For anyone doing this in 2021 and beyond, it still works, but the size of the System Update folder in OSU1 has increased to 6.11GB. So the 12GB that the master script allots will not be enough.
You should use the AOMEI Partition Assistant to add at leat 1.3 GB (so there is some extra just in case) to the System Update partition. If you have no unallocated data to draw from, use the Disk Partition tool to shrink the User Content partition and them merge that unallocated data to System Update.
Hope this helps! All the best and Happy Gaming!
You've saved me thanks!

King. Thank you.
Thank you so much my man, i was panicking when i saw 'not enough space'.
@@akshayc2408 Ru from India I got the black screen of death any idea how to fix it
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial and the links to all the necessary files. You made this mom a super hero today!
So far the best put together video for this I have seen. I will be trying it out today and hope to keep my grandson happy
Did it work?
BEST VIDEO I HAVE CAME ACCROSS FOR HELP SO FAR
FYI: This still works in 2023. Follow both Modded and Akshays instructions. My hard drive was fried. Hadn’t turned on my xbox one-s in 5 years, and tonight I had success.
I rarely leave reviews but Kudos to the guy who put this together. Worked a treat. My son only uses the Xbox for Forza now (he is a PS5 user) - so he is happy and my wallet is too 😀
NOTE: Use a Western Digital HDD!! I followed this process with a 1TB Seagate on my Xbox One X. Got stuck at a black screen immediately after starting up. Even the USB stick method wouldn’t work. Took it all apart again, swapped to a WD drive, and it’s worked flawlessly since. Another commenter below also mentions his Seagate replacement not working with this method either. No idea why.
This was an amazing tutorial, that aside. Saved me over $200 in repair costs to fix my dead HDD. Thank you!!!
This still works in 2024. U saved my nephews Halo edition xbox one. Legend. Cudos to u and a sub
Also, xboxonehdd-master-9 is now available and can be downloaded in a version that has its own user interface. You just have to click the boxes and it's takes you through the process, rather than using command prompt. So it's now even easier.
Thank you for this video! It is much better quality than others I've seen. I personally had an issue with the hard drive, though it wasn't making any strange noises. It wasn't updating properly and I'm guessing that some of the files became corrupted, however, using this video I was able to format it and reinstall it.
I saw many tutorials about replacing or upgrading the xbox one's hard drive and this one was the easiest to understand.
Thank you for this video, it clarified some steps that I needed to take. With the caveat that in my case, the system update partition was too small at 12GB, the OSU1 files in A and B came out to occupy a little more space than 12GB, I had a 2TB drive, I had 100GB of unallocated space (why?), I merged that with the System Space partition, and then I had to do the update through the USB anyway, but in the end, my Xbox One is now working!
Me too I have 500GB HDD and I had 700MB only unallocated so I merged them with the system update.
Do I need more space for the system update?
mine too
Same here
Uggggh, thank you!!! All other videos were very convoluted. Sadly this didn’t resolve the problem for me but thank you for at least getting me through that part of troubleshooting because it was a headache.
This saved me today! Step by step. Absolutely brilliant. And thanks to the pinned comment - increased by System Update drive to be a little bigger too. Worked without any error codes. 👏👏👏
Still working as of 2024-10-31. Used this video to fix my Xbox One S with a dead hard drive that wasn't even going into recovery mode, but I could hear the hard drive trying to spin up. When I tested the Xbox with another hard drive, it would go into recovery mode. So I installed another 1TB hard drive into the Xbox after preparing it like it was shown in the video. I had to increase the System Update folder size according to the pinned comment. Opened up the Xbox, installed the hard drive, booted into recovery mode, installed the update from USB, and it was fixed. It's crazy how a dead hard drive could prevent the Xbox from booting into recovery mode. The average person would probably think their Xbox was dead and waste money on repairs instead of buying a new hard drive.
Thanks for this video! I popped E102 and E106 errors after following your process, but eventually cleared it up after running the USB update again. Working perfectly now.
im having that problem, what can i do to fix it
i am currently redownloading the system update on my flash drive, lmk what i can do to fix it
Thanks to your video I was able to swap out the hard drive in my ONE for something faster and bigger.
thanks man, I just fixed mine, good tip telling us about the usb recovery, because I had to do that, but it now works great, thank you so much man!
