At 6'2 with below NBA average athleticism, I don't think he'll ever be capable of defending at a high level, but consistent elite shooting can make up for a lot of that. There's a video of him hitting 20 threes in a row when he met his new coach. This was just after getting off a 20 hour flight from Japan, without warming up, and wearing a sling bag over his shoulder lol.
