6 Hours to Fix A Few Oil Leaks Nearly Broke Me

  • Thanks to Alex over @legitstreetcars I decided to tackle a rather common job on my 1999 Mercedes E55 AMG. I had taken it to a reputable shop in Plano, TX to address a few issues. One was a leaky rear main seal which considering the age of the car and the fact that it's just shy of 100k miles makes sense. No way I'm dropping the transmission to do that job so I paid up. However, two other small leaks were from the valve cover gaskets (which I'm guessing had never been changed) and a very leaky oil filter housing. So I swapped 6 hours of back breaking labor to save myself $1,300. And I had to finish this in one evening. Was it worth it?

Nice job Mike. $1300 seems high. I live in Southern California and the indie shops don't even charge that much. I'm an 02 E55 owner.

I think it was $450 for valve covers and $800 for oil filter housing and maybe oil pressure switch. I didn’t do the latter. They did the RMS which was right at $1,000 which I thought was about right maybe a tad high. Also independent shop.
