    Thanks for posting this video. One of my first overnighters was at Cabin Flats and I had the same impression....a great place to spend the night. The sound of a mountain stream put us to sleep. God bless my friends! And keep those videos coming....

    I actually went on this trail, it's a great challenge to get through but if you push yourself far enough, you can't really turn back, so I guess thats what really motivates people to do what they do. But I hope you really enjoyed it, I know it's pretty fun.

    Never trust the weather forecast in the Smokies! Great trip. I love that loop you planned out. I've wanted to head that direction from Newfound Gap but never have. Most of the rest of the trails I've done. I'm glad you said you liked Campsite 49. It's one of my favorite campsites in the Smokies. Your video quality looks fantastic btw. Good luck with the marathon . . .

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  6 років тому

      Haha! Yes we learned not to trust the forecast. I think the rain we had was the only all week though so i'll take it! I was thinking about your thru hike when we were on the Benton Macaye. Thanks so much! Finished the marathon in 4 hours and 25 minutes. Cramped pretty bad at mile 22 but got through it!

    • @EvansBackpackingVideos
      @EvansBackpackingVideos 6 років тому

      Congrats re the marathon! I'm thinking about a return to marathoning after I attempt the AT. It's a comparable sort of challenge but doesn't take nearly as long to get through, lol. I watched your video twice by the way, looking at the way you set up your shots. If you ever see a shot in one of my videos in which the foreground is in focus, then I walk by on the trail out of focus--I stole that one from you!

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  6 років тому

    Great video! Charlies Bunion looks so beautiful. Do you know of any other routes in the mountains that are more of that style scenery? It seems most of the smokies are pretty closed off as far as views go

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  5 років тому

      Thank you! I really dont know too many great views like that. Mt. Leconte has great views but no primitive camping. It would be a long day to loop this view into a backpacking trip. Andrews Bald is near Clingmans Dome and has some good views from what i've seen. Charlies Bunion is one of the best views for sure.

    Hey Bryce. Looked like a great trip! I really need to get down to North Carolina looks as beautiful as I remember it as a kid. I was able to get in several trips this year to Virginia and the AT but I only filmed a little so I know what you mean about just enjoying the moment. FWIW, I backpacked roughly 130 miles of the AT this year. All of it in my Hoka's (atr2) and they worked great...zero complaints. Take it easy bro and good luck with the marathon!

      I really respect the things you two have done with the running side of things. Awesome. I used to love running but my knees can't take it anymore. This past year I've refined my gear and started to focus on hiking much longer distances. Sometimes I get into short jogging bursts but nothing prolonged. I've self committed to AT section hiking. Next summer I'd like to physically be able to do consecutive 20 mile days. I guess it's a journey to get there. If you get down toward Archers Fork let me know and maybe I can get out too. Take it easy.

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  6 років тому +1

      Thanks a ton! its been a crazy year for us. We both are talking about taking it easy for awhile. I too have started to have knee issues. Some days more than others. Tackling the AT is a dream of mine. 20 mile in a day is a feat even for me. I could run it easier than hike it. I've thought of section hiking it. But i've actually been planning a full on thru hike. Mayb 2019? Been saving for year now and im halfway there. Only thing is i havnt told my employer yet. lol. Not sure how that will go over.

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  6 років тому

      Thanks Jason. Not sure what salomons they are. They actually dont even say on them and i threw the box away. They aren't even on the website, so i think they are a "Dicks Sporting Goods exclusive" or something. Probably why they were only 80 bucks. haha. The marathon went well. Was on pace for a 4 Hour finish but when the cramps hit at mile 22 it dropped me down to a 4:26. It was an experience. haha

    • @jasonwish-
      @jasonwish- 6 років тому

      Pretty good pace for that distance...sounds like you were shooting to stay under a 9 min mile ave? I sure couldn't run that kind of distance. After 5 miles i feel like i have to walk some, but i can hike all day long at 3.3 mph ha ha. When I was at Red River Gorge two weeks ago the Rough Trail 50k was in progress....now that is some serious distance on some rugged terrain!!! but sounds fun!

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  6 років тому

      Yea i was holding a good 9 min mile pace but 26 was too much for me that day. haha. I actually just did a half marathon last weekend and held a 7:30. Happy about that. There is a 50k at salt fork state park in december that ive been thinking about doing. still not sure though. You should give one a try! Everyone takes walk breaks on those ones.

      It is common backpacking etiquette to dig a 6" hole to bury human waste. Also is a rule among most backpacking trails

    Nice work. Great video. Do you think you should treat your your tooth brushing spit like pee or poo and not spit in the stream? (That's what it looks like on the video, but maybe that wasn't what happened.)

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  5 років тому +1

      Thanks John! Yea i think we spit in the creek. Probably not the best thing to do but the difference is that spit wont give someone giardia like pee or poo. I think we spit it out in the creek so that the spearmint toothpaste would wash far down stream to not attract any bears near our camp.

      I bought the smoky mountain maps that fold out (huge!) And just color copied the section I wanted. It just happened to fit on an 8x11 or whatever paper is

      Cool video! I am looking for a hike like this in the great Smoky mountains. Keep filming. Careful with the focus when you do the stationary takes you walking in or out. Set it manual with the focus in the middle of the frame.

    I have noticed in a few of your videos that you carry your poles with the point up at your head. Are you concerned about taking a tumble and jamming them into your skull? Maybe it’s just the angle of the camera that really makes them look like they are pointed at your head.

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  5 років тому

      most of the time they are pointed straight up. i have actually considered that though. although i dont fall often (only once so far) and it i dont think the poles would be an issue. good lookin out though. i appreciate it

      Love the videos. I’m not too far from the west rim trail. I hunt that area every year. The hunting cabin is right at rattlesnake rock. That’s a cool swimming hole in the summer time too. If you like to fish take a rod with you next time. There are plenty of trout to catch up there.
