I repaired and replaced half of 2001 Nissan Altima thanks to your videos. I must say you are the most detailed person and your videos are the best I have ever watched as far as info and quality. I knew how to do it before I did it. I watched your videos for days until I understood what is what. Got myself all necessary tools and wrenches. All sizes and shapes you recommended. I felt like a Superman after I was done. My kids looked at me like a Superhero. I gave my car to my teenage sons last year and they love it. Now it runs great, they enjoy it, it costs my only to buy parts and weeks of my time in the garage. I put new stereo and speakers, car has 220K and runs as good as new! THANK YOU, THANK YOU , THANK YOU!!!
50's Kid, I don't comment on youtube videos but I had to make an exception with this one. You saved my life. My daughter's 2001 altima had an antifreeze leak and was the pump. Thanks to your video, I saved over $1K. I was not as easy as the video because her car is a little beat down but I did it in 2 days. Thanks Again!!!
Very detailed and the angle is perfectly shows the position of the pump. This give me confident to change my pump. I have a 1999 Nissan Altima and the engine layout is very similar. And yes, my pump is leaking.
thank you. I just did my power steering pump by watching your video many times the whole job took over 4 hours with my basic hand tools. I'm a proud own of my 1999 Nissan Altima that has 220,000 miles and still going strong. The car never had water pump replacement done before. I will be watching this video again and again watch out for tech tips. Thanks
hello, my Nissan never had heating problem with its original water pump OEM thermostat. I'm going to drive this car (230,000 miles on it) to Texas in January. I've watch you video on timing chain replacement. My car doesn't sound like that when started up. I have changed new front bearings, new inner, outer rod and new axles on both side. I changed out the OEM Nissan thermostat to aftermarket thermostat. Should I change out the water pump before embarking on my 1,400 miles trip? I can always change it out on the side of the road if needed but would prefer it though. My temp gauge always stay at the 1/3 when driving never gone to HOT before. I'm changing my 4 motor mounts this time. I only changed out 2 out of the 4 a few years back. I just did my oil change and found no plastic piece in the dirty oil therefore I should not be worried about the cam chain tensioner and the cam chain itself right? Let me know what you think thank in advance 50sKid !!!
I forgot to mention 230000 miles are mostly freeway miles. In addition, I'm changing out the harmonic balancer too to prevent future problem. I'm seeing signs of deteriorating on the harmonic balancer right now.
Don't beat yourself up to badly. Your's is the first video that helps me ouT immensely. Couldn't find a video for the Infiniti g20. So. Thank yo u so very much.
Even if the other 3 motor mounts are in place you still can raise the eng 1to 2 inches giving you a lot of real estate. No harm to the other mounts. They stretch a little. Been doing it for 40 years. Never had a problem.
@50sKid I have a 2001 Nissan Altima with 82K miles, I'm having an issue with no heat, changed thermostat, water pump, bled system and still no heat! Can you offer anything else I can try? I'm not sure where to find the heater core to flush maybe?
I have a 99 and It making noise I've changed both idler pulley and still have the noise took belt aloose and water pump makes same noise as yours like rubber rubbing or something I was going to replace pumb till I saw your video and u still got the noice I was wondering if u ever figured out what was causing the noise
Thanks 50sKid!! With the assistance of this, it was a breeze! I have a 2001 Altima with 260,000 miles. Did you have any issues with your Altima? How many miles did you get out of yours? Thanks again for the video!
I know this is 5 years ago but my fiance currently has a 2001 Nissan Altima with 330,000 MI and it still runs and drives strong and will drive you a few hours back and forth no problem.. But we just recently had a problem with a loud screeching noise like he describes in this video and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong I'm thinking it's either a seized pulley along the serpentine belt system potentially the water pump
+doug drefus There are 3 other motor mounts holding the engine in place. The front (closest to the radiator) and back ones in particular would be holding the engine to the lower frame rail.
How does the car even start without the alternator turning? I took off my 99 Altima serpentine belt to try to diagnose a possible pulley problem, but the car wouldn't start. My battery showed 12.5 volts. Maybe I need to jump my battery from another car?
The car doesn't need the alternator to start or run as long as it has a battery. The alternator charges the battery as it is used. Anyway, sounds like your battery should have enough charge and you should have been able to start it just like I did.
+50sKid I was able to start it while jumping the Altima battery from another car. I guess my battery just didn't have enough juice. That's the good news. The bad news is that the horrible noise I was hearing wasn't any pulley, but probably the timing chain. So, now to watch more of your Altima videos.
+clabcon I've replaced the hoses and thermostat housing, but not the radiator or expansion tank. Those will come soon in a future video. Actually I will do videos on all of it once I can afford to replace parts I've already replaced just for the sake of a video. ;-)
idler or tensioner pulley on the timing belt. Better get that fix ASAP or else you risk breaking the belt when the pulley get frozen and break the belt.
yeah I already replaced the pulley recently. at the end of the video I got the good idea to completely remove both belts, thus eliminating all pulleys and accessories as factors. It's not the idler pulley. Strange, huh?
ah apologies I read that wrong. it's not a timing belt engine, but rather a timing chain, making it all the weirder right? chains have different tensioning mechanisms. anyway, exploratory surgery is definitely called for
How did you put that stupid alternator back on so easily? I cant get damn bolts in. What a piece of $#*t car! I've never come across another car where you have to take off so much including engine mount to get access to the water pump. Great video!!
50sKid I got it finally. I used the trick I saw you did in your video on oil filter housing gasket on e46,I did that this summer on my 323ci (your video helped a lot). Thanks for all your videos keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼
you don't actually need to, it just makes it a little easier to get in there. here's a vid of some guys doing the job w/o removing the alternator: ua-cam.com/video/K6fU4nhpJAo/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video. But honestly you worked too much. I replaced mine a while ago and I only moved the alternator a little. It. Removed those big hoses next to it. Removed the antifreeze container to the side and belt and that's it. A lot easier and faster.
50sKid Thanks for your reply but I definitely need to apologize. I had to replace my water pump again and it was a lot easier the way you did it. Thanks for the video. Thumbs up
So this did not solve the noise problem? I have done all my other pulleys. They were bad too. I now have to do the water pump. I hope this solves my problem. Belts have been changed as well.
I took my water pump out today... this car is a fuckin joke with all the brackets and different size bolts for no reason. Im dreading trying to put the water pump in. The bolt placements are terrible and space for nothing like he said.
+Luis Luna Yeah I'm thinking you're probably on the right track there. Sometimes I noticed the oil pressure light would be on for half a second after start up. I plan to do a complete timing chain replacement on the vehicle. Will solve all issues at that point.