This must be the best video for this floating on youtube. Others are very cumbersome. Thx
I had the exact same problem with the click. My HD was shot. Got a new SSD and DL'd everything listed. Followed the directions exactly as shown and it worked. Thank you!!!
Tried and true. My OG Xbox One is back up and running thanks to you, with a new 500GB SSD. Even runs smoother and quieter.
Thanks for the video. Saved my brother a lot of money. Took an old 1TB drive and did this for him and it worked. Thanks so much!
Gets a double thumbs up from me, being a knowlessman I saw my recently bought for £4 Xone powered on fine... black screen so assumed it was something terminal so set about reinstalling a new mobo only to test the 500gb HDD and man it was toast, pure and simple. Never seen a HDD report so full of failure and pre-failure listings, so got a 750gb one en route and hopefully this will be fixed up and a goer this time tomorrow. So now I have what should be a working mobo and dvd board so going to keep an eye out for a busted one and have two to play with :D
Bro!!! I was about to learn how to de-solder mosfets off a motherboard before i saw this video. Thanks alot man! Subbed!
Thanks man, very detailed yet very simple video.
Best wishes from India.
An Epic legend, another console has been fixed thanks to this video
Mine worked first time (didnt need the USB) - awesome video, many many thanks for posting.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this Tutorial, it really helped me. With the lock down and the shit show that is 2020 both me and my son have used the xbox more than ever, so it breaking has been a nightmare. As he can't really hang out with his mates in these covid times, they all hang out in xbox party's instead. The one revision I'd suggest for the process is adding the boot animation to the memory stick, as if you have to use the stick you won't get the xbox boot animation the way you explained it.
how can you add the boot animation?
I gave it a shot at my xo doing the offline update before replacing HDD and it worked! thanks for the detailed video.
Excellent guide!!!!!!! Brought my dead Xbox one x back to life.
Is the same process for the one X ?

Thank you for providing these links. After installing the OS on the new disk, I had to go through 4 more E-codes, but eventually we got there thanks to your tips.
Without your tutorial I didn't fix my OG Xbox one. Thank You Man und greetings from Germany 🙂
man your such a legend u fixed my xbox and its been broke for ages now im so happy
Thank you so much... best video available fix xbox one with detailed instructions. My xbox was shutting down after few minutes. XBox hard disc had click of death. I replaced the 500GB WD Blue hard disk with 1TB Seagate hybrid drive. After booting i received Error 106 and it was fixed by booting via USB stick as per your instructions and it worked like a charm.
Thanks again..
OMG!! This tutorial saved my console.. I was thinking to throw my xbox to the trash until I saw your video.
@@reza7531 No, at least mine is working fine since I’ve replaced the hd..
Hi, kudos from me too! The hard drive in my Xbox One was broken (Error102) Thanks to you, it's new again! FANTASTIC ! ! !
Thank you for the video and best regards
from Germany ;)
Just an FYI the new OSU1 file is too large to put in both in A and B folders. The X folder is only 12GB, I had to change the size of the X folder from 12GB to 20GB, I allocated the space from the temp content folder. Just wanted to mention it in case anyone else has the same issue.
Just a friendly heads up.... the update files are bigger now so you will need to allocate more space to that volume to add all of the files to both A and B...
best video on this subject, real easy to follow
This fixed my xbox, thank you for the help, really saved my wallet!
My Xbox that I've had since around launch just stopped working about a year ago. I was too lazy too look into it after doing ALL troubleshooting. Microsoft said it would cost 150 to get it fixed. It would turn on and then shut off after about 15-20 seconds. I gave up.
I decided to look into again yesterday, turns out it was the HDD, (I opened the hdd, head was stuck, moved it back to where it was supposed to be, baby came on as normal, but the head got stuck again)
I just ordered a 2TB, gonna try this on Monday when it gets here, thank you for this.
i know this is late but please update me i cant seem to get mine to stay on even after this video
@@mrnobody3114 It's possible that you may have a bad HDD, if you have another HDD lying around somewhere, try that and see if it works, Mine ended up working after I got the new one, still have it too lol good luck
Also, one of the partitions needs to be resized a bit, I don't remember which one though
Thankyou managed to change my hard drive in my xbox one using your video
You are the best.
