Can't wait for the next banned/restricted announcement: "We have noticed The One Ring is a powerful roll filler in many decks, and has created some new decks, such as the popular Colorless Paradox Engine deck. In response to that decks power and popularity we feel we need to curve the decks power, so we are banning Coldsteel Heart in Historic."
I was thinking the same thing - I figure they would restrict Minds stone to 1.

The One Rign Paradox is thus: "If there is only one ring, how have I drawn 4 of them?"
It represents a new person getting the ring, hence the corruption/burden being reset.
You could add Mirror Box, which negates the legend rule for permanents you control. Et voila: Get multiple rings online to draw your deck even faster.

Cards in hand in MTG seem to pretty much be thoughts and ideas of what spells you could cast. Just looks at cards like Thought Erasure, Go Blank, or Radical Idea. It's perfectly reasonable to think about summoning the one ring 4 times. The real paradox is when you have Mirror Box and actually play multiple.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I kinda miss reckoner bankbuster. At least it only drew you 3 cards and didn't fog you for a turn
If you want to play this deck yourself try putting a darksteel citadel in the sideboard to fetch with Karn. It’s super helpful to have an extra land drop that you can get from the sideboard and lets you get a bit greedier in some hands/turns.
He also needed a zero drop artifact for turns like in the last game where he just needed something to untap all the lands.

another tip with this deck: if you have ring, engine, and forge, you can cast a spell form your library with forge and hold full control, then respond to the engine trigger by tapping the ring, that way you decrease your chances of whiffing by drawing too many lands.

Really excited for this. So glad someone is finally brave enough to build a deck around The One Ring. I never thought we'd see it played!
The main reason to not craft the deck, is not that it's gonna have a low win rate per wildcard, but that it might get one of its crucial pieces emergency banned.
the one ring will be around for a while. in a perfect world where wotc only cared about competitive fairness it would be emergency banned but its the flagship card of their lotr set and it would be financially stupid for them to ban it before the next set comes out

I have another combo just like this: Hazoret's Monument + Birgi, God of Storytelling + Grinning Ignus + Aetherflux Reservoir.
1. Your deck has to have a lot of 1 CMC cantrips (Crash Through, Warlord's Fury, etc) to filter your deck out and get some consistency. Make sure you can play a land every turn.
2. Turn 3: play land, cast Monument.
3. Turn 4: play land. Then:
a. Cast Birgi, monument triggers, draw and discard.
b. Cast Grinning Ignus, monument triggers, draw and discard. Birgi will trigger, generating R.
c. Use the R generated by Birgi to activate Ignus ability, return it to hand generate 2R.
d. Repeat b, you'll add 1 colorless to your mana pool each time since the monument reduces the ignus cost by 1.
e. Once you get an Aeterflux Reservoir, keep it on your hand and cast it when you can. Each time you cast Ignus, you'll gain a bunch of life. Once you're at 60, lazer to the face of your opponent.
Grape shot is easier than Aetherflux, lower CMC
@@drewbesteck4512 I know, I have that variant as well, but in historic there are a lot of decks faster than this, so this is really more of an explorer deck, and grapeshot is not legal on that format. This combo generates infinite mana anyways so casting aeterflux is not a big deal... Also, I can't stand alchemy cards, so I avoid formats where those cards are legal xD
EDIT: I just realized the comment reads like I think grape shot is an alchemy card, and it is not... what I meant was that in historic alchemy cards are allowed, and I don't really like playing with them or against them.
The One Ring is huge for this archetype. I've used it before on MTGA, and I recall using some really overcosted artifact which was basically "draw one card". Being able to draw 6 after only playing two spells (and then more after that) is nuts. Especially with getting protection for a turn, in order to go off on the next turn.
Yeah, before you have to try to draw through our deck cracking Hedron Archives and Mind Stones and such and it was pretty easy to fizzle. The One Ring mostly makes it so we never fizzle. Huge, huge upgrade.
Seth, you should consider to go check your problem with keeping one landers... The worst thing is that sometimes it goes OK 😂

I’ve been playing this deck for a while, and if you want to build it, you should absolutely include semblance anvil. Gives the deck so many crazy win lines.
That first match was so sweet...your opponent saw it all coming and was clearly impressed with the combo since he emoted the laughing dragon and the GG as it was going down and also didn't scoop...mad respect to him for sticking around to take that 50 dmg at the end 👏👏👏

23:31 pro tip! If you wanna prevent this from happening , you can hold full control and exile the tol card with the Pizza Oven before the untal trigger resolves. That way, you can look at one extra card and make sure you don't run out of steam
This is the first time i've ever felt this watching Seth play. I actually felt bad for his opportunities. Seth's deck is amazing but it seems to take the fun out of game. The One Ring is bonkers

Why not put a ring in the sideboard to be able to fetch with Karn?
i had that thought too, but i think the rational is that you’d rather have a higher chance of naturally drawing the ring because sometimes you need to play it early game purely for the protection.
Because then you have a lower chance of drawing it from your deck and both the one ring and karn are 4 drops so it might be better to play the one ring on turn 3/4 and then paradox on 4/5 or whatever and combo from there

Yeah, I agree on the "more fun for the opponent" part. Old paradox engine decks had a habit of taking the game clock hostage without the game being clearly decided.
I built this deck, it's so good that even in a ultra grindy UW matchup where all your paradox engines and aehterflux reservoirs get countered, Forsaken monument gains enough life that a buried ruin drawn off of the one ring to get reservoir back just wins at 56 life

I really do think ( and hope) that the one ring will get the ban hammer. People are coming with more ways to just break the modern format, it's warping the entire thing. That alone is a solid basis to get a ban of the chin.