haha my water pump just broke 2 days after i posted the message. Anyway, i changed it out already. Everything are ok now.
Truong Ho hahaha knock on wood next time!
Don't beat yourself up to badly. Your's is the first video that helps me ouT immensely. Couldn't find a video for the Infiniti g20. So. Thank yo u so very much.
Great quality video and lighting! So helpful! I felt hopeless about doing this myself until I watched this.
The alternator comes out alot easier if you take the dipstick out and slide the alternator the other direction. Awesome video
Even if the other 3 motor mounts are in place you still can raise the eng 1to 2 inches giving you a lot of real estate. No harm to the other mounts. They stretch a little. Been doing it for 40 years. Never had a problem.
+doug drefus Oh yeah I usually do that. Maybe I didn't show that in this video.
Thank you for your video it did helped me a lot, I just replaced my water pump in my 2001 altima some kind of work but thank you to your video
Thank you for the video, most of YT videos are not as honest as you are.
BEST VIDEO OF THIS W P REPLACEMENT. THANKS
You helped me a ton! Thanks

Did you ever determine the cause for the noise?
Do you power-wash your engine bays? It seems pretty clean, compared to mine.
Yes I do. :-) Unlike others, I do not like to stay dirty, haha.
Thanks 50sKid!! With the assistance of this, it was a breeze! I have a 2001 Altima with 260,000 miles. Did you have any issues with your Altima? How many miles did you get out of yours? Thanks again for the video!
We're on about 78k miles. No issues other than the oil pump and the common bad intake manifold gasket.
I know this is 5 years ago but my fiance currently has a 2001 Nissan Altima with 330,000 MI and it still runs and drives strong and will drive you a few hours back and forth no problem..

