  • Here's the quick-fire overview of what you need to get into Zwift Run. The hardware, software, configuration, and a few common queries answered. It's still early days for running on Zwift, but I suspect it'll slowly grow in numbers as people dust off their treadmills.

    Good to see Shane. Head over to the Zwift Runners Facebook group if want to know about running on Zwift. We are starting to do more group runs now. facebook.com/gozwift/videos/811267169058760/ is the stream of tonight's (Monday) progressive run. We are doing a marathon pace themed workout on Wednesday www.zwift.com/events/view/40135 with different paces for different pace groups. Please join us if you can.

    I understand Zwift not controlling the speed of the treadmill, however it would be cool if it could control the incline. Would make running up hills more immersive.

    I’ve been on Zwift cycling for a couple of years and have just started running using the milestone foot pod. I’ve never been a runner so it’s a steep development curve but really enjoying it and even during my short runs I’m getting plenty of support and ride ons from fellow Zwifters. Looking forward to more paced group runs, once I can actually keep a pace. Run on!

    The Wahoo Tickr X will work just OK without a foot pod if you want to try it, since it reads velocity & cadence (kinda...) once I bought the polar foot pod the Zwift experience was MUCH better! Calibration is a must, but after doing so the accuracy of the speed (treadmill & Zwift) were real close, not perfect but real good.

      @gplama  6 років тому

      Yep, the trick to put the TickrX/Run into 'run mode' is here: ua-cam.com/video/gTkqWY38idg/v-deo.html

      Will you be doing a video on whether if someone has a TickrX (and set it up for run mode) you would still recommend a footpod? Wondering whether to get a footpod or upgrade to a Tickr X for Zwift running.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому

      It seems the Stryd is the best pod to use at the moment in regard to accuracy and pace changes. I've already done a video on the TickrX hack/tip. Unless Zwift or Wahoo update that process I won't revisit it any time soon.

      @@gplama riding of course. Sorry, I realize I asked on the wrong type of video, but it's been a question of mine. I run a schwinn mountain bike on a smart trainer which means my gearing on the bike is different than that of a road bike. I am probably also one of the weakest riders as well but I was wondering how much the gearing difference may be slowing me down.

    • @anthonyyoungs2216
      @anthonyyoungs2216 6 років тому +2

      Sure, albeit pointless. You may as well just run outside. The reasoning for things like Zwift is to make these activities accessible for people in poor environments or whether climates etc, to assist with training.

    I guess Zwift bases speed on flat terrain ( 0 elevation change, ignoring the virtual world)? I looked at the Stryd with power and I read Zwift does not use power for running. Looks like it just the novelty of watching a character move as your running on a treadmill. Ideally it would use power to generate an accurate speed based on terrain. If it did use the power from a foot pod then you would effectively have gears for your run by varying the incline of the treadmill. For now, I am not seeing a use for it but sure it will get better.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому +1

      Running with power isn’t quite there yet. The numbers reported vary greatly across different ‘power meters’. Pace is the best metric to use at the moment with the technology. I’m sure this will change as the tech matures.

    Shane, thanks for the great content. I see that you now have multiple foot pods for Zwift running. Referring back to your video about using the Tickr X for running on Zwift do you believe that it offers a very decent alternative compared to those foot pods. Since I only run when I'm away from my bike (I.e. Travelling) and that I was considering changing my Mio Fuse, would you recommend the Tickr X as a good choice for Zwift running/biking etc.? Thanks a million.

    • @dday-does-stuff
      @dday-does-stuff 6 років тому +1

      My use case is the same as yours, but after failing (possibly by being stupid) to get the Tickr X to connect- I used my Tickr HR and I just bought the Milestone Pod instead - cheap, accurate and convenient enough for travelling. Hope this helps.

  • @solobuilder7451

    Shane......love the videos......but I would love for you to make a video for me as I’m stuck.......I have a neo, an edge 1030 and a forerunner 735.....could you show how to have multiple devices running (indoor trainer, bike computer, wrist watch) whilst using zwift so that each ride is stored on every device yet they don’t all sync and have conflicting entries on strava......hope that makes sense.......