I think it's getting banned in every eternal format except perhaps vintage. Ofc it should have been worded differently, it should at least deal the damage when you draw. Not sure that would be enough though... Independently from that, paradox engine is going to continue to break historic at regular intervals 😂
I do love using the card but it is format bending. I've seen it in so many decks that otherwise wouldn't run this type of card.
This is why I've been seeing this deck so much in lower tiers historic ranked this morning. Its surprisingly well matched against charbelcher.
Since a lot of people are suggesting adding colored cards, it’s worth mentioning that they miss with pizza oven and colored mana weakens Monument. Otherwise, jamming the Acererak combo that uses 75% of the deck would be a no-brainer.

I've been playing this deck for years with mystic forge. I found that splashing red white and blue for urza and enthusiastic mechanaught is worth it. I also run spare supplies, ornithopter of paradise, and one copy of mind's desire in my list. I mostly play out of the karn sideboard and just replaced mystic forge with the one ring.
I would actually recommend against making this deck for one reason; arena balancing. I strongly believe they will adjust The One Ring and that would mean no wild card refunds for the ring and your stuck with 4 paradox engines you used mythic wild cards for and won't get refunds for

I like the idea of combining Ring and Paradox into Rox and calling it Storm Rox since the game plan is throwing a bunch of mana “rox” on the board and storming off with Aetherflux

I've had a Paradox Engine deck for a while. It was made more for fun than competitive since I don't have Karns, Urza's Saga and 'select other expensive cards'. The win conditions were Blue Sun's Zenith, Aetherflux Reservoir and combat damage with Wormcoil, Batterskull, Nettlecyst and Kaldra Compleat. One time I got a turn 4 15/15 Wormcoil with Batterskull and Kaldra Compleat attached. The deck usually fails, but when it goes off, nothing stops it.
The opponent's name @ 15:08 is very funny for french speakers
I played this deck and didn't have as much success. And tips on piloting. One of the hardest bits is knowing what to tutor with Karn
Karn almost always wants to tutor a combo piece (either Paradox Engine or Mystic Forge, depending on what you have on the battlefield and in hand), unless you are about to die, then grabbing removal makes sense. Basically, the goal is to get Paradox Engine, Forge/The One Ring and some mana rocks on the battlefield as soon as you can, and then you win.
Oh, I guess I should also say if you already have the combo Karn gets Aetherflux Reservoir to finish the game.

i think the opponent thought the gates ablaze would kill the guardian idols... since they kind of look and sound like creatures, and u can see them mousing over the idols after they casted it
Used to play this with Mazemind Tome for the card draw and constantly replaying Ancestral Statue to keep the combo going. It was somewhat slow though. One Ring has made it way quicker and pretty oppressive tbh. Unless you have a counter for the Ring or Engine you're screwed

This deck seems really good actually :o. Should we have one copy of The One Ring in the board to give us more virtual copies? Do we have room with the 7 card SB in bo1? Seems key to the deck going off.
Yeah, I've been going back and forth on that. It could be worth playing one in the sideboard. I think we could make room. I also want to add a Tormod's Crypt to the sideboard to have a free spell to find with Karn to start the combo while tapped out.

@@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle What do you mean? The One Ring is actually a playable card, not Sheodred good but def good in the right deck. It gets countered easily but if it sticks it gets you some cards for a little life.

Absolute NUTS. Can't wait to punk my friend with this for lulz. Also with experimenting Pristine Talisman (x2-4 swap for some lands) helped (not that it needs help) with both life gain for faster combo and fizzle.

Seth Meme-or-Dream'ing himself here. If there had been a 0 mana artifact in the side that last game wouldn't have fizzled (possibly). Maybe even an Astral Cornucopia as both a 3 mana manarock or a 0 mana Paradox Engine trigger. Maybe even go for a 2 mana "draw a card" artifact of some kind for the little bit of help it may offer. (Be it a skullbomb or an etb-draw.)
Other than that it's a Paradox Engine deck so ... fun and broken. :)
I have this deck without the one ring basically in historic with the same win cons! Time to add the one ring to it and make it even better and more consistent

I actually did this with a blue shell, using Emry lurker of the loch as an additional engine piece, and the Jace to let me go full Labman. Can toolbox into Aetherflux Reservoir or Door to Nothingness wins too depending on how much you want to troll your opponent.
I wish i had the funds to play this deck! I have a Paradox Engine deck in Pioneer and i love it. I would be in heaven if i could combine it with the One Ring!

