Hi Bas, another awesome video presentation... When I'm describing airflow to low airtime pilots, I always tell them to think of water flowing over rocks... Shallow water equals strong winds, deep water equals light winds. The same analogy can be used to ascertain the winds in an LZ or even around take off...

Agree, this comparison with water works good I think. Remember a video from Chrigel Maurer explaining this way also thermal behaviour: "Imagine the mountain landscape as an upside down model and then spray it with water, the places where the water droplets come off, are the places where thermals will come loose". I think in many theories you can consider air as very thin water😊

@@dutchcondor Hi Bas, the old upside down dripping water scenario works well. Another analogy I use is to think of Space/Time. The more altitude you have, be it setting up a landing or heading out on an XC or crossing a gap, gives you time to have a plan B or even a plan C... Also the step ladder approach when going somewhere. If you get to that point you might make it further or you can get back to a safe place... It's frustrating seeing lots of newbies getting hurt because they just follow more experienced pilots and get themselves in trouble. We've recently had a spate of accidents with a few new pilots here on the coast and once they go inland the dynamics change again... You can't put the cart before the horse...

Hey guys! Thanks for the compliment and likes, appreciate your support. Great point, I use the water analogy all the time, it works great. Perfect way to visualize and model. In professional aerodynamics design they use computational fluid dynamics (cfd) to model all kinds of stuff, I'm looking into using that on the channel too :)

NB specific to the end segment of the video ref soaring a typical sized dune (i.e. not hill) .... when a pilot places wind indicators (streamers/wind socks) on the ground at the dune (gap) edges THEY (streamers AND the pilot) will 'feel/see' this mentioned local direction deflection/shift.... BUT the Aircraft (PG wing) 7m higher will experience a far smaller (or no) shift in the wind! PS one way I've demonstrated to my RE-training students over the decades why it's vital to always base your pilot decisions on what the Aircraft (wing) is moving in... NOT what ground based indicators on their own perhaps suggest.. is by my flying (my body BELOW the crest of the dune 'so sheltered from the wind', often, when I had long hair!, to such an extent my hair was blowing towards the back of the dune) despite 'flying (just) downwind of the dune the wing which is still ~5m higher than the crest remains in lift.. The last flying location of today saw me launching (next the carpark) directly into a 70* (downwind) crosswind dune+gaps flight (it took two flights +short hike to cover 1km) to quickly get to the sea cliffs at the north end of a East Scotland site (cliff takes a southerly)

Did some dune soaring myself today😊 It's quite technical flying compared to whinch flying. But i managed it well, Maybe it has something to do with all those informative youtube video's?😉😊 Cool episodes Bas, Thanx👍

Nice 👍it is indeed, the most technical form of flying the pg in my opinion, next to acro that is ;) So did you have a good time??

      @@Flightcoach, Freakin' loved it❤
Almost 1.5 Hour flight time extra and i called it because it got too crowded for my liking and because of the wind window. I flew longer than i predicted in advance. No need for speedbar and other tactics, Just relaxed flying and having fun. Skillset comes in stages, this was only the second soaring session for me and i nailed it😊🤘

Thanks a lot! I did some extra post processing on the clips I shot with my desktop overlay.