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому +1

      There's no easy answer for that. If you're creating three independent data sources (1030, FR735, Zwift) then Strava sees them as three different events. The best option is to upload from only one.... likely Zwift for Zwift rides. If you want the data shown during the rides on all the devices then do what you're doing now then discard the activities on the 1030 and FR735 before they sync. Or disable automatic sync to Strava from those devices.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому +3

      Why I can't say the price of Zwift? Because it is different based on where you are (currency, exchange rates). It may change in the future making the information provided wrong. And if people want to sub they best head over to Zwift and go straight to the source rather than regurgitating bold headlines like "87% price rise". % is not representative of value. And value is very very very subjective. That's the long winded reason I keep away from "saying the price of Zwift". Hope this helps. :)

    • @anthonyyoungs2216
      @anthonyyoungs2216 6 років тому

      I normally match mine to the zwift landscape, adds a bit of cross country feel to it. So 0.5% for the flats then climb up to level 2, 3, 4, 5 etc with sharp grades. All just for fun, but you don't need to.

    • @dday-does-stuff
      @dday-does-stuff 6 років тому

      I read somewhere (sorry for vagueness) that it should be set to 1% (generally) for treadmills? I like the idea of adjusting to match Zwift though.

    • @anthonyyoungs2216
      @anthonyyoungs2216 6 років тому +1

      The 1% incline will get you fit really quick as it's essentially cycling at a 1/1.5% incline at all times.
      However not really required, from the km's I'll jog/run a week is usually at 0.5% to be honest, unless I'm simming an outdoor route on the visuals on their monitors.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose 6 років тому +1

      The 1% thing is largely a myth. On your bike would you choose to go uphill slower or faster on the flat throughout? Same applies to running - if you prefer flat do that and if not working hard enough speed up.

    Do the footopods work properly with zero impact?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому

      They may work... but it's more an elliptical than a running machine.... regardless of the marketing spin they put on that. To train for an activity you need to *do* the activity, and running is a lot about the impact. That's the process I'm adapting to at the moment.

    • @mikeshacklock6208
      @mikeshacklock6208 6 років тому

      I realise it's all about impact, but I regularly run 3-4x 10 mile trail runs a week, with Zero runner 10km's the days between & when it's really bad weather as relief. Do the footpods need the impact to record a footstrike or is it the motion

    • @gplama

      That'd be one for the manufacturers. I'd ping Stryd. They seem to have the most advanced motion/pod on the market at the moment.

    Thanks for the video! Do you know / think that this would work on a step machine / climber ? I don't really care about correct metrics as the machine will give you that, just would like to record basic activity time and heart rate into Zwift, and linked apps.... (yes ok call it a "run", and I know it's not accurate). Thanks again !

      I have no idea if this will work sorry. One for Zwift Support.

    I usually calibrate my milestone a few mph faster because it seems to read low.

      What's your calibration process? Are you using the in-game calibration?

      Speaking from memory I believe I set the treadmill at 5.8 and set the calibration on the iphone 6 zwift app for 6.0 and it seems to be right on. I suppose that could vary from treadmill to treadmill as those aren't always calibrated correctly as well. As long as its semi-close I don't seem to mind. There's also a bit of a speed lag on zwift when I go from a light jog to a full gas interval run.

    Can you use a mini trampoline?

      Use a butter knife if you like... it's still not a treadmill.

    Sorry mate, this is pathetic. I understand Zwift for cycling during the off season... but for running!?!. I live in Canada where we have real winters, I still run outside all year round, just dress appropriately (layers).

      No need to apologise to me. If you’re not into people having an option to be more active then that’s all you. If you’re all about the hardcore then again, that’s you.

      I dont think this is pathetic at all. I broke my wrist slipping on ice whilst running 2 weeks ago and had surgery to put a plate in. My only option (due to the stage in the healing and weather (also -5 to -15 deg C)) at the moment for running is on a treadmill which for >15km is boring. For me this depends on what you enjoy about running, like you I also prefer to run outside in all weather types, but safely.

      I would think so too....then I broke my leg and I loved getting back to running on a treadmill instead on trails that I could not do just yet. :)

      Try running all year round in Manila, Philippines where it can hit 110f and the streets are crammed full of smoke billowing Jeepneys.

      If I used this at the gym, there's no option for a larger screen than my cell phone and I'd be looking down most of the time. Can't really afford to buy a treadmill to put in front of the tv.
