Wars was awful because he did write it.
People are missing how sinister this clip actually is. He was saying this to try to get people who hated EP.7 to come see EP.9 alluding to that he agreed they messed up 7 and they think 9 is better. Why is it necessary to revisit the old when making the seventh movie in a franchise? Can you just respect the audience’s intelligence? At least the prequels didn’t hold your hand and actually had a different theme than the OT
Exactly. The sequels didn't have to have a direct parallel with the OT in order to "kick things off with the new" I'm paraphrasing. But the sequels logically must start with a fresh and new conflict. After the empire is disbanded and nearly destroyed. After the final death star has been blown up. After the battle of endor. After the new republic takes its place to formulate and establish itself. It's only logical that the next three films would have characters who came from completely different backgrounds than the other hero's we've seen, for example maybe we don't get a Jedi hero figure coming from a sand planet maybe we get a Jedi hero figure who comes from a forest planet or what have you. And the conflict not to be fighting a rebranded empire that's just as strong as the old empire. Instead of that maybe the conflict is to prevent another empire starting somewhere else in the Galaxy from following in the footsteps of palpatines empire. There's so many options especially when you consider that starwars, as described by Lucas, was created to retell old myths in a new way. Old myths of Hinduism, plains Indians, Buddhism, the Bible, paradise lost, etc. When you consider that starwars uses standard mythological figures and structure, and takes pieces from all of these great works from human history and human culture. They had so many different options for continuing into the sequel era. But instead they gave J.J and Rian total creative control, if not mostly, and they went on a fan fiction contest.
Anthony Saman that was tough to read with that writing and grammar, but I think I agree with what you’re saying for the most part. Without putting too much thought into how each of them fit into the larger story arcs and just trying to take them in as single films, I still enjoyed RoS and TFA significantly more than TLJ even if it was painfully obvious they were just redoing stuff from the original trilogy.
I worked on the set of space jam 2. At the time, the previous director was let go and they had to bring in new crew members to reshoot the movie. Well, one of the crew members was a camera operator who worked on the set of The Rise of Skywalker before the movie had come out. Like many of you, I was let down by the last jedi, but being the curious Star Wars nerd I was, asked him to tell me any details about the movie. The only thing he could tell me is that J.J. Abrams said “this is the best movie I’ve ever made and that the movie would be really good.” My eyes widened and I couldn’t believe my ears. Now after seeing the movie, I don’t know what this camera operator guy was talking about. 😂
No disrespectim just a little confused you said the camera operator told you what JJ Abrams said and after you saw the movie "I dont know what this camera operator guy was talking about" as if it was the camera mans opinion shouldnt it be more aimd at JJ Abrams not the camera guy like "I can't believe the director said that to the camera operator after directing such a bad movie." He's not a great filmmaker but he's not as terrible as Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker were. He tried to make his own movie with the Star Trek reboots. Even if they were mindless. The set-up of Force Awakens makes it pretty obvious that Kathleen Kennedy decided to interfere heavily with the process, with zero knowledge or respect for writing, and throw out George Lucas's outline and just do the same movie withawful, amateurish elements like a self-insert Mary Sue as the main character.
As long as Disney and Kathleen Kennedy don't actually physically change any of the movies, we'll still have a solid trilogy, an ok trilogy, and an abomination. And they only way that can be ruined is in the hands of an audience that likes bad movies and is more vocal than other people. Honestly, there's really nothing i like about the sequels. I'm not sure i can hate them, but i don't think they're good movies. But i feel bad for people who only saw the bad sequels and judge the rest of the series on those few hours of film, because there's definitely much better parts of this saga that Disney has deterred people away from watching. The hype for this trilogy was real. It shouldn't have failed at all, Disney was a gigantic company that had every resource at their disposal yet they still messed it up. It's so sad that we got a trilogy that instead divided the fan base and has almost everyone from the cast and crew dislike it.
