"outside of valve produced games, valve doesnt force publishers to sell exclusively on their store" - That is exactly my main point and why im totally ok with EA making their games origin excl back when, ubisoft etc. All fine in my books because they publish it, and i have no issue with epic produced games to be excl on the EGS but... their busines practice of taking away choiec that was there... i dont have an egs account and dont plan to, i simply wait and actually profit out of it, because i get games cheaper, bugfixed (Thanks EGS Betatesters) and often with dlc's already released. so a net win for me and a net loss for the egs

I have 30 + free Epic Store games. I only ever purchase ONE Epic Store game and I return refunded that. If they didn't own Fortnite, the Store would already be DOA due to lack of money. Made even worse because in my case PC Gamepass is cannibalizing BOTH Steam and Epic store purchases.

I think the biggest thing that puts Epic in a bad light is none other than Tim Sweeney himself; how his statements are never the ones from a person who works at games but *the kind of things you would hear a politician to say* (always talking about how their opposition are bad and them being the good ones)

Exclusives are an insanely stupid and anti-customer business strategy. They are going to end up spending a billion dollars achieving nothing, think about all the games they could have developed themselves with the money. Valve created the Orange Box on a shoestring compared to Epic's capabilities and its paying dividends to this day, nothing has stopped Epic making their own stable of exclusives.
Reading some of the documents I wonder why no one at Epic has attempted to right the ship. The free games have actually been relatively cheap from a user acquisition point of view. A fraction of the marketing budget compared to exclusives yet puling millions of new users vs tens of thousands.
Sweeny is too arrogant for his position, every single problem they've had, the hundreds of millions burned has been avoidable. Steam already solved piracy with service, even Russians buy their games now. EGS has resurrected cracking groups yet no lessons learned, they do not want to admit Valve got it right.

The biggest reason is the only way epic is competing is because they use timed exclusives deals to force people to buy new games from them. Steam just hosts a market, and if a game is exclusive to it, it’s either valve made or the developer’s choice.
Steam’s platform is far superior and even then they constantly experiment with new features to better serve customers and sellers. Epic doesn’t, and is getting rightfully creamed.

Well said. Honestly, I don't even care so much about those exclusive games, but they could at least put in basic features to keep players using their store front. Things as simple as ability to read and write game reviews, see and join games like with STEAM, cloud saving, high quality screenshots and videos for games they sell...Really basic stuff that STEAM has had for over a decade in some cases. I'm also annoyed over them cancelling Paragon and UT and basically ruining any chance Mech Warrior had of being successful.

honestly the EGS store is a horrendous attempt at being competitive. the people who launch and market the platform delude themselves into believing that exclusives will sell their storefront. but in reality people only use it so they can get access to the free game of the week deals Epic so prominently features. numerous games go free to keep on Epic that people absolutely adore. such as the full Borderlands series, that Batman Arkham trilogy, the BioShock trilogy, and very recently Dying Light was free to keep as well. with the only purpose of EGS being for free games, the platform is hemorrhaging money trying to keep itself alive. most people who tell you they have EGS, will typically say that they use it for the same reason i do; a weekly free game that catches their interest. the only reason as to why Epic themselves don't go under is because Fortnite keeps the company on life support. but the moment that game eventually will die, so will the company behind it. and there are plenty of other storefronts people use, even with the presence of EGS. Such as the Xbox App, Humble Bundle, Steam, GoG, and even through NVidia GeForce Now. the whole entire idea behind EGS is also one massive lie told by a greedy asshole who is simply jealous of other companies having a monopoly over digitally sold games. he isn't against them because he believes the industry requires more competition. he does it because he wants to be the only competitive store front people would buy from. and that delusion leads to his hypocrisy being shown off with all the glamor of a potato with lipstick.
slight correction about the Hitman trilogy. you can transfer your save data from Steam to the Epic version of Hitman 3, however you have to make an IOI account, linked with your Steam email, and go through the laborious and often times inconsistent step by step guide they have on their website. at this point in time, this process is irrelevant since Hitman 3 is now on PC Gamepass and Steam as of the Freelancer update.

Thing is, Epic is not competing trying to fix Valve's mistakes with Steam. They just made a worse store for everyone were the only incentive are the exclusives and the free games.
Compare this to GOG which for example has a DRM-Free version of Batman Arkham Knight (which on Steam it has Denuvo). The whole store is DRM-Free and I love it. Doesn't try to censor adult games as much as Steam (they release a uncensored patch with the game probably for legal reasons). It has some exclusives just they're old games that the team rebuilt for modern versions of Windows like Diablo or Metal Gear Solid. A large database play other games outside GOG within it's own launcher, very comfy.
What does the EGS? Compared to Steam they don't have much remarkable features for the user. They aren't competing at all.

