      When the treaty was made between Denmark and the US to sell the Virgin Island in 1917, the two sides not only agreed to a sale price but also to a Danish demand for an official declaration stating that the USA would "not object to the Danish Government extending their political and economic interests to the whole of Greenland". So the US so decided that a purchase of the Virgin Island was more important than the future of Greenland, and so agreed to this deal and treaty.

    I'd always wondered how the Vikings reached Greenland, but after visiting Norway one summer, I realised that in the long Northern days it must have been quite possible, if not easy: Norway>Shetland 200 miles: Shetland>Faroes 200 miles; Faroes>Iceland 300 miles; Iceland>Greenland 200 miles (shortest crossing, but Reykjavik>Cape Farewell much longer). Somewhere on the internet it says that an average speed for a Viking boat would be 15mph, so each of these crossings could have been done within 24hrs, daylight all the way (and they could easily spot icebergs). Greenland>Labrador is 500 miles - much more serious, which probably explains the short life of the settlement(s) there. For comparison, Denmark>England and Norway>Scotland are both about 300 miles, and the Vikings did those trips regularly! Presumably the warm climate around CE 1000 helped as well.

    To summarize efficiently : Norwegian vikings colonised iceland. Then, from Iceland, Greenland was discovered. These two territories belonged to Norway. After that, Norway was incorporated into the kingdom of denmark because of succession issues and remained so after the Kalmar union until 1814 (or 1815) when denmark lost the war on the side of Napoleon. Denmark lost Norway but managed to keep norwegian colonies of Iceland ans Greenland as well as the Feroes.

      Look into our history. We're one hell of a war mongering country. I don't think we've gone a century without war for the last 2000 years. Not even the fucking Nazi's got Denmark entirely (we had a resistance movement which blew up factories, railways, bridges and other means of transportation with their own explosives. We also had an assassination department of the resistance movement which used stolen Nazi guns to kill Nazi sympathizers and the like. We were a pain in the ass and pissed them off constantly. Yet not a single Danish Jew was killed by the Nazis. Go figure)

      I think the biggest 'resistance' was only around a couple of hundreds. We weren't a pain in their ass. Skavenius, the minister of foreign affairs at the time, made sure of that. We mostly supplied them with soldiers and food and in return we weren't completely screwed over.

    Would have ben a whole lot easier to simple go through the chronology of the norwegians Erik the Red and Leiv Erikssons discoveries of Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland. How Greenland was actually under Norwegian rule in the norse era. How Norway with Greenland and Iceland ended up under danish rule from 1537 to 1814. Norway was then given to Sweden because Denmark was allied to loosing Napoleon, but denmark got to keep Greenland. Norwegian fishermen then occupied Greenland in 1931 calling it «Eirik the Reds land» and the parliament supported them. Haag then decided against Norway.. This whole video had great potential.

    Hi
    You could have mentioned how the norse settlers of Greenland, the true "Greenlanders", declared loyalty to the king of Norway during the 1000's, thus publicly becoming an official part of the early norwegian kingdom. Which would also later come to rule over Iceland in the Sturlunga-squabbles. The early norvegian kingdom did then later on fall under the crown of Denmark. I think that might have made a clearer connection between the countries, as you make it seem Greenland was abandoned or forgotten until rediscovery by the danes.
    P.s. Just on a personal note. Iceland was never colonized, much like Greenland. It was settled. It became a colony later on.
    Good video, nice narration and overall good vibes.

    Greenland was discovered by the norwegian Viking Eirik Raude (the red). THis by all means is Norwegian land, given to the danes as we had a union With Denmark who got the land under the wrong throne. He made the first settlement on Iceland before that. Iceland is self gowerend, but both Iceland and Greenland should have been Norwegian land to this day: Eirik Raude and his norwegian wife had a som Leif Eirikson (the son of Eirik) who saild to be the first Viking to settle on American soil. The Iceland state now claim him to be an icelander, but that nation did not exist at the time. I think the Norwegians have been too slippery With their Norwegian settlements: Tat could be said by the poles to, Norwegians the first to plant the Norwegian flag. Ha, ha,

    • @TheBarser
      @TheBarser 4 роки тому +1

      But the settlers died out so it pretty much had to be rediscovered. Anyhow if Norway got the colonies they would have fallen into swedish hands instead. Norway was just tossed around like a gift to the swedes by the British.