It changed the way people view Hollywood in general. Nobody thinks big studios are even trying to make good movies anymore, and apparently big studios are more or less admitting that themselves now.
@@redrick8900 You and I both know good movies do not come out at nearly the same clip as they used to, especially ones made by major studios who can spend big bucks. Are there still good movies? Of course there are. But for every decent movie it seems like there’s a dozen rehashed superhero movies or a remake of a beloved kids movie from the 80s or 90s that falls completely flat. Star Wars is the most glaring example, but ultimately the franchise under Disney is the result of a larger problem.
I thought you actually edited it to make JJ say that in the video, but HE SAYS IT HIMSELF!!!! One of the greatest subversion of expectations I have ever seen in a UA-cam video!
"Re-visit the old in order to start and tell the new" is literally nothing but a P.R. phrase designed to justify the artistically bankrupt decisions made on The Force Awakens. It doesn't actually mean anything. The real reason they did what they did is because aping the old movies was seen as a more commercial approach. Bob Iger all but admits this in his book, and it's the reason Lucas was so disgusted by the film and decided to walk away from the process.
I will repeat this: JJ Abrams is not a director, screenwriter or a storyteller. He is a marketer. I can’t honestly comprehend how this hack is still in demand.
Liam Hardy this might come dry soon as well... so hopefully we will not see it anywhere or back to his shitty mystery box filled failed franchise like cloverfield
Perhaps Disney wanted it done and said "if it's not you, it's just gonna be somebody else" then they opened the billion dollar briefcase, because no heart was put into these movies, just like how Kevin Smith never cared for He-man, why are these people doing this if they don't care about the subject matter? it's all money.
^ a fan theory doesn’t redeem a character and a fan theory like Darth Jar Jar was never great, it just relied on absurdity and shock value. If they really pulled off Darth Jar Jar everyone would hate it. I liked Jar Jar anyway though - as someone who watched all the Star Wars films without bias for the first time a few months back. Jar Jar wasn’t great or a good character, but I think he worked well as a comic relief foil to the wise Obi Wan and Qui Jon especially considering TPM was a *kids movie* Really the Ewoks were more annoying since they delivered no dialogue and had no purpose other than to clearly sell merch, and characters like Rose were also worse. Jar Jar’s overhated though because diehard Star Wars fans are just nerdy manchilds who always can’t deal in anything over than hyperboles.
Brittlespy How does it take an angry manchild to recognise diehard Star Wars fans are angry manchildren? He knows he's making shit, he's not thinking he's making art, or telling a story. He's making money, and that's it. For all his efforts to copy people like Spielberg, he doesn't understand jack about making movies, and none of his will be remembered after he's gone. Spielberg's films will stand the test of time though. As much as people hated the prequels at the time, people can seem to agree that they at least were consistent and told a coherent story, Lucas may not be good at crafting dialogue or directing, but he knew how to tell a story. The only way this sequel trilogy could have worked is if JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson stayed far away from writing duties, and used the stories that Lucas had in mind for the sequels, but had other people direct them, and refine the small details like characterization.
The prequels at least expanded upon the lore and gave insight onto the flaws on the jedi order and what led to its inevitable demise. The sequel trilogy couldn't even follow a single plot point throughout the course of the 3 films. And added nothing to thr Star Wars universe.