Thankyou so much. You saved me so much trouble. Easily the best video out there.
Thank you for making this video! I followed the directions and it worked! so my Xbox is back up and running! However, some of the links in the description above no longer work.
Awesome video, fixed the problem right away, keep up the good content!
Just did this on mine and so far its working fine, cheers
Nicely Done! Fixed a bricked Xbox One that a friend gave to me :)

this was very helpfull the only video i could understand thank you
My Xbox is working again, thank you so much you saved me 100$+
So... I guess the only other thing I can try and do is wait for another OSU1.

And all of my online searching for answers has led me to believe this is because I'm enrolled in the preview program making it impossible to boot my system
This video was and is full of insightful information though, more understandable than most vids out there for sure. 👍
Thank you SO MUCH 👍 for such a detail instructions. I'm wondering that there is only WD 2.5" HD is compatible for XBox One, model 1540? Or I can replace with any 2.5" HD? Can I use 2.5" SSD drive instead of regular mechanical? Or there's no benefits from it? Thanks again.
Like always, very good video's. You speak so clear, that I think I could also understand you at 2x speed ;-)
Just fixed my daughters Xbox. You made it real easy. The power button doesn’t work anymore but at least she can play again lol
I had issue with power button ages ago. 1) make sure ribbon cable is under the slideing plastic clip not over it. 2) gently pry between the button and the case and get some kitchen roll in there with a pry tool etc. If any residue is between the case and the internal button it doesnt work. Got xbox from a heavy vaper and that issue was eliquid reidue between button and case. The button is fixed right up against the case so be careful but worked for me
Thank you for this awesome vídeo. I was able to fix my son's xbox one by replacing the hdd with a ssd . it worked perfectly 👌. I did had to use the USB drive update offline method. but after that is perfect Thank you again.
It worked for me, couldnt find the bootamin file tho, Looks like that website expired, But least im playing again.. Thank you and side note: You dont have to put in file A and B just file A works, I tried be but not enough space on the 1T hardrive.. Thank u bro
You saved my xbox. My xbox would turn on and than turn off. No signal no nothing. I got a new hard drive and now I have a working xbox.
Thanks brother, I appreciate your good works here!
you get a sub, IFixit tried to charge me 200+ for a fix, but you had me spend no more than $15 for a cheap hard drive to see if i can fix it. So thank you so much, if i could pay you i would.
Thanks! this allowed me to recover a dead XboxOne - it turns out the partition table got corrupted and it lost all the partition information. Rebuild the drive an everything works again :D
Thank you very much for the video! It has been a huge help. I have saved my xbox 1s. A few notes on problems I had. After formatting the new hdd and installing it failed to load. I used a usb memory stick to boot from. The first try failed and erased the memory stick. If this process fails, repeat it. That is reformat the drive, install software again and check to see if usb got erased. Got it all working on the second try. Also, test it out before putting everything back together. Saves a headache if you need to rinse and repeat.
great tutorial, One update id add is that the osu is now over 6gb so you cant copy and paste it to an A and B folder. I just skipped that part and had the OSU1 file update from a USB stick and it worked just fine.
Did you skip making A and B completely? I'm having the same problem.
???
Just got a used xbox one fat in 2023, only have 380gb storage, upgrade it to 1TB using this method, work like a charm.
First use the cmd format program, using aomei(free version) partition set the size of system update folder to 14gb (because osu1 need 6.5gb x 2 (folder A & B)) copy $sysumpdate, plug in the hdd to xbox.
This vid is fantastic. thank you for your clear (very clear!) explanations. sadly i don't have access to a PC, just a Mac.. i am assuming i can't run the partition and setup scripts using my Mac?
Mine doesn't work but every time i try partitioning it, it comes up as basic data partition rather than primary partition.
I seem to be the only one having this issue and i can't figure out why.
Great tutorial thanks! But I’m having some trouble reconnecting the front panel and getting the power button to work properly- any advice welcome!
Jon Howard same
There's a small little ribbon cable that connects the touch sensitive buttons to the rest of the console. If you just yanked the case off during disassembly you probably tore it, if it's not torn just reconnect the pins and it should work, I've seen people talk about it in other hdd replacement videos where they show them unplugging and plugging it back in.
That’s so easy. I just did the same thing. Went from 1TB HDD to 2 TB SSD. Takes less than an hour.
