  • In this final episode of Beautiful Zimbabwe, Ryan convinces me, to travel with him to Gonarezhou. We then take the route "less travelled" to get there and obviously arrive late again, but we have the most amazing adventure through the most incredible lands.
    Thank you to Ryan from @4x4ventures for some of the great footage in this episode.

    What an awesome video Bruce! It was both entertaining & informative. There's nothing quite like rural Zimbabwe and the bush was stunning. Made me feel very homesick. I visited Gonarezhou when I was in std 5 (1974) on a school safari of the Lowveld. I remember the Chilojo Cliffs. We walked in the riverbed thru the rounded rocks and those cliffs are really imposing. It always amazes me how clean all Zim cities, towns & villages are, compared to the filth & decay of SA.

      I live in Bulawayo and I keep seeing similar comments on the cleanliness of our cities and towns on other videos. We take this for granted because we see the opposite. Like the story of the snake God's at the dam wall , your old school looks fantastic and how you made an old lady smile at her small road side shop. Loved the history lessons and you are absolutely correct , safety first because safety does not take a holiday. I like the way you captured the trip Bruce, I have a question, and I believe those planning to visit the Gonarezhou game reserve might find this useful. Is there a guide/map to the locations of the campsites and how secure are they say I don't have a roof-top tent and have no camping experience, also what mechanical tools should one carry just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the great content, looking forward to more less travelled route adventures.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  Рік тому

      Thank you Simbaarahe. I carry basic tools but it will depend on your vehicle and how much you know about using those tools.
      Gonarezhou had a great website you can visit. I would stick to the main camps. You don’t need a roof top tent or experience. Just get out there and enjoy. 3 important things to make sure are possible, a comfortable sleep, rehydration, and food. Use dry ice in a cooler box for your food and drink. Don’t worry about all the stuff people say you need.
      Enjoy and let me know how it goes

I will be doing that water crossing in Gonarezhou in about 4 weeks time on the way back from Chewore and Zumba and I will be towing the Conqueror Commander stealth. I will also cover it in an upcoming episode.
      In October I did a trip from the North to the South of the park where I stayed at Mabalauta campsite (spectacular) also which will be in my next episode I am working on now. There is no where that I can think of on the route that I did where I wouldn't tow my Commander.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you Nigel. We probably wouldn't but I never do a crossing without knowing what to expect either by walking it or seeing another vehicle take it. The crocs looked hungry and Ryan wouldn't take his shoes off and get wet for some reason :) :) so we took the safe option.
      I was a bit negative earlier this year and cancelled a family trip there after my booking value basically double two weeks before we were supposed to arrive. (went from around US$600 to over US$1100) Apparently a mistake was made on the original booking and I was charged local rates. Anyway, wrong or right I am very happy Ryan convinced me to go on this trip. I will be going back in May with my family and have already started saving.

    How’s your car been like Bruce ? Doomsayers said this car has lot ECUs and not good.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  Рік тому +5

      It’s been incredible. Those doomsayers are correct there are a lot of ECU’s but they don’t understand the tests and what those ECU’s do. For example you get an ECU to open and close windows, an ECU to control the entertainment system, an ECU for the cruise control etc. the main ECU’s also have redundancy built into them. So if one fails another ecu can back it up. The important ones have up to 5 back ups. They also protect the vehicle from failure so for example they will tell you to start the vehicle when the battery is low or reduce performance when the EGT’s are getting too high. Ive never seen this on any other vehicle.
      All the ECU’s ands connectors are also tested Against dust and water ingress.
      Anyway after 50k Kms I had no issues and still can’t wait to get into it and just drive. Love mine!

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  Рік тому +1

      Hi Simon,
      There is always a lot of negativity about the new defender and Landy’s in general normally by people that heard from someone who was told by their friend that read something somewhere. Most don’t know what they are talking about. My first one did over 40kms and around half of that was overlanding. I have towed and driven on almost every possible surface except snow and ice and done some very deep water crossings.
      Only issues I had was a plastic clip broke on one of the side panels (not even sure when and suspect it was always broken) and a cracked windscreen after a truck in Zim threw up a stone.
      I absolutely love mine and if I could retire I would drive it to Europe and do the americas.