What's amazing is that Epic Games thinks that their store was going to offer something that Steam didn't, but Steam already offered literally EVERYTHING a games launcher could give someone. It has:
    -A friends list
    -An invite system
    -Modding capabilities
-Constant sales so you can get great games for cheap prices
    -A messaging system
    -Player review sections for games
-Refunding abilities if you meet the criteria
-An organized store that you can manually customize to only show games from genres you play
What does Epic Games Store have?
    -A friends list
-They give out free games often, but most of them are forgettable Shovelware
That's it, that's all EGS offers. What a joke. Looks like Epic really let Fortnite get to their heads.

afaik 30% is still the standard for consoles, and nintendo might have/had a slightly higher/lower percentage (the nintendo one i'm not too confident about tho, and it's very likely outdated if true)
when fortnite was very popular, egs stood a chance solely because egs pulls devs into their platform and steam had to improve their service to better appeal the consumers
valve knew steam's strengths and made it better in response to egs quick rise to a reasonably threatening competition
valve just understands that a store dies with the customer count thus customer has to be happy with the service, egs feels more like a mafia gang than a store
if egs were a fictional character, i can imagine it saying "if you want to start a business, we got cheap rents and we'll also protect your store", "i got a business proposition for you, i'll give you extra cash but i'll need to use the basement and you don't have to know what we're doing down there as long as you play nice we won't have a problem"

Then again, I have never spent a cent in it, so who knows

To put that into perspective, Nintendo Online has profile pictures.

I'll never forget metro exodus being pulled off of steam 2 weeks prior to its release (while they kept publishing promotional material through the steam community feature) and all the chaos that resulted. Not to mention one of the execs saying that if pc gamers didn't buy it from epic, they would stop making games for pc altogether. Very smart to attack the people who want to give you money. This is why I just straight up am not buying their games anymore, including exodus. If I want it that badly, I will just use alternative methods.

They don't even have to stop buying exclusivity entirely, if they bought 2-6 weeks instead of a year they would get a large portion of the initial sales with much less backlash.

Another thing about egs, they can lock you out of your account for no reason. They locked me out claiming that they could not confirm that I was the original creator and boom my account locked. Exactly why this happened, probably because I left their support team as bad with an issue I was having since they literally offered nothing. What I learned, when and if I do get my account back, I don't contact support over issues since they might just ban my account and never spend a dime there and try to switch to steam ASAP. Right now playing online games is a bit of an issue for me since my internet is awful but hopefully that changed when I switch countries. I actually planned to once buy from egs due to the giant library of free games I've built but after getting a few games on steam I'm thinking to sell it cheap to someone who wants to buy it, a friend or so and warn them to not contact support since instead of helping they'll try to take away your account.

It's funny how Epic treats games as if it was a console, game consoles have differences beyond exclusive games where you buy the sum of everything rather than only the exclusives, if your only difference is being worse than the competition then don't expect the temporal exclusives to carry.

I've been saying it since the very beginning - EGS does not even have HALF the features that Steam offers, and the only thing EGS provided was a lower income tax for greedy publishers.
When it launched, it had none of the features that Steam established as a standard.
No reviews, no achievements, no marketplace, no dedicated discussion board for each game, no screenshot hosting, and no shopping cart, just to name a few.

    • @sallomon2357

Let's ignore the rest of these features, like the "social" ones, and think about this for a moment: EGS, a digital store that wants to compete with Steam, doesn't even have a shopping cart, a BASIC FEATURE of EVERY online shopping website, or at least a vast majority of them. Wtf.

But many people wanted to escape away exclusivity by buying games on steam but yet epic games just have to piss off many people by turning pc gaming
Into console gaming by forcing people to use their shit launcher which sure will be remember as one of the worst moments ever to happen for 2019 gaming.

One positive side about valve is how open they are to testing out literally anything, even if it’s harmful. Sure this has resulted in some terrible practices like paid mods but it has also given us less terrible features like the steam marketplace and steam early access program. Regardless of the controversies both of these systems have been in, they have contributed massively to steam’s growth as a platform. Epic isn’t so open to trying out any new idea and so their store has stayed relatively the same since launch (which means no incentive to use it over their much more extensive competitor outside of pricing)

Turns out making your platform a burden to consumers (you have to use EGS or wait a year to buy an exclusive) is a very bad way of getting people to use your platform. Why would I want to buy anything on EGS when I already have a bad association with it as the app I was forced to download to buy a game I wanted to play on release.
