"Over the Hills and Far Away" is a traditional British song, dating back to at least the late 17th century. One version was published in Thomas D'Urfey's Wit and Mirth, or Pills to Purge Melancholy; a very different one appeared in George Farquhar's 1706 play The Recruiting Officer. A version also appears in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera of 1728.

This version of the song is about the War of Spanish Succsesion (1701-1714)
It mentions Queen Anne, Duke of Marlborough, fighting the French and Spaniards and the importance of taking Flanders
This is kind of a fix-up of several versions of the song, I note Tom from the nursery rhyme even gets a verse.
What does the Galway Beat refer to?
@@thomasnewsom7570 Probably to another British commander from the war, Henri de Massue, Earl of Galway
@@thomasnewsom7570 A drum beat to a specific tune, in this case, "Galway". The fife and drum were used in this period to set the marching formation and speed of march.
As an English peasant conscript, this is 🔥

King Charles commands and we'll obey,

Long live the king
Over the hills and over the main to Chechnya,Georgia and Ukraine President Putin commands we obey over the hills and far.
@@OscarOSullivanRussian troll detected.
@@ultonian63 Except I am mocking the Russians like this song mocks either Queen Anne or George the third
@@OscarOSullivan ah but I don’t think it mocks Queen Anne. I think it is genuinely affectionate to her.

Is there a WWI version?
Interesting that theres multiple versions but most of them were in different decades
Hell, most are from different centuries!
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not a native English speaker, what is a main like the one that they say "over the hills and o'er the main"
I'm not quite sure myself. Main can mean the large sails at the center of a ship
@@ozymandias3329 thanks you
"Main" in this type of eighteenth-century English simply means "sea" or "ocean".
@@damonhager7085 thank you
Not a dumb Question. Many English people do not know that it means the sea
What version is þis?
Edit: It's þe Gin Lane version.
Not the same land. map is not right, cool song
Should've included Ireland?
@Archivum Musicum shouldn't have included anything on Ireland. Song is from the war of the Spanish Succession, When Ireland was not a part of the UK proper
The net pay of a common soldier topped out at seven pounds, seven shillings, and seven pence a year. How poor must they have been for that pay to be attractive.
That's actually about average, with a common daytaler only making about five pounds a year. But the real payout were injuries. Lose a leg and you could get up to fifty pounds.
I hope you are adjusting for inflation? 1 lb of cheese was only 1 1/2 pence in those days. That pay was actually good compared to many other civilian jobs at the time.
Me and my soldiers sung this in Georgia. Imagine a bundle of Russians, some with back to front rifle slings and some with trousers that looked like they’ve been draped in shit singing a British song with absolutely horrid broken English. But, hey. It’s the experience that counts. And us Russians may be considered Brits if we rival their tea consumption
the American Revolution had an absolute fire soundtrack
This doesn't paint a good picture of 1700 and 1800 British army.
The 17th/18th British Army wasn't made up of the brightest and best. Much of the Army were petty(and oft times major) felons who "took the King's shilling" to escape justice. Others saw it as a way to escape poverty.
@thomasnewsom7570 but most countries like France had conscripts.
The Crown resorted to "press gangs" when necessary. Usually for he Navy.@@RonSill1986
