Great Video Marty! Like you, I visited Cincyslots 2 weeks ago. This was my first visit to a commercial track or any track for that matter. Met Bruce, his crew and his regular Thursday race group. Everyone was super nice and helpful. I agree with asking a lot of questions. I did. Its a great way to "break-the-ice" with folks you don't know and you learn tons. Although I didn't race, I did leave with a new SIdeways Porsche 935!

There's a commercial track in Vegas that has been there for 30 years... I remember when it first opened, across town. From what I understand it's still going strong.

Re-commentling, I think my first comment got deleted because it had a link in it. Anyway, great video Marty, thanks for continuing to put up content for us just starting out in the hobby. Like you, I recently had my first club racing experience with the Wednesday Night Racers in the Philadelphia area. Check them out on FB or their new website.
My experience was very similar to yours. I arrived at Great Traditions slot car shop completely empty-handed, but after some introductions and orientation a guy lent me a controller and 2 other club members lent me cars for each of the 2 class races that night. Of course I finished last but my goal was to stay in the slot and learn the ropes. Everyone was very friendly and was happy to share their knowledge and experience. I did contribute to the event by marshalling when I was not racing. Like you, I learned more in those 4 hours about racing procedures, cars, tracks, tuning, rules etc than I could ever learn on my own.
I 100% encourage folks to find a club or commercial track and get out there and enjoy the hobby with other slot car enthusiasts.

Very helpful Marty!!! I’ve been thinking about a trip to Cincy sometime this year. It’s a haul but I think it’d be worth the trip. I used to race on large commercial tracks with my dad from when I was 10 up to 16 years old. My best memories competing with dad. I remember it taking me forever to get comfortable racing I was so intimidated. Dad kept encouraging me and taking me and that experience has served me well. Well done mate!

Cad1900.. thanks so much. Yes, I know that it can be very intimidating. I think if you go in with the correct mindset, you can have a wonderful time at any track. The thing for me is.. everyone has to start somewhere. If you ask good questions and are not offended by people trying to help, you can fit in anywhere. Make sure you check the race schedule at Cincy Slots..they only race from October to March.. but it is a great shop to just browse.. they have a ton of slot cars.

Marty, the problem with home tracks is the startup cost and space available. Those two things limit participation to single and "empty nesters". The commercial tracks could bring in younger guys if they had some smaller, introductive tracks and cultivated younger folks. Maybe the business model just doesn't work. Home, club tracks with friends and family works.

@@twolinesslotcars The attitudes and bullshit from the commercial tracks back in the 60's ruined the hobby. Became too competitive. The availability of home track equipment is terrific. I restarted the hobby at home in June of 2021; about the same time you got going. Home and scratch building is a HOBBY, not a hard core racing competition. Just my opinion.
