Nancy, you are spot on. I've been knitting for well over 45 years. As a young adult career took precidence but... I'm so happy I went back to it when things eased off and then moreso when I retired. Now I knit every day and every day I learn something new - a new stitch, new Cast on or bind off, a new technique. It is so exciting and what keeps me going. I set one project (a cardigan) aside numerous times trying to learn something I couldn't grasp and talking to people 'in the know'. Finally after 10 years or more I finished it. Obviously, it was something beyond my skill level but, it was so worth it to persist. And my friend finally got her birthday gift albeit 10 years later.

I’m a left-handed 59 year old glad I found your channel and tutorials for left-handed knitters. When I was a young 16 year old I worked during the holidays in a large department store and they put me in the wool department during the summer and it was very quiet as you can imagine! I was fascinated with wool, soft textures etc in the department and wished I could knit something. Frustrated that I couldn’t knit the department supervisor right-handed tried to teach me a short tutorial to knit left-handed nothing clicked and I put it in the too hard basket. So thanks to you and watching a left-handed tutorial my brain gets it!!! I’m going to buy some wool and needles this week and teach myself from scratch watching your tutorials. ❤

Thank you for this all too needed message. As a new knitter, I have quit many times for these reasons! So I went back to the simple scarf and just finished my 2nd hat after starting over, and over, and over. Successes, with mistakes too but some I actually figured out how to fix. So true that knitting is an adventure. I love it more each time I pick up my current project and get lost in a sort of meditation of sorts. I just finished your Woven Stitch on a little piece and think I will use to knit a washcloth as some other viewers suggested. You are also pleasant to listen to, by the way.

I am slowly learning to knit. I admit, i like instant gratification. I crochet, so I am used to making things in a short span of time. I tried a 'Ross hat' as they all say it is a good starter project. Teo weeks later, it was a really bad cowl. All the things i do not know about knitting in one project. I have several crochet projects to finish, but my goal for next year is to stsrt and complete one to two small knitting items. Hopefully hats, and two or three tunisian items. It gives me hope.

I need to remember the "it gets hard before it gets easy" part, since I'm always starting projects with the pressure for them to be perfect and proceeding to disappoint myself when it doesn't go as well as I hoped. I was taught how to knit when I was young and only a basic knit stitch, so I don't know why I'm surprised when trying to do something I was clearly never prepared for!
Anyway, I thought I would update you on my knitting technique after the left-handed video you did. Turns out I wasn't alternating my stitches and doing garter stitch instead, so thanks for helping me discover that as well. I'm still not used to this knitting thing, but I'm making socks now haha

I enjoyed watching this video and knowing I'm not alone in some of those feelings of wanting to quit. I recently got into knitting small doll sweaters by downscaling humansized patterns. Before that I only made simple mufflers and pillow cases.
Most of my feelings to give up have come from having projects not come out the way I intended due to inaccurate gauge measurement or accidently choosing unflattering garment dimensions when modifying patterns. As a slow knitter too, it's disheartening to spend all that time with an end result you don't like.
I think reminding ourselves why we choose to knit is important when we undergo those challenges. Otherwise it's true we can just buy an already made item or commission the knitted project we want.
I knit because I enjoy the creative process and how therapeutic each stitch is when I find my rhythm. What about you?

    • @vivienneclarke2421
      @vivienneclarke2421 2 роки тому +1

I totally get what you just said. Whenever I start a knitting project,I always go at it with the idea that if it turns out,I got lucky. And if I hate how it turns out, then it was never about the end result,it was about the PROCESS. The journey, not the destination. For me,the process is almost meditative,it's my quiet, happy space.
I've spent so many hours knitting SO many things that looked awful when I finished. I simply pull it all apart and reuse the yarn for my next attempt. One day I realized that I now had WAY more finished projects that I not only loved, but so did friends and family. Once you reach that point there's no going back~!!
I'm wishing you all the best~stick with it and just enjoy the process~!!