I'm thinking it's either a seized pulley along the serpentine belt system potentially the water pump
I think the noise is your AC compressor! I had the same issue. I removed the AC belt and the noise went away!
Good job man!!!👍👍👏👏
What was the reason for the water pump change?
hey, did you have problem putting the 2 small boltz on because , my would tignting up. 😩
yes, I have problems too. I think my bolts are stript or the holes are striped.
Great vid thankyou!
My 01 Nissan Altima doesn’t wanna start but cranks. I have no idea what it is
I love ur videos
As long as you have the motor mount out why don't you jack the engine up and get a few more inches room to work with
+doug drefus There are 3 other motor mounts holding the engine in place. The front (closest to the radiator) and back ones in particular would be holding the engine to the lower frame rail.
Why don't you use an impact on the water pump pulley that way it won't spin

Good thing I have videos for that, lol.
That like was for being honest 😊😊😊
How old is the cooling system on your E46?
+clabcon I've replaced the hoses and thermostat housing, but not the radiator or expansion tank. Those will come soon in a future video. Actually I will do videos on all of it once I can afford to replace parts I've already replaced just for the sake of a video. ;-)
Don't forget to drain the coolant from the engine block when you get around to doing it. Oh yeah, E46Fanatics: Mango.
You really thought I didn't know that? Come on, dude. ;-)
How is your fan clutch holding up after 180k miles? Much radial play?
+clabcon No play.
Thanks for the great info. I'll be tackling this job in the next few days.
idler or tensioner pulley on the timing belt.
I was doing the job step by step and then I see the end😂
timing belt pulley, not the front serpentine belt.
ah apologies I read that wrong. it's not a timing belt engine, but rather a timing chain, making it all the weirder right? chains have different tensioning mechanisms. anyway, exploratory surgery is definitely called for

I know I hate working on this car. You can get the alternator in by not tightening all the bolts, even the bracket bolts, until every bolt is started.
50sKid I got it finally. I used the trick I saw you did in your video on oil filter housing gasket on e46,I did that this summer on my 323ci (your video helped a lot). Thanks for all your videos keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼
For the life of me I cannot get that power harness off of the back of the alternator.
you don't actually need to, it just makes it a little easier to get in there. here's a vid of some guys doing the job w/o removing the alternator: ua-cam.com/video/K6fU4nhpJAo/v-deo.html

Ah but you don't have to provide good camera angles and I do, so things had to come out. ;-)
Belts have been changed as well.
sounds kinda like a power steering pump
It actually turned out to be the oil pump. I did a timing chain/cover replacement series after this (the oil pump is built into the timing cover).
I found a detailed and accurate project on the Avasva website.
Lolol. I don't know WHAT the hell it is..Good job though. I kmow how to get to the water pump now.
I took my water pump out today... this car is a fuckin joke with all the brackets and different size bolts for no reason. Im dreading trying to put the water pump in. The bolt placements are terrible and space for nothing like he said.
JPS2151988 I hear you man! I just replaced one on my mom's car. It's a piece of crap car!!
I know right? Hate working on this car.
oil pump !!!!!!!! it's losing pressure
+Luis Luna Yeah I'm thinking you're probably on the right track there. Sometimes I noticed the oil pressure light would be on for half a second after start up. I plan to do a complete timing chain replacement on the vehicle. Will solve all issues at that point.