He was probably the "safe" choice for directing a new Star Wars movie, and Disney knew this. They wanted someone who could technically make a competent film, take almost no risks, and rely on nostalgia to trick the audience into thinking the movie is more emotionally meaningful than it is. That's J.J. to a t. Hell, he had already done literally the same exact thing with Star Trek.
JJ gets off on making badly written good looking movies that the masses will love while the hardcore fans spaz out in uncontrollable rage. He must have been bullied by nerds in high school.
@@samuelbaisden1194 now I think in this conversation the question is. Just because they enjoy it does it mean they think it's good? Anthony Saman - that’s an important distinction to make. I think hardcore fans (and I consider myself one) realize that even if the new movies are controversial, they are enjoyable and I’m happy to pay for a ticket or two if it keeps the franchise relevant. I would also add that “good” is very subjective, especially considering that Star Wars has always been campy and a little silly at times.
It’s not plagiarism because Disney owns Star Wars and even if they didn’t just cause things are similar doesn’t mean they’re the same and therefore not plagiarism

Not exactly. Prequels had ideas but the execution of them was terrible. Sequels don't really have new ideas or even a plan (they might've had a plan, but Johnson tried something that didn't eventually worked out), which results in so many inconsistencies. Lilix Pictures dude I was exaggerating 😂 but I agree that the OG trilogy can't be topped (for now). Empire alone is one of the best movies ever made IMO.
The prequels are great. Watching them after the new trilogy honestly does make them look way better. There's some problems here and there, but overall, they feel like star wars, feel like canon, are far more epic, and they are an order of magnitude greater in overall quality.
Zack mack They're not really great in my opinion. But the prequels have iconic moments like Maul vs Obi Wan and Quigon, Pod-racing, Anakin vs Obi Wan, etc. For me, what brings them down is how the story of Anakin unfolds from being a Jedi to then turning into Vader. They made the most badass Sith look like a whiny bitch before he was in the suit. The sequel trilogy also has a similar trait when they ruined Luke and made him look a grumpy old man.
I disliked the movie but hadn't given up on the characters just yet. It wasn't until the Mark Hamill interviews that I got a funny gut feeling not to see the Last Jedi. Thank you, Mark Hamill.
Or they could have hired competent and creative people to build a worthy "new beginning" to one of history's most beloved franchises; instead we get hermit anti-luke and wonder woman played by the human mannequin. GG Disney. I don't know how they managed to do worse than most people could have if they put every shred of effort into running the franchise into the ground.
“I wanted to revisit the old to start and tell the new.” The problem is that we didn’t get the new. At the time I think we all accepted the rehash because it was just to “start things up right”. Cmon it wasnt EXACTLY THE SAME. Rise of Skywalker was repetetive tho.
O Shap JJ Abrams questions your sanity 😆

TLJ tried something very different, perhaps too different, and then Rise didn’t find anything else than to do than revert back to copying the old. When you look at the big picture and where it leaves the world... it feels kinda pointless, except now all the OGs are dead and buried.
The Last Jedi is the best film of this trilogy exactly because it tried something different.

JJs mystery box: a good question for another time.
That's the JJ method: weaponize nostalgia and pray. They should've have RJ direct all 3 sequels.

BTW... Have you ever noticed how much J J Abrams resembles Leisure Suit Larry?
JJ Abrams falls into this category for me of, clearly a capable director who should have no say in the writing of the story he's directing. Zack Snyder falls in that same category.
JJ's that dad that starts a scary story for his kids and has no idea where it's going whatsoever but then he gets in bed with his wife and goes on a 30 minute diatribe about how and why he paced and plotted the story the way he did and how he wanted to touch on nostalgia while also introducing something fresh to his audience and his wife goes "JJ, shut the fuck up" and he goes "Okay. Night."
That was perfect. If you ever get a chance and are a glutton for pain, try to watch his TED talks on mystery boxes if you haven't already. I can't believe this guy made a lecture about creating mystery for the sake of mystery. And that's not the worse thing about it. It is one of the most incomprehensible speeches I've ever watched. After seeing how anxious he is in real life, I could only imagine his anxiety on set of star wars. It was like fans were holding him hostage on set.
Yes, and at the time people celebrated, let's not forget. It was only thanks to The Last Jedi that "some" people started to see The Farce Awakens for what it was: a farce. An empty, meaningless movie with an original trilogy skin. A nostalgia ad. An insult to George Lucas, who put story, vision and originality first.
I cannot see the people who like TFA as fans of star wars. If you care at all about the story and TFA's lore breaking and regression of both story and characters doesn't bother you then you are not really a fan.
@@AIex3199 I see them as superficial fans (I'm generalizing of course). They like the X-wings and TIE fighters, the original trilogy skin. But like the Maker himself said, Star Wars is not about spaceships. There's more to it than that. And it's that "more" that sticks and makes it timeless. It's also what's missing from this farce of a trilogy.
I was one of the few who didn't like The Force Awakens from the first time I saw it. Now, a lot of people are seeing TFA for what it is. On a related note, I don't like The Mandalorian. I wonder how long it'll take before others catch on. lol
LusoTuber I knew force awakens was trash the second I finished watching it. I was utterly confused at the time why people were praising it so much. I’m glad people realize how bad it is now
@@G360LIVE Some of us sheep are just a little smarter than the rest of the flock. Or perhaps better at sensing future trouble spots when they're still small. Everything that has gone wrong with this trilogy was set in motion by TFA. Both onscreen and offscreen (in terms of J.J.'s clear lack of concern about interesting and believable world building). I also am not impressed by the Mandalorian. It seems tired and boring. I think I'm done with Star Wars for good now, so long as Disney is in charge of it. The only good thing they did with the property was Rogue One (and even it had a weak first half and overall was nothing groundbreaking).
Ummm...start the new? Rise of Skywalker’s entire finale was a remake of Return of the Jedi.
No not really

