    Good review and advice on getting prepared.
    Things to bear in mind for the pro's and con's: You can carry 500ml of water in the kettle. You can carry other items in the chimney. You will boil 2 litres with a Kelly kettle faster than gas or spirit systems will boil 500ml. You will never run out of fuel or have to carry multiple cans of gas or bottles of spirit for an extended trip.

    Hi there, I use the base camp, as it will boil 1.5 litres in around 5 mins, the size of it is of no issue to Me as I use it with the van. The benefits for me is I can boil a lot of water and once it's fired up I can fill 2 large 1.8 litre thermos flasks just before bed, and use them for a brew in the morning and a good wash! I also fill a hot water bottle in cold weather, because no issue for me with size, it's a 10 / 10 from Me 👍 . Good explanation for the trekker, I use a trangia 27 kit for backpacking but would get the trekker if starting out again.

    Well done! I have watched several reviews and you are the only one that has mentioned KEEPING water in the chamber while cooking. TY

    Your instructions are very well done. I use the Scout model, one size up, and it still goes into the backpack. The size issue is a relative one, considering that if you close the stopper correctly, you can transport an initial load of water in it, while other stoves cannot contain any water. The amount of water you could store in the Kelly-kettle would take up space in another container and needs to be taken into account in the equation. A recommendation is to go for the stainless steel versions, as aluminum is not good for your health.

      Hi Rob, thanks for the feedback - you are right you can transport water in the kettle so this will save some space. The size issue I think is more of a personal preference, it purely depends on if you want to go light or don't mind carrying something a bit bulkier. As I say in the video, it is a trade-off between size and efficiency. Thanks for sharing!

    I've got a Trekker coming in a week or two. They're making them all out of stainless steel now, even the base. I got a kit with the kettle and base, a pot stand, I think a little grill, and they're equipping them with whistle plugs now, all in a green bag. I'd been fascinated with these kettles for a long time, and decided to get one because I've always wanted one, and in case things go from bad to worse where I am.
    Hot water is a huge thing. Hot tea, hot coffee, hot water for washing oneself, etc. I have canned meat and fish and things, and the best way to cook survival food is in the form of soups. For a more smokeless fire, using charcoal you either buy or make, would be the ticket.
    I've built many a little alcohol stove, various hobo wood stoves, experiments with chimneys and even forced-air, and this Kelly is one of the neatest things I've seen. (Except their hobo stove looks really lame; you can make a better one out of a soup can lol)

    I gather a different stopper/bung is available which also acts as a whistle for when the water boils. Clearly that will act as a release valve and be safer than the stopper you use in the video.

    G'day mate , I don't know where the design / idea came from , but years ago working on the a railway gang here in Australia we had those kettles . The rouseabout would boil up 2 or 3 kettles for the smokos. Glad you showed a vid of the new kettle.

    Great review, thank you. We have the Scout model and love it. You hit all the key points and provided a good instruction on how to use the product. The wonderful thing about the KK is that the crappier the weather, the better it performs. Point the intake of the burn pot into the wind and the chimney effect of the stove acts as a supercharger for the fire. Cheers!

    As far as the volume of water is concerned, the limited amount of time it takes to boil a kettle full of water,You could boil several kettles during dinner and supply an entire group with boiled sanitized water.

    This was really useful, I just ordered one for in case we have power cuts this winter. The aim is to fill a flask from it to make tea throughout the day and maybe heat some beans like you show. I'm getting the grill bit, hoping you can do toast on it. Cheers for the safety info.

    I have the base camp kettle, I'm going to get the Hobo Stove next week. I was amazed at how fast it can boil water. And I've cooked using the top attachment. But I want that Hobo Stove. Thanks for the review.

    In every video i see people piling too much fuel into the kettle too fast ... If you're getting a lot of smoke quit adding fuel until whats already in the kettle is burning hotly and with a minimum of smoke ... Then add more a little at a time ... A little dab will do ya

    Kelly Kettle is a useful piece of kit, but they need to be diligent on their QC. I found a flaw on both (large and medium sizes). I had to return the medium one, for its flaw was so serious I could not live with it-- a large, 2 inch gash inside the fire chamber. The large one has a 5mm cut above the waterline.

    The origin comes from a arterial shell , soldiers would shape into similar to the kelly kettle now but brass shell field kraft worth looking into for the history enjoy 😉

    I have never understood the need for a large fire for an overnight stay! I like the small fire afforded by the fire base. in a emergency, it will be important to be small and unnoticeable and very quiet.

    The Kelly kettles are awesome, please look at Kelly Kettle Australia if you wish to purchase www.kellykettle.com.au and we will be happy to help. Tony Burke from Gone Bush Product Reviews has done a great independent review on the kettle and showing lots of safety aspects of the kettle along with the speed if boils water....and best of all you do not need to carry any gas/fuels etc around with you, just any dry natural fuel barks, leaves, twigs etc will work

    Nice! I've been intrigued by the Kelly Kettle, looks like a great bit of kit for camp cooking! How much water does it hold?

    • @GoneBush
      @GoneBush  6 років тому

      Hi Rob,
      the one I used in the video holds just over 0.5l of water, but you can get bigger ones that hold more water. For overnight / solo trips it is a good size to use.
      Thanks,
      Tony

    What is your pot and cup combo? Does it back nicely with the KK?

    • @GoneBush
      @GoneBush  6 років тому

      Hi there, apologies for the delay - I didn't see this comment come through.
      The pot and cup combo is a set I bought from Kathmandu a while back, they don't come with the KK and you can't fit them in the pack together, but KK does have a pot and cup set that does integrate into the kit as far as I'm aware. The link to the pot is in the description of the video.
      Thanks for commenting!

    Good review Gone Bush. I can confirm Barra650's statement of them being used in Oz for quite a while, 150 years or more. victoriancollections.net.au/items & www.ghillie-kettle.co.uk/history/5a5bf16f21ea6719c8d5a178. There is also a story of it being invented by an Irish fisherman in the mid 1800's. I have owned one for over 50 years. Of course you now have The Ghillie Kettle, The Aussie Bush Kettle, The Rimco Rapidfire Kettle etc. Cheers