What brand SSD did you use?

I’m having the same issue on an Xbox one X
Hi there, great video, got one remark though. When i did the hd replacement on my xbox i tried to use a Seagate hd. This did not work, so back to the store an got me a wd hd. This worked like a charm. It said so in the .txt file i read afther i hit this hd problem which accompanied the script. So all is good now and thx again for your very clear explanation, cheers!
I know this is an old video but I was wondering if there was anywhere else to get the boot animation from? When ai try to get it it says I need permission
Thanks i was able to fix my nephew's OG XBOX ONE.
Hi. I followed your video, and things seemed good until I tried to power on console.
The TV show a signal showing 2160p on then no signal message, and console just sits there with the power button illuminated, but no boot.
Just curious what troubleshooting steps you would recommend taking next?
Thank you btw. Great video.
hey well i faced a problem where the OSU1 is larger than the software update disk size cuz its now about 13 gb(when u copy on both A file and B file) and the partition is about 11.5 so i did merge the unallocated space to the system software update so its now 100gbs and it worked
i used the partition assistant u mentioned to merge them
in case it didnt work with some people this is a solution for them if the system file cant fit
and i faced an error on booting it says system error and put in restart or trouble shoot
and the method Modded Warfare did mention about the USB back up for the system worked for me
thank you man u saved me twice
Guys after doing everything perfectly twice and getting BLACK display every single time and unable to go into troubleshooting mode by holding Sync and Eject (no second beep) Double check your HDMI !! I kept plugging into the wrong one it should be the HDMI next to the power , big oversight on my part Now it's in the process of recovering with a new SSD! Thank you MOdded Warfare!
Great video. Very helpful. When upgrading from the original HDD (still in working condition) to an SSD, would it be better to copy over the Xbox OS from the original drive or get the Xbox OS via the OSU1 update? I'm just wondering whether the fresh download of OSU1 would lead to a cleaner OS install and perhaps faster boot times.
Thank u so much bro. I had bought a 2tb external hdd so my kids could have more space and it stopped allowing games to copy onto it so i followed ur steps to the letter and it worked. So now our xbox one now has 2tb of space to work with. Ur tutorial was a game saver. Imsaving this video. Thanx again from my kids.
I've tried every single available guide, including this one, and i always end up with an E106 error (the exact one that you show at the end of the video). Trying to do an offline update always fails with an E101 error. I have tried this on 3 different HDDs ranging from 500GB to 1TB and nothing seems to make any difference.

Just a friendly heads up.... the update files are bigger now so you will need to allocate more space to that volume to add all of the files to both A and B
Thanks so much, you just saved me a lot of money
My system update x: drive says there isn't enough space to copy everything to a and b? It's a 500gb hdd, do I need to change partition size?
Yeah I had same problem, my advice is forget the A&B copy method. Once your HDD is partitioned using the tool just install it in the console (NOTE: don't completely reassemble the console as you will need to remove HDD again) ...The new HDD is of course blank so it will boot up with error E106 that's great because then you install from the flash drive as per the video do all the updates and languages. Once its installed and all working switch off and remove the HDD again and connect to your PC. Copy the Boot animation .Dat file into folder A & B and then safely remove the HDD from your PC and reinstall it in the console... you should now be good to reassemble the console.
Great video! Worked first time, however it did fail again later and game installations stopped. My HDD probably has some internal surface damage or bad sectors. Took some time to clear again so windows could read it. I'm attempting again, however this time I'm running chkdsk /f /r to overwrite and repair any bad sectors first before running scripts and copying files onto the hdd. hopefully, it'll bind a bit better this time.
So you can restore a dead hard drive?
hello man!!! Congrats for another video!!!please a question where can i find this hdd cable sata to usb to connect the hdd with laptop?
on electronic shops or buy on internet
Great tutorial m8t you got a sub from me I wanted to upgrade my 500gb to 1tb makes a big difference to storage I will use my 500 GB drive for external now.thanks a lot m8t found your step by step guide very easy and user friendly.
Just an update, hand making the HDD structure is working fine, powered up after its clean and rebuild with new HDD, said to restart or troubleshoot, in went the thumb drive and next thing its updating after selecting offline update. Expected it to halt at various points but went through, restarted twice and powered into main page. Currently downloading Forza H5 right now, We Happy Few and Resi Evil 2 remake, running Netflix full power and UA-cam all good :D
There is no bat.file, what should I do ?