Your videos are always very thoughtful. Great information. I learned crochet at about age 7 and taught myself to knit while in hight school. (I am over 60.) I had a love/hate relationship with knitting because it is SO different from crochet., but I liked the way knitted garments looked. Crochet was fine for afghans and doilies, but I wanted my sweaters and such to be knitted.
I most relate to #6 because I have been trying to master socks-2 at a time on 2 circulars - for about 5 years and I am almost there. The problem was that I had too many other project in the pipeline and didn't devote enough time and energy to learning what I really wanted to do. I am almost there. I want to be able to knit these socks 2aat without looking at the method to make that happen. I just go from one pair the next to keep my mojo. Maybe this will help some of you others viewers. Thanks again!

    Some great advice!
I have always wanted to learn to knit. I tried when I was younger but I gave up. Last year a good friend of mine (who knits & crochets) taught me to knit. She showed me the basics, and helped me understand why I often ended up with holes or gained stitches. I'm still learning, but i have learnt several tips along the way. Stitch markers and my knitting notebook are now my best friends. Instead of trying to remember where I was up to, I use stitch markers and my faithful knitting notebook. I'm currently knitting about 6/7 projects, my favourite of which is a shawl for my nieces 16th birthday after Xmas. It is a 38 row pepeat pattern, but contains simple stitches which I can do, and my trusty notebook keeps me on track.

I wish I was more organized! I write things down too,but they never make it into an actual notebook. Instead, there's scraps of paper all over my house, next to my bed,in my knitting basket,on the kitchen counter,in my purse, just EVERYWHERE,lol, with partial notes,in my made up shorthand, that even I can't understand half the time😂 You've inspired me to try to be more organized~!! Thank you !!

      @nobleknits  2 роки тому +1

@@vivienneclarke2421 I still struggle with the problem of being organized! When sticky notes are all over the place, I take a plain notebook and stick them in there. At the top of the page, I write the date and what the sticky note is for and then all of my sticky notes are in one place!

These are such helpful tips. There are 2 or 3 that I really needed to hear. I have an afghan project that I started a year ago and hated having so many stitches. I had two or three inches done and then avoided it like the plague. Listening to you talk about starting projects and setting them aside, I realized that I was never going to pick up the afghan project again. I've bagged it up and am going to take it to goodwill. Someone will enjoy making a beautiful cream colored afghan. I'm going to pick up a project for a scarf that I know I will finish.

As a child, I did some throw style knitting - too tight. Decades later, a friend showed me how to knit a lopi sweater. Yellow and black. Big project - so bright. It turned out like a bumbblebee
    Costume. All good.
Moved back to my home town and knit with famiy friends. Had to (forcefully) take back my project from too-critical experts. There was always something - too loose - your toes will get caught. On a feather fan scarf?? Augh.

Hi Roxanne, When you are just starting out, I always recommend choosing smaller projects so that you can see them through to completion and have a feeling of success. However, once you get a few projects under your belt and you want to knit something larger, go for it. When I started knitting, I chose a baby blanket before I was ready. I was so slow that it took me sooooo long just to knit one row, I felt like I wasn't making any progress. If you start a larger project and feel that way, you'll know that project may just be a little too much. Set it aside and go for smaller projects until you become faster and the larger project doesn't seem overwhelming. Hope that helps!