I made an Izzet deck very similar to this recently but it uses transplant theorist and mystic forge and rather than paradox engine I just reduce the cost of all of my artefacts to zero with enthusiastic mechanaut, foundry inspector etc
This deck didn't need another new piece lol. Once it goes off you have to just concede. Farewell tho kills this so bad the opponent concedes right away lol
With the old version there was a very small chance you'd fizzle, on the order of 10-15%. So you had to sit through the combo. But with the One Ring that just isn't true anymore, so yeah, now it's safe to concede to

Surgical Extraction type of effects, naming the ring to stop degeneracy is making "The One Ring" prime for the ban wagon. Broken cards are super fun for a bit until Magic stops feeling like Magic.
I think this deck is very strong on ladder, but this won't go to competitive tournaments. bo3 is a killer with so many sideboard options against it that it struggles to answer without severely diluting its combo. I could be wrong though, that was a consistent T4-5 kill and got several wins through hate. Would've loved to see the lost games just to see what it was that this deck lost to the most. Was it aggro? Hate? Not getting the combo? Control decks?
Yeah, I think it gets much worse in best of three where people can sideboard for it. It's great is best of one though, as long as you don't run into Karn/Mono-Green it best basically everything.

Loved watching this deck, so I decided to build it. I know you had success but I'm getting absoutely destroyed with it.... Every deck I play against has so much pressure on the board at turn 3 that unless you have the one ring you don't make it to turn 4, and even after that there's only a single turn left to try survive and again without another one ring you die.

How "The One Ring" should have been worded. "When The One Ring enters the battlefield, you gain protection from everything until your next turn, then put a burden counter on The One Ring. At the beginning of your upkeep, lose life equal to the number of burden counters on The One Ring, then put a burden counter on it. T: Draw cards equal to the number of burden counters on The One Ring."
In every fair situation, this would make The One Ring function almost exactly the same way it already does, and it would prevent the unfair abuse we see in this video.
Adding the clause "You cannot cast spells named "The One Ring"", or "A deck may only contain one copy of The One Ring"", would have fixed it completely.
One thing I wish we had been able to see was this deck against control
Control in Historic is not very good against other matchups, so I'd suspect this is just a favorable metagame for this deck
I very rarely play against control is Bo1 Historic. I think it would be a much bigger concern is best of three, although in best of three I'm not sure the deck would be very good since sideboard answers can wreck it.
I would love to see some land destruction board wipes in this deck to increase the salt factor.
I managed to assemble this combo a few times in my Meria in Historic Brawl, that's GG every time.

This deck also has free Jegantha, just okay karplusan forests and brush lands, tap for colorless for free, and can cast her, as well has cold steel

Something I think a lot of people forget is that this deck was absolutely POSSIBLE before the one ring. It just wasn't nearly as effective since you needed to run 1 or more colors with chromatic orrery. It worked best if you had a jodah the unifier on the field before you cast chromatic orrery to get another thing for free. Just completely go off. Alternatively run it with completed omnath in case you can't finish it off that turn to have doubled mama for your next turn.
I did the same deck with the deck of many things before the one ring just a lot of praying things go right in that version.
I'd add Narset and Sheoldred to "we're getting wrecked by" list
ive been playing this deck for about 2 years minus ring its great
ive been playing this deck since the one ring came out. but i have a wit hes oven/colossus combo where i sac collossus for 2 food then bring it back by saccing the food. infinite casting for aetherflux resiviour. also this deck is super feast or famine. either you stomp or die super fast
more decks like this and people won't jam TOR in every deck. Love it
I've played similar decks in Brawl in the past. Pick any Karn, throw in all the mana rocks and silly combo tools on Earth, and pray you don't face aggro lol. With the ring around now maybe I'll have to check back on that
I am now 5-0 with this deck. I ran into aggro twice. Destroyed it both times.

@Trevendor Actually, I usually only use that phrase for dirty Teferi players. But now that I'm playing this, I don't have my Gaea's Blessings so I may start to hate mill more. Mesmeric Orb is really rough on this deck.
The One Ring is poorly named. It is in literally every deck in every format it's legal in. "Everyone's Ring" is more appropriate until it's banned in every format where we can errata it to "The Banned Ring"
It should limit itself to one copy per deck, and maybe even have text like the old legend rule that there can only be one on the battlefield.

This deck is really good. Needs a few updates though, some of the utility lands dont really do anything. Also boseju is being heavily played, so it should have a couple real basics. Karns sylex is such a nonbow though as it blows up your own mana rocks. Blast zone doesnt really seem to help against anything but wizards maybe.

How about putting in a few Shatterskull Smashing replacing some of the lands? They're extra spells that can get you out of the pinch you found yourself in in the last game.
they're hard to cast (you need two coldsteel heart, or go down a mana with crystal grotto and you aren't likely to have a lot of extra if you're in a pinch), and the land side of them do not work with forsaken monument. imo the upside is not worth it.

Most broken use of Paradox Engine is Time Vault...infinite untaps of that without having to skip turns...infinite turns to kill your opponent, make them draw out their entire deck, or give them poison counters etc. The One Ring PALES in comparison to that IMO
Love how they Nerf that one red 3/3 but leave the one ring untouched.
And really they can't touch it. Otherwise that bundle price plummets
