JJ is awesome we had him as a model in figure drawing at CDA Awesome dude!
Applause for the model. I don't know how you stay still for so long.
kitsune fox they are professionals. Hats off for sure 🎩
Kitsune Fox. He has his photograph taken and goes home.
Philip Keith Wilson actually the model was there for the entire session. Hollis prefers to work from life.
Nooooiceee. Thanks for your time and Spreading your years worth of knowledge of the study of the figure.
He has his photograph taken and goes home.
The model JJ comes to my school CSUF :v Great guy
No one ever mentions their easel in supplies. I love yours!!! Been searching. What is it? Thanks so much for the wonderful video!

Awesome man.

Agreed. Handsome guy, steady as a rock.
Better the model than the painter.

I love his work
Thank you New Master Academy!
Excellent great demo and fun thanks!
Brilliant. Hollis, thanks.
You do a good job, and I'm enjoying seeing your process. One criticism: you make a point of briefly discussing your palette, that you use the same one for all genres (very interesting; I tend to do the same), but you never actually methodically, specifically mention the colors. I discern that you use ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, a red (which one hasn't been mentioned yet - about a third of the way through the video), yellow (a cad? which?), and white (presumably titanium?). I do enjoy your video and your method but wish this hadn't been overlooked.
Tom Hart this is covered in depth in the full course at the NMA.art website

Hello NMA , you ever think of including a digital artist in your arsenal of great instructors?
MIGUEL PINEDA-DRAWS yes, we have plans for this. There is an intro to photoshop course on the site now but we have plans to add more.
Hola Hollis, tienes un parecido con el que actuaba de patán en "Art School Confidential". Parece que no hay un tutorial donde este terminada tu pintura.
take picture of him look picture and paint why he have to sit there and not move for long lol 😂
bedirxx SH some artists work from photos. My understanding is that Hollis prefers to work from life to avoid perspective distortions that lenses introduce and for a more spontaneous feeling in his work.
the colors and values in photos can be flat or distorted
He pointed out that it's much more difficult to paint a person from life instead of a photograph. Therefore the increase in difficulty will over time strengthen the level of skill in the artist who is practicing the more demanding discipline of painting from life. Also, a model who sits for a prolonged amount of time for a painting done from life will be paid and compensated more than one who simply poses for quick photographs. So this practice affects not only the artist but the model as well for the better in the long run.
Also, it's more subjective but many artists claim that painting from life instead of photographs inevitably raises the quality and vitality of the artwork in a number of ways that couldn't be achieved by working from photographs regardless of the artist's level of skill.
You learn so much from painting from life, it's not the same. By the way also painting from photo is a great exercise but really different...