    Hi Nancy,
Are you still in the yarn/advice mode?
    Have you stopped doing videos?
I'm a lefty and "oldtime" knitter who got away from it for years ((work & beading & quilting & miniatures got in the way)
Since coming back I've noticed that the yarn companies no longer give us a starting tail on a skein (in the middle) like they used to. And you can't get the middle/center out of the skein without tangling the whole thing up! I like to rewind/"cake" my yarn and it's next to impossible to do with the outside tail. Do you have any idea why the yarn companies stopped doing this?
Please let me know, Patty 🧓

I have a tendency,WHENEVER I learn something new,to always choose things way more complicated than my skill level. Then I get frustrated, make a mess of it,and give up!
Idk what happened with me and knitting, tho,but I took to it like I'd been knitting my whole life. I was 53 the first time I picked up needles😄
True to my character,,my first project was a queen size, striped,Celtic cable blanket. I made up the pattern myself spending hours writing it all out and inserting the cable panels. I knew NOTHING,and basically just used 50 gram balls of yarn, some were wool, some acrylic, some blends. I used DK weight, aran weight,I even took bulky yarn and separated it out to have thinner strands🤦‍♀️
An experienced knitter would have CRINGED at what I did🤣
Miraculously tho, it turned out beautiful, and to this day I consider it the nicest thing I've ever made.....my sister even makes a point of showing it to everyone that comes in my house~I keep it draped over the back of my sofa.
Of course now I'd never DREAM of doing that, but I still marvel at how my ignorance and tenacity turned into the most Gorgeous blanket ever~!!
My very next project? Was a feathers and fan lace afghan, and again, knowing nothing other than what I learned from that first blanket,I jumped right in~and it also turned out Beautiful~! I think, after 57 years of looking for something I love to do,and not get bored after 3 months and moving on,,I've finally found "my thing"😂 I knit for at least 3 hours, usually more,EVERY single day~! And never once lost interest or gotten bored.
Sorry for such a long comment, but no one I know has enough knitting enthusiasm for me to share stories with~!!

Hi Vivienne, OMG I am SO GLAD you shared your knitting journey. I have to admit, when I was reading about how you created the Celtic cable blanket, I found myself rubbing my forehead picturing that scenario 😂...however, I'm glad you persevered and had success! What knitting challenge are you going to take on for 2022? Do you share your knitting journey here on youtube?

Glad I gave you a laugh, and no idea what I'll be making in 2022,right now I'm doing baby stuff dor my new grandson due next year.
I'll come back with an update if I do anything crazy and wonderful tho~!!😄

If you are like me, you do not get a gradually catching on type of feeling when learning something new. For me, it is impossible, it is inconceivable that this is even possible that a human did this once, it is horribly frustrating and stupifying, but then like a light switch was flipped, it is now simple if not easy and you might even stare at it and ask yourself 'why did this ever seem hard?' Because it is so obvious now. So I encourage you to stick with it and gently persist in trying to learn whatever you really want to learn, because if you are like me, you are in deed learning but you will not get a sense of your learning.

I joined a KAL. Big mistake. The entire pattern wasn’t available until the end. Too complicated for my skill level. If I had more info, I’d have skipped it. Yarn was pricey too!

Nancy, I am new to knitting and making something called Sophisticated Knitted capelet I am confused at the decrease rounds What does this mean K6 (14, 3, 10), [k2tog, k2 (2, 3, 3)] 38 times, end K7 (14, 2, 10) - 118 (132, 146, 160) sts remain. I understand how to K2 tog but the brackets are confusing me. If you can help I would appreciate it one of the reasons I might quit !

Hi Jo, It looks like your project includes 4 sizes. At the beginning of your pattern, it includes sizes. For example, it may say Small (Medium, Large, XLarge) or give measurements. Notice the first size before the brackets is the Small. Then the next sizes are shown in order in the ( ). Find your size and note where it's located within the ( ). Every time you see the ( ) used in the pattern it means you'll need to pay attention to only your size. So in the example you provided, let's say you are making the size the first size within the ( ). The pattern would be K14 [k2tog, k2] 38 times end 14 - 132 sts remain. Does that make sense?
I highly recommend going through the pattern and either circling your size or highlighting your size to make it easier to follow along. Happy knitting! 😀

I have just thrown away sock wool after struggling on short row heels for 3 years. I have watched every video out there, nothing makes sense. I have just wasted a lot of money on pure sock wool.