@@Ale-dd3ek * The worst elements from Dark Empire. Didnt have any of the cool stuff like Palpatine's force storm or Luke dueling a young Emperor.
Force Awakens was the best of the triology
A smart way to say that he didn't had the hands on this movie and Disney was the last decisionner on what would be on the screen.
I just took a sweet dump in Abrams mysterbox - cant wait till he's sees it - well, he'll smell it first.
It will be the first time something is actually in it.
I'm one of the people who were immediately out after I saw TFA. It made almost everything that happened in IV-VI pointless. I watched TLJ for the first time on Netflix recently and actually preferred it to TFA. Still a horrible Star Wars movie, but at least Rian tried to do something original. Really confusing to me how people could have problems with TLJ or the prequel trilogy, but be ok with TFA.
Indeed, what I liked best about TLJ was that Rian had as low a regard for TFA and its terrible characters and setup as I did. It was mildly amusing to watch a film I hated get deconstructed. Even JJ didn't/doesn't seem to have much regard for TFA universe! And it shows in what he has produced.
I was done with Disney star wars as soon as a non force trained girl defeated a trained force user who was next in line to be a sith lord.. nah
I actually feel like episode 9 is better than 8 and even 7. But I still like the prequels more.
@@kazzykaioken8873 It just happens in stories though: special people show up & defeat the "bad guys" or become the next great enemy. Maybe it was badly executed but the base principle isn't anything new or inherently bad. *If* your issue lies with gender then that's a ridiculous problem to have.
@@kazzykaioken8873I didn't even make it that far. I was off-put when a non force trained girl used a Jedi mind trick to escape capture, then bored for an hour, then walked out when they announced they were going to blow up a third death star. Haven't seen any Disney movie since.
Well, there you have it. From the man himself. This should settle all debates between those who loved it and those who hated it!!
JJ Abrams thinks I am insane...but he is the one who directed Rise of Skywalker..,
JJ raped Luke Skywalker and somehow Palpatine survived.
Insanity is liking his movies.... Oh wait.
Yeah they clearly wanted to reboot A New Hope, they weren't fooling anybody. That was what fans wanted. Back then people fuckin hated the prequels and wanted Star Wars to move as far away from the prequels as possible. The whole marketing of Force Awakens was based around how it's so similar to the sequels and how much it has nothing to do with the prequels. it's funny, Disney did so bad that now people actually appreciate the prequels...
I hope he will find a profession in life, soon.
"I took your money but I feel just awful about it"

Thank you Abrams for killing the main saga, you did it!
The Joe Biden of cinema
He’s trying to get rid of the haters by going “yeah I hate it too”
How on Earth did I only find out about this video, yesterday?
Everything new should enrich the Original Trilogy not mimic, erase or supplant it. Rogue One, The Mandalorian, The Prequels, they all enrich our experience of the Original Trilogy when we revisit it. Rogue One makes A New Hope even more impactful, The Mandalorian and the BoBF add more context to Boba Fett and his warrior tradition. The prequels and the Kenobi series provide a powerful bridge between the fall of Anakin and the rise of Darth Vader. With the sequels I really scratch my head and wonder what was the point?

@@RobotPizzaMan How is he putting it on a pedestal by calling out a dude who says you can't even ENJOY TROS. Dane Vlarien skywalker was infinitely more interesting than the nostalgia-bait trite algorithmic HORSESHIT that was force awakens. Neither are good movies but skywalker was at least interesting to watch.
I enjoyed mostly despite the flawwed plot and bad scenes. So does that mean I’m just a terrible person for liking a film that 90% of the public hate. Star Wars has fallen apart, Disney has destroyed so much of its greatness and despite other great films coming in trying to save it like Rouge one and the Mandolorian it can’t repair the damage. Nowadays it’s popular to dislike new Star Wars movies cause most people never expect them to be good at the slightest. JJ did a better job at doing work for the new trilogy then Rian I will say. TLJ screwed everything over that JJ was trying to make for the trilogy and after TLJ JJ was left to work with shit left by Rian.
A good director is able to recognize where he went wrong.
Doesn't make him a good director if he keeps repeating the same mistakes
My brother in Christ, you MADE the movie!!
Plot twist: Rían Johnson is actually the hero of the sequel trilogy for leading the fan rebellion against the Evil Disney Empire
Maybe Ana de Armas's character in Knives Out is an analogy to him with Disney. I am beginning to think he was a complete troll and purposely tanked it 😂.
When I saw The Force Awakens for the first time, I just whispered to myself, "What the fuck". They didn't even bother to hide they straight ripped A New Hope, it lowered my enjoyment considerably until Luke showed up. I saw it a few more times out of pure adrenaline.
