  • Are Whippet Dogs a Good Choice For Busy People? I hope in this video I can help you guys wondering this question!
    After 4 years of ownership of Freddie The Whippet. I can say that he is the least troublesome puppy I've know.
    He doesn't pester or ask for anything. He is so easily pleased with what he's given.

    I just got my Whippet puppy a week ago. I did a lot of research before choosing a Whippet and honestly he has been the best behaved boy ever. I expected a crazy puppy I have to watch 24/7, but he has been the most chilled out puppy ever.
    So far the only trouble he has caused is that he has perfected the art of stealing my cup of tea when I am not in the room. AND he knows exactly how to pretend he was just resting the whole time.

      🤣 I love this. Thanks for sharing! I don't believe for 1 minute that he would steal your cup of tea. Its must have been someone else 🥹

    Another great video Jed, showing how wonderful a Whippet can be. One thing I would mention, just with EVERY dog and human just give your dog and yourself a quick check for ticks if you have been in the woods, forrest or long grass !!!

    Great video! How are they handling being left alone in a flat after they got all there daily walks? Thinking of how they would handle if I left for 2 hour gym sessions like 2 times per week. Any experience?

    Whippets are the best low maintenance dogs… after about 2yo! Mine are now 8 and 7.5yo and just amazing family member dogs.

    I would say the same about our greyhounds. They are relaxed when I need to work and ready to move when I'm ready to move. The advantage of a whippet over a greyhound is that you can lift a whippet, which must be nice! I see some people able to carry their greyhounds, but I just can't lift our 80-pound dogs.

      Facts right here!
      Greyhounds are so much bigger, longer, heaver and they're damn awkward to pick up aren't they! 🤣 I do love a greyhound though!

    Hey mate, cheere for these videos, Freddie is an amazing boy, kudos for the work you put in with him.
    I have a question - we (wife, myself and 3 year old toddler) got a 9 month old whippet pup. Hes amazingly well mannered, housebroken, crate trained, walks great on leash.
    I work from home, in my home office (a 5x8m room). And am planning to keep him with me there during working hours, with a couple of interactions sessions in the middle, on top of the 3 - 30 min walks he gets in the morning, midday and evening.
    He doesn't know any commands for the moment, but hes smart as hes picked up on not being allowed in certain rooms (but boy does he try).
    Do you have any recommendations/ideas? Got a bit of the puppy blues, due to the hightent alert state we need to keep now, with the toddler around.

    Freddie looks like a wonderful dog! I am a little surprised that you would recommend a whippet for a "busy, chaotic" family because I thought sighthounds are a sensitive breed. Seems like they could get overstimulated. I don't know, I'm just asking.

    • @freddiethewhippett
      @freddiethewhippett  10 місяців тому

      Busy yes, chaotic, probably not. If a family has babies, toddlers who want to tug at the ears of a Whippet, you could be asking for some trouble 🤣 As a busy person myself. I know that I can walk Freddie for 20 minutes and he's a happy boy for the rest of the day while I have to work. He's also happy if I need to bring him to work with me for entire weeks at a time. I think what I mean by all this is that Whippets are happy dogs. Sleeping or on a long walk. They are so, so easy! 🙏

    One thing though about whippets unless yours is good at recall they are not dogs to be trusted off leash lots will run after any animal that moves. My favorite breed though I've had 3 lovely dogs.

    • @freddiethewhippett
      @freddiethewhippett  10 місяців тому +1

      I took recall very seriously when I first got Freddie. I trained him to the point where I can send him to attack. He will not leave my side unless I say... 'Get it then' And he charges off to attack what ever he has eyes for. He's yet to catch a single thing bless him. Not even butterflies are in danger with this boy 🥹🤣

    Lovely video! Would you recommend a whippet for someone who works a 9 to 5 job ? She would be alone at home while I m at work, but I live in the country side and spends a LOT of time out in the wild during my freetime.. I want a whippet for ages, but I wouldn't do it if my schedule would make her feel lonely...

      Thank you! And thanks for reaching out with your question.
      Speaking from previous personal experience, I wouldn’t recommend a dog to someone who works a 9-5.
      Firstly it will apply a lot of stress and pressure to your own life. And secondly the dog will be left alone for too many hours in a day.
      You can make it work by hiring a dog walker to exercise and entertain the dog while you’re out. But this is costly and defeats the purpose of having a dog in the first place.

      @@freddiethewhippett thank you so much for your answer ! I will reconsider it then, till I have the appopriate life style. I dont want to make an unhappy dog :)

    Our boy whippet is a year old now. He’s good for the most part but he will look for trouble when we have evening family dinner at the table. Do you have any advice? I’ve tried feeding him at the same time but he always finished before us. I walk him twice to three times a day with ball fetch on the way.

    • @freddiethewhippett
      @freddiethewhippett  10 місяців тому +1

      There's multiple things you can do. But it will be a daily practice. Feeding at the same time won't work as Whippets finish meals in 0.5 seconds. I'd advise you feed your whippet after you have eaten and only when he has proven himself worthy of dinner.
      Id personally place my whippet in his bed. Every time he moves I'll put him back. And I mean every single time. The best time for training is after exercise. They will be calmer and more willing to do what ever it takes to get a treat (dinner)
      Start small. By rewarding your dog with dinner after staying in his bed while you're all at the table. If he stays for 10 seconds, reward that behaviour. Build up that time over several weeks and months. Before you know it, he will know that if he waits in his bed while you eat, he then gets a delicious dinner.
      Hop this helps. I do have a video on the channel that explains rewarding behaviours you want in a dog. The video is here. ua-cam.com/video/0cu1Jz9mGNA/v-deo.html

    Do you use a correction collar with an audible tone? I ask because I thought I heard a beep when you called him.
    I am very interested in raising a whippet. I had to put my little Italian Greyhound down two years ago and am feeling ready to start again.
    I can only hope whippets have better bladder control than Italian greyhounds. 😩

    • @freddiethewhippett
      @freddiethewhippett  9 місяців тому +1

      I don’t use any correction collar for Freddie. Not anymore! I’ll make a video on this exact topic soon.
      As for bladder issues. Freddie can go an entire day without weeing or pooping 🤣 I know this because when it rains. He WILL refuse!
      Sorry to hear about your Italian :( keep us all posted on your new puppy journeys in finding a new companion 🤷‍♂️

    How do you train him to walk off leash in the woods without chasing squirrels, lizards, deers, rabits, etc?

    • @max-olson
      @max-olson 8 місяців тому +1

      You start training off leash super early! Like day one if get them as a puppy. But you also need to be vigilant: if you see deer in the distance, get them on leash right away.

    • @jimmy66603
      @jimmy66603 5 місяців тому +1

      You can't train any breed of sight hound not to chase. You can gain some control over their urge/desire to chase by building up a trusting relationship, but you'll never fully break their natural born prey driven instinct to chase. The safest way to keep yourself and your dog out of anny bother is stick to the No1 golden rule ? Get your dog on a leash immediately if/when you spot any furry creatures. And there are 100% NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!
      Enjoy 🐶😉👌
