    I'm not as religious as I used to be, but when I saw my first playthrough of this game god damn did the depictions of the circles of Hell scare me. All of them were downright terrifying visually and the creatures that inhabited them just made it even worse. Probably the one that frightened me the most was Gluttony. Not because of the three headed intestine Cerberus, but the obese monsters that would eat sinners.

    I think this game actually feels a lot more unique now than it did when it was released strictly because there have been so few hack-and-slash games released during this generation. It kind of reminds me of old movie genres like Film Noirs and Spaghetti Westerns where they released a ton of them during their era, but then they largely stopped making them, giving them a distinctive quality in retrospect.
    I hate to sound like one of those fuddy duddy "things were better back in my day" types, but the 2007-2013 era of video games was the best time for cutting-edge, innovative stories. Look at the stuff EA was publishing back then. Dante's Inferno, Dead Space, Alice: Madness Returns, Mass Effect, and Shadows of the Damned (which was largely changed from its original concept, but still pretty fun). Then look at the unoriginal garbage they've been publishing since then. Pretty depressing to think about.

      I generally agree in terms of AAA games, but I feel that a lot of the more experimental writing can still be found in smaller titles, or even hidden in the corners of bigger bloated games.

    • @stolensentience
      @stolensentience 2 роки тому +7

      It was also the era that moved away from gameplay-centric titles, focusing instead on-like you said-the story, as well as cutscenes and empty open worlds. So even at this time I sounded like you, saying that games used to be much more engaging. But I’d agree that games (and media in general) have been even worse in the last decade, especially in terms of high concepts or anything controversial. Part of it is likely just us not being impressionable teens and preteens anymore, but it’s easy to notice the gaming trend toward streamlined, safe, repetitive formulae that focus on vapid open worlds, checklists, politically correct characters, and other uninspired fodder gameplay elements.

    • @LongSinceDead1
      @LongSinceDead1 2 роки тому +3

      I mean, I agree with what you’re saying to an extent, but let’s not pretend that that was like the greatest era of gaming or anything. 2007-2012 saw a lot of games homogenizing, genres die out, and a greater push to capitalize on popular western trends like Call of Duty and Gears of War. It also marked a significant decrease in challenging gameplay experiences and a huge increase of cinematic blockbuster type games (not that these are inherently bad, but the industry was saturated at that point)
      Don’t get me wrong, countless amazing titles released during the 7th Gen, but honestly it might have been one of the worst eras for gaming culturally. It was a period where even most of the great Japanese companies were moving to dumbed down, unoriginal blockbusters to appeal to the growing western mass market and chase that CoD and GoW money. If anything, I think these past few generations have been much better for gaming.
      TL:DR that era of gaming (the 7th Gen) was saturated by a slew of unoriginal schlock and while it had plenty of unique and fantastic titles, it was in no way significantly better than the industry today and may have actually been worse (in my opinion). I think you’re letting nostalgia cloud you, and I recommend searching for the countless amazing games that have released in the last few years.

    What a great setting for a game, though the poet Dante is not exactly a good fit for a hack and slash though of course EA executives just ask "what's popular now?". This Dante is closer to Kratos and basically the opposite of the sorrowful thoughtful protagonist of the Divine Comedy. I still can't believe they tried that, just as when I first saw the newspaper article announcing the game (first time seeing a video game in Italian news). I had forgotten about that until youtube recommended to me Mr.Hammers video, glad to have found you guys and glad to see a more in-depth look at this high-budget weirdness!

    It really is a great game. I remember fighting Dante’s father I died so many times but refused to give up. If it wasn’t for a health increase slot that I just so happened to have enough money saved up to get during the fight and using the the rage meter to go for broke in the final leg of the fight don’t think I would have beat him. And the final boss I specifically saved a health and a mana increase slot for the final fight used both of them up on the first stage thinking might as well use them now only to find out it was a multi stage boss. @@MayorHairBearDante actually wanted to show how christianity was censoring all knowledge of past cultures as sinful and damned.
      That's why when you read the Divine Comedy you can actually tell a lot of small details:
      1. The Inferno is built as huge amphitheater, emulating the roman coliseum.
      2. You can see a lot, and I mean, A LOT of mythological characters from other cultures doing their part in Hell. Like Charon, Phlegyas and Minos. Also, real world characters known to Dante like Cleopatra, Marcus Antonius, Farinata and his own father, burning in the ethernal flames for their sins.
      Dante was sending a message to uncover religious censorship and the Church thinked it was all real shit instead, LoL.