I got an E102 error after following this but restarting the offline update process twice finally convinced my console to start working. I heard that if you still get errors afterwards that you might need a new hard drive cable.
little tipp, you can use the xbox one x boot logo on the original xbox one or s i did it on mine and it worked fine
Big thanks... my buddy has his hard drive crap out on him and this video helped me fix it so he doesn't have to buy a new one.
Thank you for the tutorial. Everything is done good for me. ✌️👍
Saved my Xbox. Thank you!
When I go to troubleshoot and go to usb update it will get to 1% and then make the xbox turn off noise and go to error screen
me too get 106 error, None of the resets work or the new drive in the video above on my 2 TB. I did it on an 1tb normal drive which worked but not on an ssd
@@SummermoonUK if you have the original Xbox one you can download the OSU1 zip format a thumbdrive to exfat and extract the OSU1 zip on to it then select the usb on the troubleshoot screen. That worked for me with a 1TB SSD.
Hello, thanks for the video. My xbox was stuck in a factory reset loop. E200, then E201 error. Factory rest didn't work, offline usb didn't work (it gets stuck at 72% then 'something went wrong'.
I decided to reformat the harddrive and followed your helpful guide. But when putting it all back together it starts to try and finish the previous update??.. how is this possible if I've just reformatted the harddrive? Now I'm back to where I was 🤔.. Any ideas welcome.
It is possible that the formating didnt go well. Try again. Also do not connect to Network after reasembling. Maybe that will help.
cd drive ?
Much appreciated, I'll be sure to keep this handy when I have the cash to afford a better drive.
@Lil Rise 666 Yup, but I'm looking to upgrade the drive to a TB of SSD.
march12314 for an Xbox one? That costs as much as the console
@TeCh ExPlOiTs Where are you getting your SSD's from? I can easily grab a terabyte of SSD from Samsung for about $150. Not only that, but I have a spare 256GB lying around that ran for like 30 or 40.
march12314 $150 is as much as the console is worth
TeCh ExPlOiTs Brand new? No. Used? Yes.
Hi This works well on a standard 1TB drive. All works fine. So I decided to get a 2TB SSD and do the same process and swap out the 1TB drive. Well it fails every time! it gets to "preparing console..." and then errors at 5% with either the 101 or 106 error code.
Next I did a direct clone of the Normal 1TB hard drive to the 2TB ssd and same result!
Next I tried a different make of SSD same failure. Tried different cables different caddies. All to no avail! Ive tried Kingtson Sandisk Crucial and WD ssd's
Ive even tried cloning the SSD back to the normal harddrive which then works fine!
Im using OCU1 from Microsofts support page for the Xbox one and setting up all the partitions as per instructions.
Tried using eh tUSB method too for off line. Works for a normal harddrive but not any of the SSDs
So what am i doing wrong?
I'm sorta in that same boat with the exception of cloning because my previous two terabyte hard drive crashed I ended up upgrading to a one terabyte Samsung Evo 860 I partitioned everything correctly put the files in the respective areas and even made a offline installer bootable hard drive and I get E106 error on boot and E101 after trying to install offline update,
I was doing some internet searching when this happened and I saw a Reddit post saying The error could possibly be coming from the nand chip on the motherboard and that the error is basically saying that you already have a later firmware/osu1 installed thus making it impossible to upgrade and use your SSD, unless a newer osu released, some of the other posts on Reddit were also saying this is due to being in the preview program AKA Xbox insider, but yeah in other words I think it would have to take a newer offline system update for your SSD to kick in and start working 🤷🏼♂️ I think when the Xbox series systems start dropping that's when we get a new update so keep a lookout on the Microsoft troubleshoot page, One of my friends told me when he was updating his Xbox via online the update was 4.4 or .6-gb so the OSU might change its size on the website when it becomes public, Right now it's it's 5.88 gigs when I download it it's been the same for a minute so I say just wait, another thing you can do is check the dates on the files currently the dates for this OSU are 10/9/20.
I hope I helped you out a little bit 😊👍
just a heads up in 2022 the google drive link now tells you you need to ask for permission. great video as always.