    This was one of my favorite action games from that era. I really loved the atmosphere of the game and I found the combat really enjoyable. Another action game from that era I would recommend is Heavenly Sword which is my personal favorite Ninja Theory game. Unfortunately similarly to Dante's Inferno it got hit with the "GOW clone" label at the time, but I really enjoyed the combat, main character, and Chinese inspired setting.

    Dante's Inferno was so underrated. I discovered be stunning art of Wayne Barlowe thanks to it. You are 100% right that it was a great move to include him in the creative process. I have the great privilege to be able to speak to him easily (he follows my work on IG and is very friendly to reply), so one of the first things I told him was how big an influence this game has on my art career. He also mentioned being saddened by the fact the game didn't do better as he enjoyed making art for it.

    My points on Dante is that people hated it on it because it was too soon from GoW releases (market saturation) I also thought that they should have stuck more to the source material and focus less on the gameplay - I know, which is crazy for game development; but I feel it actually hurt the game since it felt like it lacked personality.
    I would also have preferred longer durations for the Circles some of them were ridiculously short. Enemy variety does grind considering all the myriad of demons you could be fighting not just the ones endemic to their particular circle.
    Weapon variety is not an issue, some adventure is about arsenal other times the weapons are more personal or iconic. A parallel is the Belmont whip/chain and their side arm of choice in the Castlevania series. The magic are actually the weapons you are looking for, it was probably best for them to label them as abilities rather than spells; if you know what I mean.
    Moreover, I feel a lot of your points you mentioned are less relevant in higher difficulties, for example the absolutions are actually the real upgrade progression due to the exp bonus if you do perfect or semi perfect absolutions. Purchasing combos through the regular combat is rather quite difficult. Yes, I agree a more thematical reward from saving damned souls would be cool. As for, the combat absolutions, I also agree they do break combat pacing GoW has three grab kill for critter tier mobs- the exp bonus, the kill/high damage, or the combat pacing kill. In GoW the grab where Kratos throws critter tiers towards the other mobs or uses them as battering rams are good for the pacing issue. Although, for high difficulty to those short Quick Times provided very need i-frames to escape lethal damage or when low on health.
    Lastly, due to the nature of the final fight with Lucifer; cross builds are better over scythe builds; and most players feel like you, about the magic choices. However, maxing out Sins of The Father and Martyrdom turns the Lucifer fight into a triviality or they are must haves at top difficulty. (Yes, Lucifer phase 1 and 3 are utter bs at highest difficulty) The game rewards creative use of what seems are very lame or low utility abilities over the big flashy moves.

    I like the "It's a lazy rip-off" argument. Especially when it's a "rip-off" of an inherently good idea.
    They'll praise a game for the hard work and ingenuity, then when someone else puts in that same hard work to emulate the ingenuity, they're called lazy. Amazing.

    A little off topic
    The movie “As above so below”
    Has a real cool hell reference!
    When they found the actual entrance to hell it was just a tight little tunnel so they had to get on their knees and then on their bellies to squeeze through!
    Once they got in the tunnel they looked at each other and made some quote from Dante’s Inferno
    You will enter hell like a serpent on your belly!!
    Or something like that I completely mangled it hopefully you know what I mean!

    I had no idea that this game existed. I was just looking around the bargain bin at *Gamestop* several years ago and picked this up. I've seen it many times before but, I wasn't interested in it at the time. I purchased it, got home, unwrapped it, popped it in and never regretted buying it. If you immerse yourself in the game become Dante makes it really fun to play. The unbaptised babies in HELL were creepy and disturbing to see with their annoying crying and bladed extremities. The destruction of the giant chains of Judecca was a nice touch I didn't expect it would free Lucifer. So that explains why I keep hearing laughter everytime I broke a chain. Dante's Infernal is a very underappreciated game would like to see it make an appearance on next-gen consoles and a remake of *The Legacy of Kain* series on next-gen consoles it's been a long time coming. Not just one or two titles the whole series from the beginnings of Kain's bloody backstory to the betrayal and rebirth of Raziel. Then begin a new storyline with a new character or known characters that's apart of the mythos maybe both then bring it all together full circle. I wish the scythe had a *Scorpion* from *Mortal Kombat* attack mechanic "GET OVER HERE!!!*

    Oh my god this title speaks SO much volume because it’s true. Because Dante’s Inferno is an under appreciated Gem just like Bioshock 2 and just like Splatterhouse.
    Sure it’s as similar to some of the hack and slash greats. To me at the time this game stood out on its own because of the aesthetic feel of the game and setting…I never looked at it as a clone or copy.
    I just loved it from beginning to End…Dante himself has one of the coolest Scythe designs I’ve ever seen in Media that I almost felt you could put it into an anime.

For the circle Greed the gameplay should focus on our temptation of Greed etc
